Spragg Sound Roots Glenn Miller was one of the foremost popular music celebrities of the twentieth century. The creative musician and successful businessman was remarkably intuitive and organized, but far from perfect. His instincts were uncanny, although like any human being, he made mistakes. His record sales, radio popularity, and box-office success at theaters and dance halls across the nation were unsurpassed. He had not come to fame and fortune without struggle and was often judgmental and stubborn. He had remarkable insight into public taste and was not afraid to take risks. To understand Miller is to appreciate his ideals and authenticity, essential characteristics of a prominent man who came from virtually nothing. He sincerely believed he owed something to the nation he loved and the fellow countrymen who bought his records. The third child of Lewis Elmer Miller and Mattie Lou Cavender, Alton Glen Miller was born March 1, 1904, at 601 South 16th Street in Clarinda, a small farming community tucked in the southwest corner of Iowa. Miller’s middle name changed to Glenn several years later in Nebraska. His father was an itinerant carpenter, and his mother taught school. His older brother, Elmer Deane, was a dentist. In 1906 Miller’s father took his family to the harsh sand hills of Tryon, Nebraska, near North Platte. The family moved to Hershey, Nebraska, in the fall of 1912 and returned to North Platte in July 1913, where Glenn’s younger siblings John Herbert and Emma Irene were born. -

An interface for manipulating these elements is suggested, based on the concept of a disk-jockey turntable as a performance instrument. A system is developed around this idea, enabling optical pickup of visual informa- tion from physical media as input to processes on the computer. Software architecture(s) are discussed and examples are implemented, illustrating the potential uses of the interface for the purpose of creative expression in the virtual domain. -

W. de BRUYN. 789.983: 621.395.625.3: 681.84.087.27 The term "electronic music" is sometimes used when compositions, written for conventional musical instruments, are performed with the aid of electronic devices such as the Hammond organ, the "Ündes Martenot" or electtonic music synthesizers **). In recent years, however, the term has come (,0 mean something quite different, being applied to music whose actual composition is based on the use of electronic aids, especially of magnetic recording. These aids can be so employed as to produce entirely new sounds, of which neither the Hammond organ nor any conuentiorusl instrument would be capable. One of the leading figures in this new field of electronic music is the Dutch composer Henk Badings. His radiophonic opera "Ürestes" , in which electronic aids play a substantial part, was awarded the Prix Iuilio. in 1954 and has since received more than 200 performances. In his ballet music "Cain and Abel" - which had its first public performance in May 1956 at The Hague - he makes almost exclusive use of electronic aids. Badings' decision to undertake such an experiment evidently owes much to the fact that, having studied engineering at Delft, he has always been keenly interested in technological problems, particularly in those of an acoustical nature. The fairly extensive range of electrooie instrumerus required to produce "Cain and Abel" was placed at Badings' disposal by Philips Research Laboratories in Eindhoven. It washere that the score was realized jointly by the composer and the co-author of the present article and recorded for performance on magnetic tape. -

2012 CONFERENCE ABSTRACTS IN A GENESEE GROOVE: CULTURE, INDUSTRY AND RECORDED SOUND IN ROCHESTER Thursday 8:45a-10:45a Plenary Session Flour/Flower Power: Rochester's Music from Jenny Lind to George Eastman Gerry Szymanski, Sibley Music Library, Eastman School of Music As one of America’s first boomtowns, Rochester expanded at a rapid pace after the completion of the Erie Canal. But how did it go from a hardscrabble frontier settlement to a world-renowned bastion of concert music? Gerry Szymanski will explore the early music history of a city that moved from flour mills to flower beds and on to become the photographic capital of the world. From the visit of Swedish Nightingale Jenny Lind in 1851, until the grand opening of the Eastman Theatre with the silent (yet accompanied) Prisoner of Zenda, Gerry will review a panorama of Rochester’s contributions to the world of music. The Flowering of the Phonograph in the Flower City Tim Fabrizio The Phonograph came to Rochester, NY on May 20th 1878, a short time after the formation of the Edison Speaking Phonograph Company. Thereby began a relationship between this city and recorded sound, manifest in the enterprise and commerce spawned by Edison's great achievement. Rochester's journey through the early history of recorded sound was both prosaic and unique, an American odyssey in an age of invention. Howard Hanson on Record Uncle Dave Lewis, Uncle Dave Archive For 40 years, Howard Hanson was the guiding light of the Eastman School of Music; today he is best remembered as one of America's great 20th Century composers and perhaps her leading symphonist of that era. -
