GEORGE Central Marine Fisheries Research Station, Mandapam Camp INTRODUCTION A preliminary enquiry on the hydrological and planktological conditions in the river mouth region was conducted during the period 1950-52 and the results pub­ lished in an abstract form (George, 1953a). This study was later extended to cover the 25 km seaward region of the estuary in 1954. As is well known, the Malabar coast is highly productive from the fisheries point of view and it was also observed that the sea waters of the inshore region off Calicut are rich in plank­ ton and nutrient salts (George, 19536). Results of the present investigation would therefore serve to assess the influence of land drainage in the enrichment and re­ plenishment of the coastal waters and allied factors. The west coast of India which is subjected to a heavy rainfall amounting to more than 300 cm per annum, is characterised by numerous short and swift rivers which carry the,enormous amounts of the waters from the Western Ghats into the sea. TOPOGRAPHY OF THE ESTUARY The Korapuzha is a short and shallow river, 52 km long and consists of the Elathur River which joins the Korapuzha backwater system close to the mouth of the estuary about a kilometer away from the sea and another stream running from the foot of the high mountain range surrounding the Kodiyanadumalai (700 Metres) which also empties into the back-waters near Kaniangode about 16 km away from the river mouth.

Indian coastal region is one of the most populated coastal belts of the world. Kerala coastal region of South West Peninsular India hosts 2931 person per sq. km. Stability of coastal zone helps to prevent the intensity of coastal hazards like extreme waves, coastal flooding and coastal erosion, which is quite noticeable in the northern part of Kerala state, when compared to the southern coastal region. The paleo-shoreline of Kozhikode coast in northern Kerala is identified as 2.5 to 5 km landward from the modern shoreline in the Beypur – Kallayi sector, 1 to 2 km in the Kallayi – Korapuzha Sector and 1 to 2.5 km in the Korapuzha – Quilandi Sector. This proves that the area is an accreting one over the recent geological history. The sediment discharge of Chaliyar, Korapuzha, Kadalundi and Kallayi rivers along with micro morphology leads to the evolution and development of this coastal plain for last few centuries.

The BMCs of Kerala has also been declared as Environmental watch groups by the Government of Kerala vide GO No 04/13/Envt dated 13.05.2013. In Kerala after the devastating natural disasters of August 2018 Post Disaster Needs Assessment ( PDNA) has been conducted officially by international organizations. The present report of Rapid Impact Assessment of flood/ landslides on Biodiversity focus on community perspectives of the affect on Biodiversity and Ecosystems. It is for the first time in India that such an assessment of impact of natural disasters on Biodiversity was conducted at LSG level and it is a collaborative effort of BMC and Kerala State Biodiversity Board (KSBB). More importantly each of the 187 BMCs who were involved had also outlined the major causes for such an impact as perceived by them and suggested strategies for biodiversity conservation at local level. Being a study conducted by local community all efforts has been made to incorporate practical approaches for prioritizing areas for biodiversity conservation which can be implemented at local level.

INTRODUCTION HISTORY OF THE DISTRICT Kozhikode as a district came into existence on 1st January 1957. After the formation of Kerala state in 1956, when Malabar district was divided into three districts, the Central district with headquarters at Calicut (Kozhikode) was named as Kozhikode. The district, which initially had 5 taluks, had undergone several changes and the present district with 4 taluks was formed in 2013. The early history of the district is lost in obscurity. Neither inscription nor works of classical geographers and poets help us in reconstructing in full its early history. However, it is certain that during the Sangam Age the district formed part of the empire of the Cheras. During the Sangam age i.e. in the first two centuries of A.D the district was known as Poozhinad, which was later, annexed to Chera empire. The history of Kozhikode district for the next few centuries i.e. upto 8th century A.D is obscure. Kozhikode and its surroundings were part of Polanad ruled by Kolathiris. The ancestors of present Zamorin family defeated Kolathiri’s forces and established their headquarters at Kozhikode. Because of the persistent efforts and administrative abilities of the rulers who were later known as Zamorin, Kozhikode became an important commercial and trading centre during post Sangam age. During the pre Portuguese period the Zamorin achieved the suzerainty over a large track of land and many neighbouring Rajas accepted him as their protector.

Eighteen species of fishes belonging to 8 orders and 13 families were recorded. The order with diverse species composition is Siluriformes (4 species, and 3 families), followed by Cypriniformes (3 species and 1 family) and Perciformes (3 species and 3 families). The most diverse family is Cyprinidae with 3 species, followed by Bagridae (2 species), Cichlidae (2 species) and Clupeidae (2 species). Out of the 18 riverine fishes collected from the study area, Horabagrus brachysoma and Hyporhamphus xanthopterus are under vulnerable category. Key words: Freshwater fish, Diversity, Biodiversity richness, Korapuzha River. INTRODUCTION Water is the most significant building block of nature without which life can't exist. As the aquatic ecosystem is highly significant, it plays a vital role in ecosystems over the planet (Smith, 1980). GEORGE Central Marine Fisherifs Research Station, Mandapam Camp INTRODUCTION A preliminary enquiry on the hydrological and planktological conditions in the river mouth region was conducted during the period 1950-52 and the results pub­ lished in an abstract form (George, 1953a). This study was later extended to cover the 25 Ian seaward region of the estuary in 1954. As is well known, the Malabar coast is highly productive from the fisheries point of view and it was also observed that the sea waters of the inshore region off Calicut are rich in plank­ ton and nutrient salts (George, 1953b). Results of the present investigation would therefore serve to assess the influence of land drainage in the enrichment and re­ plenishment of the coastal waters and allied factors. The west coast of India which is subjected to a heavy rainfall amounting to more than 300):m per annum, is characterised by numerous short and swift rivers which carry the enormous amounts of the waters from the Western Ghats into the sea. " ToPOGRAPHY OF THE EsTUARY The Korapuzha is a short and shallow river, 52 km long and consists of the Elathur River which joins the Korapuzha backwater system close to the mouth of the estuary about a kilometer away from the sea and another stream running from the foot of the high mountain range surrounding the Kodiyanadumalai (700 Metres) which also empties into the back-waters near Kaniangode about 16 Ian away from the river mouth.
