Since that time he has been a wonderful colleague who has always encouraged me in my academic pursuits. The relationship between the Dead Sea Scrolls and Christian- ity has fueled the imagination of both scholar and layperson since their discovery in 1947. Were the early Christians aware of the com- munity at Qumran and their texts? Did these groups interact in any way? religions Article The Covenant Renewal Ceremony as the Main Function of Qumran Daniel Vainstub Department of Bible, Archaeology and Ancient Near East, Ben‑Gurion University, Beer Sheva 8410501, Israel; [email protected] Abstract: Unlike any other group or philosophy in ancient Judaism, the yahad sect obliged all mem‑ ˙ bers of the sect to leave their places of residence all over the country and gather in the sect’s central site to participate in a special annual ceremony of renewal of the covenant between God and each of the members. The increase of the communities that composed the sect and their spread over the en‑ tire country during the first century BCE required the development of the appropriate infrastructure for hosting this annual gathering at Qumran. Consequently, the hosting of the gathering became the main function of the site, and the southern esplanade with the buildings surrounding it became the epicenter of the site. HODSON Abstract: The announcement by the Huntington Library in September 1991 of its decision to open for unrestricted research its photographs of the Dead Sea Scrolls touched off a battle of wills between the library and the official team of scrolls editors, as well as a blitz of media publicity. The action was based on a commitment to the principle of intellectual freedom, but it must also be considered in light of the ethics of donor agreements and of access restrictions. The author relates the story of the events leading to the Huntington's move and its aftermath, and she analyzes the issues involved. About the author: Sara S. Hodson is curator of literary manuscripts at the Huntington Library. Her articles have appeared in Rare Books & Manuscripts Librarianship, Dictionary of Literary Biography Yearbook, and the Huntington Library Quarterly. Cox, Ph.D. Dr. Cox is Research Professor of New Testament and Greek at Mid-America Baptist Theological Seminary Memphis, Tennessee ew Testament (henceforth NT) scholars often acknowledge Jesus’ identity or closeness in theology Nto Pharisaical Judaism; however, such statements are generalized without any discussion of their mutual theological positions. Yet, Jesus and the Pharisees were constantly at odds with one another. In the first section of this article I will review a variety of sources, both primary and secondary, concerning Jesus, the Pharisees, and first-century Judaism. Sources naturally will include the Old Testament (henceforth OT), the NT, Josephus, and the Mishnah, though these sources are not exhaustive concerning the topic. In the second section I will discuss beliefs and practices that were common to all Jews. Theological issues such as monotheism, nationalism, the law, and other topics will be discussed. In the third section I will discuss Jesus and Pharisaical Judaism’s kinship by comparing their similarities and how they differ from other first-century Jewish sects. Theological issues such as the afterlife, resurrection, place of worship, the OT canon, and other topics also will be discussed. In the fourth section I will compare and contrast Jesus’ teachings with those of Pharisaical Judaism. Agents of Resurrection in 4Q521, the Sayings Source Q and 4QPseudo-Ezekiel* Benjamin Wold, Trinity College Dublin For presentation at Durham University’s Seminar for the Study of Judaism in Late Antiquity (Nov. 11, 2010) Since its publication in 1992, 4Q521 (“Messianic Apocalypse”) has become one of the most discussed discoveries from Qumran.1 The reasons for this are not difficult to understand when fragment 2 column ii is read alongside Matthew 11,1-6 and Luke 7,18-23 (from the sayings source Q). The Hebrew fragment 4Q521 2 ii preserves a reference to a messiah (ln. 1) and shortly thereafter refers to Isaiah 61,1-2 with only one significant addition: the dead are raised (ln. 12). The document 4Q521 is preserved in sixteen fragments and several other references to messiah(s) and resurrection are found among them. The Background and Significance of the Dead Sea Scrolls HARTMUT STEGEMANN Georg-August-Universita¨tGo¨ttingen ONCEUPONATIME there was a beautiful young princess who—together with all her staff and all the animals within her palace—fell asleep for a long period of time. An angry fairy had put a curse on her to cause her to die by pricking her finger with a spindle. But afterwards, another more gracious fairy had turned her fate into a long sleep until one day a bold prince should enter her chamber and wake her. Meanwhile, her castle became surrounded by a great number