The ‘yearnings of the heart to the Infinite’: The Dial and Transcendentalist Music Criticism” by WESLEY T. MOTT “When my hoe tinkled against the stones, that music echoed to the woods and the sky . and I remembered with as much pity as pride, if I remembered at all, my acquaintances who had gone to the city to attend the oratorios.” So wrote contrary Henry Thoreau in “Walden” (1854; [Princeton UP, 1971], p. 159). His literary acquaintances, in fact, had made important contributions to the emergence of music criticism in Boston a decade earlier in the Transcendentalist periodical, the Dial. Published from 1840 to 1844 and edited by Margaret Fuller and Ralph Waldo Emerson, the Dial promised readers in the first issue to give voice to a “new spirit” and to “new views and the dreams of youth,” to aid “the progress of a revolution . united only in a common love of truth, and love of its work” (the Dial, 4 vols. [rpt. New York: Russell & Russell, 1961], 1:1-2. The definitive study is Joel Myerson, The New England Transcendentalists and the Dial: A History of the Magazine and Its Contributors [Rutherford, NJ: Fairleigh Dickinson UP, 1980]). Featuring poetry, essays, reviews, and translations on an eclectic range of literary, philosophical, theological, and aesthetic topics, the Dial published only four articles substantially about music: one by John Sullivan Dwight, one by John Francis Tuckerman, and two by Fuller (excluding her lengthy study Romaic and Rhine Ballads [3:137-80] and brief commentary scattered in review articles). Each wrote one installment of an annual Dial feature for 1840-42—a review of the previous winter’s concerts in Boston. -

However, in what do their individualisms consist and to what degree do they resemble each other? This essay demonstrates that James’s individualism is strikingly similar to Emerson’s. By taking James’s own understanding of Emerson’s philosophy as a touchstone, I argue that both see individualism to consist principally in self-reliance, receptivity, and vocation. Putting these two figures’ understandings of individualism in comparison illuminates under-appreciated aspects of each figure, for example, the political implications of their individualism, the way that their religious individuality is politically engaged, and the importance of exemplarity to the politics and ethics of both of them. Emersonian Individuality, According to James William James had Ralph Waldo Emerson in his bones.1 He consumed the words of the Concord sage, practically from birth. Emerson was a family friend who visited the infant James to bless him. James’s father read Emerson’s essays out loud to him and the rest of the family, and James himself worked carefully through Emerson’s corpus in the 1870’s and then again around 1903, when he gave a speech on Emerson (Carpenter 1939, p. 41; James 1982, p. 241). -

Barge August 2018 Major Subject: Communication Copyright 2018 David Nicholas Munson ABSTRACT In this project, I track the development of Margaret Fuller’s rhetoric of transcendental nationalism within the context of the Roman revolution in 1848. My central purpose is to situate the legacy of Margaret Fuller in the field of rhetorical theory and criticism, as well as to position her dispatches from Italy as the culmination of her work—not an eclipse of her previous writings, but a vital part of any understanding of the woman, the writer, the Transcendentalist, the feminist, the nationalist, the revolutionary that was Margaret Fuller. Furthermore, I argue that Fuller’s dispatches offer a model for a distinctly transcendental form of nationalism through her combined skills, such as critiquing large networks of power, her classical knowledge and familiarity with the language of myth, her growing narrative form and structure, her love of German-Romantic philosophy and literature, her literary nationalist voice, and her deeply-rooted belief in the collective power of the Italian people. Although arriving as a travel-writer abroad, Fuller was also a foreign correspondent for the New-York Tribune with the task of reporting back on any and all happenings. Europe, at the time, was in a tumultuous state, which would soon erupt in open insurrection and full-blown revolution. -

