The objective is to identify potential barriers to adoption and strategies to improving conditions for adoption. The analysis for Panama is complemented with case studies of two countries in the region namely Costa Rica and Colombia. Also experiences from the United States are at times integrated. In October 28, 2019, Panama approved, via Cabinet Resolution 103, a National Strategy of Electric Mobility and instituted the Interagency Commission of Electric Mobility. The strategy proposed achieving the following goals by 2030: • 25% to 40% share of electric vehicles in car sales. • 10% to 20% of electric cars in the private vehicle fleet. • 25% to 50% of electric cars in the Government fleet. • 15% to 35% of electric buses in the fleets with authorized concession. The national strategy has 24 action areas to support electric mobility, mapped into four pillars, namely: • Governance • Regulation • Strategic Sectors, and • Knowledge and Education. The present analysis uses a theoretical framework known as Technology Innovation Systems (TIS), to define the factors that will help first characterize, and ultimately explain the status of electric vehicle markets. TIS recognizes that new technology adoption is not adequately supported with individual, disconnected measures, programs, or policies, and instead it takes a broad and integrated perspective on the process of technology adoption. The general logic behind using TIS is to start from an understanding of the conditions needed for innovation to flourish, 11 evaluate the existing conditions in a given market (Panama, in this case), identify the missing parts (deterrents to innovation), and apply domain expertise to evaluate the central areas for future work. To adequately support electric vehicle market adoption, eight areas of activity, known as functions, are necesary. These functions are described in Table ES 1, including examples of indicators that could be looked at, for the case of electric mobility. Data to evaluate these functions were obtained from public documents, publicly available information, and interviews with local stakeholders. Table ES 1. Objective: To examine the interrelationships between preschool child stunting and gastrointestinal infections within the biophysical, social and spatial context of extreme poverty among the Ngäbe in Western Panama where conditional food voucher (FV) and cash transfer (CT) programs occurred. Methods: A 16-mo longitudinal study of 356 preschool children involved two reinfection cycles following albendazole treatment. Data collection included repeated fecal samples, household socio-behavioural questionnaires, multiple dietary records and anthropometric measures, water samples, GPS and participatory workshops. An asset-based household wealth index (HW), an index of household dispersion (HD), index of chronicity of diarrhea (CDI) and protozoan infection (CPI), and dietary pattern scores were generated and incorporated into spatial cluster analysis and multiple regression models of anthropometric and infection outcomes. Influence diagrams created during small group workshops identified participant perceptions of health. Results: Households with higher HWI had a latrine, aqueduct access, cell phone, and/or stove and HD ranged from 5–113 households/km2. High prevalence clusters of hookworm and Trichuris (but not Ascaris) occurred in regions with lowest HWI and HD.

ABSTRACT The objectives of this report are to introduce the climate, geography economy, and people of Panama and with this descriptive perspec­ tive to present the results of an A.I.D. survey of agricultural by-products and wastes. The survey is meant to be qualitative, descriptive, and quantitative so that each waste or by-product is placed in the proper perspective as to size, location, and problems. To examine the potential means for utilizing the most promising waste materials in the animal industry of Panama the report attempts to examine the current size of the industry and the current status of supply of other feeds. Production of cattle, swine, and poultry in Panama could be significantly increased if means could be found to use sugar cane, banana, and rice processing waste as animal feed. Almost 30% of the bananas harvested are rejected for poor quality. Although poultry manure is not available in as large an amount as banana waste, its high nitrogen content makes it a valuable material in a country where nitrogen is scarce.
