SWL Sgt. Johnny Cash
SWL Sgt. Johnny Cash - *1932-2003* (Rosanne Cash has an album “Black Cadillac” One of the tracks is titled “Radio Operator.” I was aware of her dad being an intercept intelligence code operator in Germany. Could she be paying tribute to her famous father? I’d like to think so. Johnny Cash is not an easy subject to write about because of precious little known about JR’s younger life. We will not be dealing with the Megastar’s wealth, fame or holdings, but attempt to bring out his love for Morse code and circuit training. Born J R Cash, in 1932 to Ray (farmer) and Carrie Rivers (Reba) Cash, location Kingsland, Cleveland County Arkansas, one of six children. Our young JR worked alongside his parents and siblings in the fields. The influence of those hard early days inspired him to write songs as “Pickin Time, Five Feet High and Rising and Look at Them Beans.” Johnny would listen to the radio at night, picking out the Memphis stations with their mix of country and blues songs - as well as gospel and Irish folk music sung by his mother. Our subject graduated from high school, Dryess northeast Arkansas – That was in 1950 and plans for work in Detroit did not materialize and joined the U.S. Air Force 7 July 1950. The Air Force would not accept initials as his name, thus he adopted John R. Cash as his legal name upon enlisting. (Lackland Base awaited at San Antonio) Johnny earned the rank of Sergeant in the Air Force Security Service, spending 3 years stationed in Landsberg, Germany. -

The Russians have a habit of disconnecting the phone line if there is no audio on them. so ABC decided to run WABC programming on the line. The programming became so popular among those hearing it that the word spread fast, and dedications and requests were called in from Moscow. According to WABC's Rick Sklar the station is having their "$25,000 Buttons" made up in Russian and they'll ship them over for distribu- tion. Apparently the sensation of hearing American commercial radio was tremendous. Bootleg tapes of WABÇ, made from the control room at Soyuz were in demand. WABCYhad a translator from Columbia University work up the dedications and one liners. as New York and Moscow were treated to the most listened to rock station in our nation, (and in Russia) HENNES IS BACK IN ACTION Bill Hennes has announced he accepted the PD position at WNDE /Indianapolis. WNDE is currently a top 40 format, but in a very low rating position. Hennes noted that it would become an interesting market battle between WNDE and WIFE.BiIl will also be able to conduct outside consulting. He currently consults for WHNN /Sag- Maw and a few others. Hennes was formerly PD at CKLW. -

April 2013 Newsletter ------------------------------------ Yesterday & Today Records P O Box 54 Miranda NSW 2228 Ph: (02) 95311710 Email: [email protected] Web: www.yesterdayandtoday.com.au ---------------------------------------------------------- Postage 1cds $2/ 2 cds $3/ 3/4/5 cds $8 ---------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to the first newsletter of the year. This is a slash and burn newsletter with some bargains you won’t believe possible. As hard as it may seem to believe major label country just keeps getting worse. There are still some vestiges of quality on the major labels but they are ignored by the radio programmers. Dwight’s latest was a return to Reprise but sold only 75,000 copies as radio programmers deemed it too country to play. Ditto Jamey Johnson’s wonderful Hank Cochran tribute. Sold poorly. It seems that there are so many guided by what the mainstream radio plays that they are too dim to vary their buying habits and embrace the true stuff. Again I like to think of Yesterday & Today Records as some kind of alternate universe where the true fans are rewarded. Early in the year, releases tend to be of fairly low volume but there have been some absolute stunners, including favourite Amber Digby. 2012 Albums of the Year 1) Tim Culpepper “Pourin’ Whiskey on Pain” $28 If we had such a thing as a People’s Choice award this would also be the winner...so maybe can be a dual winner. The album owes more than a nod to Mark Chesnutt’s classic “Too Cold at Home” and that is not a bad thing. -
