However, like in most once-isolated parts of the world, the group has experienced the effects of the outside world more heavily in recent years than before, especially since the construction of a road into the Comarca in 1970 . Tourists now visit the region in greater numbers and packaged products are regularly imported into the Comarca, which lacks the infrastructure to manage inorganic waste. -

Regional and Sectoral Economic Studies Vol. 10-1 (2010) LOCATION DETERMINANTS OF BUSINESS SERVICES WITHIN A REGION WITH LARGE URBAN ASYMMETRIES RUBIERA, Fernando* PARDOS, Eva GÓMEZ-LOSCOS, Ana Abstract We carry out an analysis of the determinants of location for business services within a region, as opposed to the more usual comparisons among nations or regions. The expected higher concentration patterns at this level can be further biased when one or more urban centers have a disproportionate weight in regional economic activity. We propose an econometric analysis of location determinants (scale, urbanization and agglomeration economies, human capital and infrastructures) taking into account the influence of this kind of asymmetry. To this end, we identify one region with this characteristic (a disproportionate weight of the capital city’s share with respect to the total, as shown via several location coefficients), namely the Spanish region of Aragon. Using intra-regional data, our results show that including the capital city in the regressions or not alters the conclusions on the determinants of location. Introduction Business services are non-financial services that contribute as intermediate inputs to improving business competitiveness through interactive co-productions. They include not only traditional activities such as rentals, accounting, security or cleaning services, but also advanced activities such as computing, engineering, R&D or advanced consultancy services. These are branches that are defined as strategic for the rest of the economic activity sectors in a country or region. RESTRICTED WORLD TRADE WT/ACC/PAN/4 9 May 1995 ORGANIZATION (95-1194) Original: English ACCESSION OF PANAMA Memorandum on Services Regime The following communication has been received from the Permanent Mission of Panama. _______________ The Permanent Mission of Panama to the World Trade Organization herewith submits the following memorandum on the Services Regime of the Republic of Panama for the information of member countries examining the accession of Panama to the Organization. WT/ACC/PAN/4 Page 2 Memorandum on Services Regime I. Market structure The services sector represents approximately 73 per cent of the Gross Domestic Product of the Republic of Panama. The geographic position has structured a wide economic activity specialized in services. During the Conquest and Colonization, the country was the path for precious metal flows to Europe, as well as the fairs of Chagres, Nombre de Dios and Portobelo were a trade centre across the sea. Afterwards, the industry development and the expansion of world trade made necessary the modernization of the transisthmian route, with the construction of the Transisthmian Railroad first, and then, with the Panama Canal. Due to the advantages obtained with these transportation facilities, in 1948 the Colon Free Zone was created, conceived as a centre for the development of trade, storage and reshipment of any kind of goods exchanged in the international market. Since the 1970s the International Banking Centre began its operations. More recently, the Panama Stock Exchange has been created. Support services activities such as ports and airports services have also contributed to generate a platform of services, that has shaped the economic development of the country. -

Panama Canal Railway Coordinates: 8.97702°N 79.56773°W From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia The Panama Canal Railway is a railway line that runs parallel to the Panama Canal, linking the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean in Central America. The Panama Canal Railway Company route stretches 47.6 miles (76.6 km) across the Isthmus of Panama from Colón (Atlantic) to Balboa (Pacific, near Panama City). It is operated by Panama Canal Railway Company (reporting mark: PCRC), which is jointly owned by Kansas City Southern and Mi-Jack Products. [2] The Panama Canal Railway currently provides both freight and passenger service. The infrastructure of this railroad (formerly named the Panama Railway or Panama Rail Road ) was of vital importance for the construction of the Panama Canal over a parallel route half a century later. The principal incentive for the building of the rail line was the vast increase in traffic to California owing to the 1849 California Gold Rush. Construction on the Panama Railroad began in 1850 and the first revenue train ran over the full length on January 28, 1855.