of trees, interlaced with brambles and thorns, a hedge so thick that neither man nor beast could penetrate it. There are several possible ways to identify the leading figure of this fairy tale with Qumran topics. There are three suitable candidates for an identifica- tion with Sleeping Beauty, namely the scrolls hidden in the caves, the often neglected reports by some ancient writers on the Essenes, and the ruins of Chirbet Qumran, lonely for almost a hundred generations. Each of these possible identifications also includes a well-known rescuing prince, even if none of those first heroes succeeded in becoming the decisive saviour of Sleeping Beauty. Meanwhile, half a century of research since the discovery of the first Qumran scrolls has produced more than ten thousand manuscript editions, scholarly books, and learned articles on this subject. Nevertheless, many of the basic riddles of these unexpected findings are still unresolved. Some helpful suggestions in earlier stages of Qumran research are again over- whelmed by new thorns, and the younger generation of Qumran scholars seems to be occupied much more with mistaken results of earlier research than with Proceedings of the British Academy, 97, 1–14. -
The Dead Sea Scrolls
A VISIT TO SOME DEAD SEA SCROLLS. November 2007 As remembered by Bill Huntley and Lillian Larsen On this morning after the encounter with some of the Dead Sea Scrolls in San Diego's Museum of Natural History, I find myself inspired by the memorable encounter with the ancient writings and those who hid them for almost two thousand years in the caves near Qumran, the keen questions and insights of a hundred Redlands students, alums, and their friends,; and the organizing skills of Ms. Coco Haupt who brought us all together for a day of inquiry. I must confess to some anxiety at the prospect of trying to answer questions from a hundred different perspectives when I was not sure which scrolls would be on display, my first move was to invite my new colleague in Religious Studies at the U. of R.; Dr, Lillian Larsen, who teaches Christian Scriptures as well as World Religions. She brings a background in Greek and Coptic languages to the Scrolls, more recent than my study 40 years ago in a class in which we were assigned small fragments of the Hodayot (Psalm Scroll). Driving down for this opportunity, as I went over the hill South of Temecula and saw first hand the extent of the fires on both sides of the 15 Freeway, it framed what I might say today. What I saw on the 15 Freeway gave a sense of the destruction that happened just last week, [and 2000 years ago at] Qumran. Those who wrote the Scrolls met just such a fate, by the human agency of the Romans. -

The Eschatology of the Dead Sea Scrolls J. Randall Price, Ph.D. Center for Judaic Studies Liberty University [email protected] Recent unrest in the Middle East regularly stimulates discussion on the eschatological interpretation of events within the biblical context. In light of this interest it is relevant to consider the oldest eschatological interpretation of biblical texts that had their origin in the Middle East – the Dead Sea Scrolls. This collection of some 1,000 and more documents that were recovered from caves along the northwestern shores of the Dead Sea in Israel, has become for scholars of both the Old and New Testaments a window into Jewish interpretation in the Late Second Temple period, a time known for intense messianic expectation. The sectarian documents (non-biblical texts authored by the Qumran Sect or collected by the Jewish Community) among these documents are eschatological in nature and afford the earliest and most complete perspective into the thinking of at least one Jewish group at the time of Jesus’ birth and the formation of the early church. -

An Evaluation of the Evidence in the Context of Other Alternate JeWish Practices in the Late Second Temple Period (Under the direction of Donald C. Haggis) This thesis reexamines the evidence for JeWish sacrificial cult at the site of Khirbet Qumran, the site of the Dead Sea Scrolls, in the first centuries BCE and CE. The interpretation of the animal remains discovered at the site during the excavations conducted by Roland de Vaux and subsequent projects has long been that these bones are refuse from the “pure” meals eaten by the sect, as documented in various documents among the Dead Sea Scrolls. However, recent scholarship has revisited the possibility that the sect residing at Qumran conducted their own animal sacrifices separate from the Jerusalem temple. This thesis argues for the likelihood of a sacrificial cult at Qumran as evidenced by the animal remains, comparable sacrificial practices throughout the Mediterranean, contemporary literary Works, and the existence of the JeWish temple at Leontopolis in lower Egypt that existed at the same time that the sect resided at Qumran. -