Ralph Waldo Emerson How Transcendentalism Started • Transcendentalism was an intellectual movement founded by Emerson that affected most of the writers of his day. • It was influenced heavily by German philosopher Immanuel Kant's philosophy that defined spiritual enlightenment as the understanding a person gains intuitively. • During the 1830's and 1840's, Ralph Waldo Emerson and a small group of like-minded intellectual friends gathered regularly in his study to discuss philosophy, religion, and literature. The group, known as the Transcendental Club, developed a philosophical system that stressed intuition, individuality, and self-reliance. • In 1836, Emerson published "Nature," a lengthy essay that became the Club's unofficial statement of belief. The Club also published a quarterly journal, The Dial , in search of a wider audience for their ideas. What Transcendentalists Believed • The Transcendentalists believed that the human senses could know only physical reality. • To the Transcendentalists, the fundamental truths of existence lay outside the reach of the sense and could be grasped only through intuition. • As a result, the Transcendentalists focused their attention on the human spirit and it’s relationship to nature. • Through the careful observation of nature, they believed that the human spirit is reflected in the natural world. • This led them to the conclusion that formed the heart of their beliefs: All forms of being - God, nature, and humanity - are spiritually united through a shared universal soul, or Over-Soul . -

This dissertation explores this matter through a textual analysis of the role of the novelistic dimension of the Emile. Despite the vast literature on Rousseau’s manner of writing, critical aspects of the novelistic form of the Emile remain either misunderstood or overlooked. This study challenges the prevailing image in the existing scholarship by arguing that Rousseau’s Emile is a prime example of how form and content can fortify each other. The novelistic structure of the Emile is inseparable from Rousseau’s conception and communication of his philosophy. That is, the novelistic form of the Emile is not simply harmonious with the substance of its philosophical content, but its form and content also merge to reinforce Rousseau’s capacity to express his teachings. The Transcendentalists “Good men must not obey the laws too well.” Ralph Waldo Emerson Transcendentalism: A Branch of the Romanticism Movement .Falls under the umbrella of the American Romantic movement (1800-1860). The majority of the Transcendentalists works were written in the 1830s and 1840s. .It began as a protest against the general state of the society and of the religious doctrines being taught at Harvard College. The focus is that the ideas of an individual are more important than following a religious doctrine. .Emphasizes an appreciation and a deep connection to nature. The Origins of the Movement .Transcendentalism took off as a literary and cultural movement after Ralph Waldo Emerson published the essay “Nature” in 1836, which stressed the importance of the divine soul. “In the woods, we return to reason and faith. There I feel that nothing can befall me in life, -- no disgrace, no calamity, (leaving me my eyes,) which nature cannot repair. Standing on the bare ground, -- my head bathed by the blithe air, and uplifted into infinite space, -- all mean egotism vanishes. I become Ralph Waldo Emerson a transparent eye-ball; I am nothing; I see all; the currents of the Universal Being circulate through me; I am part or particle of God.” .Those who supported this view formed a group called the Transcendental Club. Members were all living in the New England area and included Margaret Fuller, Emerson, Henry David Thoreau and Frederick Hedge. All were published authors during their time. Specifically, it addresses the problem of social tyranny, whereby prevailing cultural-political groups seek to establish their opinions/sentiments as sacrosanct and to immunize them from criticism by inflicting non-legal penalties on dissenters. Having theorized the complexion of factionalism in American democracy, I then recommend the political thought of Ralph Waldo Emerson as containing intellectual and moral insights beneficial to the counteraction of social tyranny. In doing so, I directly challenge two leading interpretations of Emerson, by Richard Rorty and George Kateb, both of which filter his thought through Friedrich Nietzsche and Walt Whitman and assimilate him to a secular-progressive outlook. I argue that Rorty and Kateb’s political theories undercut Emerson’s theory of self-reliance by rejecting his ethic of humility and betraying his classically liberal disposition, thereby squandering a valuable resource to equip individuals both to refrain from and resist social tyranny. -

His experience before and during the voyage contributed to the evolution of a self-intuitive philosophy, termed selbstgefühl by the German Romantics and altered his careful style of composition and delivery to promote the integrity of individual subjectivity as the highest authority in the deduction of truth.
