  • WATCHMOJO – the Life and Career of David Bowie (1947-2016)
WATCHMOJO – The life and career of David Bowie (1947-2016) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lan_wotkon0 [Fashion] Welcome to watchmojo.com and today we're taking a look at the life and career of David Bowie. [Queen Bitch] David Robert Jones was born on January 8 1947 in Brixton London England. Though he showed musical interest at a young age it was only in the early 60s that he really pursued the art. He started by joining several blues bands but branched off on his own when they had little success. Renaming himself David Bowie he released his self-titled debut in 1967. [Who's that hiding in the apple tree clinging to a branch] Its lack of success led Bowie to participate in a promotional film called Love you till Tuesday which showcased several of his songs. A particular interest was Space Oddity : that track became a hit after it was released at the same time as the first moon landing. [Ground control to Major Tom] His sophomore effort of the same name however was another commercial disappointment. [The man who sold the world] To promote his third album The man who sold the world, Bowie was put in a dress to capitalize on his androgynous look. [Life on mars] [Ziggy Stardust] In 1971 a pop influenced record called Hunky-Dory came out and was followed by the creation of his flamboyant Ziggy Stardust persona and stage show with backing band The Spiders from Mars. Then came his breakthrough record The rise and fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars which climbed the charts thanks to his performance of the single Star Man on Top of the Pops.

GIRL WITH A CAMERA A Novel of Margaret Bourke-White, Photographer Commented [CY1]: Add Photographer? By Carolyn Meyer Carolyn Meyer 100 Gold Avenue SW #602 Albuquerque, NM 87102 505-362-6201 [email protected] 2 GIRL WITH A CAMERA Sometime after midnight, a thump—loud and jarring. A torpedo slams into the side of our ship, flinging me out of my bunk. The ship is transporting thousands of troops and hundreds of nurses. It is December 1942, and our country is at war. I am Margaret Bourke-White, the only woman photographer covering this war. The U.S. Army Air Forces has handed me a plum assignment: photographing an Allied attack on the Germans. I wanted to fly in one of our B-17 bombers, but the top brass ordered me to travel instead in the flagship of a huge convoy, headed from England through the Straits of Gibraltar towards the coast of North Africa. It would be safer than flying, the officers argued. As it turns out, they were dead wrong. Beneath the surface of the Mediterranean, German submarines glide, silent and lethal, stalking their prey. One of their torpedoes has found its mark. I grab my camera bag and one camera, leaving everything else behind, and race to the bridge. I hear the order blare: Abandon ship! Abandon ship! There is not enough light and not enough time to take photographs. I head for Lifeboat No. 12 and board with the others assigned to it, mostly nurses. We’ve drilled for it over and over, but this is not a drill.

  • Devilish Echoes: Goethe's Faust and Its Modern American Interpretations
Devilish Echoes: Goethe’s Faust and Its Modern American Interpretations By Caleb Miller Of all the devilish motifs that are propagated in America, none may be as sinister as the devil’s familiar. My first encounter with this idea was from the Grateful Dead, and their 1970 studio version of “Friend of the Devil”: Ran into the devil, babe, he loaned me 20 bills… I ran down to the levee, but the devil caught me there, Took my 20 dollar bill and he vanished in the air. (The Grateful Dead) The condemned folk hero is nothing new to art, or even popular culture. In 1808, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe produced one of the most well-known works of German stage: Faust: The Tragedy Part One (Ramm). Considered an integral part of the German “Classics”, Faust by definition carries a mythological background, one that is rooted in alchemy and the truth. It’s author, Goethe, also came to fruition as an artist during the “Sturm und Drang1” period of German art and philosophy, which turned the inquisitiveness of the Enlightenment on its head and attacked everything man had created to remove himself from the natural essence of being (Pausch 39). In order to unify these different motifs and storylines in Faust, Goethe added another piece to the myth: Gretchen, the pure and devout object of Faust’s infernal desires (Ramm). The story, as told by Goethe, begins in heaven, where God and Mephistopholes strike a deal that allows Mephistopholes to tempt Faust with his wanton desires (von Goethe 15). Dr. 1 “Storm and Stress” Faust is a cynical and dying genius who has devoted his life prior to the story to science and philosophy.

SOME KIND OF WAY OUT by BARBARA GORMAN A thesis submitted to the Graduate School-Camden Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Fine Arts Graduate Program in Creative Writing written under the direction of Prof. Lauren Grodstein and approved by ______________________________ Prof. Lauren Grodstein Camden, New Jersey October 2013 i THESIS ABSTRACT SOME KIND OF WAY OUT By BARBARA GORMAN Thesis Director: Prof. Lauren Grodstein Sixteen-year-old classic rock and blues guitar aficionado Drew Gilmore and his fourteen- year-old sister Cori have been helping their divorced mother Michelle cope with her advanced multiple sclerosis for the past two years to the best of their ability, but the severe sensory pain and uncontrollable muscle spasms have left Michelle, a former grocery store cashier, confined to a wheelchair most days and unable to sleep most nights. A concerned social worker and a few school staff members have begun to question whether Drew and Cori’s needs are being met at home. Drew is resistant and at times hostile toward any suggestions that Michelle may be unable to take care of them, insisting that he and Cori have plenty of help from family and friends in their working class neighborhood of Gloucester City, New Jersey, and that their father Frank, a prison guard who lives in Trenton, New Jersey, with his new wife and toddler son, does the grocery shopping and takes care of the bills. But Drew knows that things at home are far from okay, forcing things at school to a breaking point.
