Chronica naturae, 3: 5-6 (2013) editorial La divulgación científica; una especie en vías de desarrollo. El conocimiento es el único recurso que se incrementa con su uso. Al contrario de lo Editorial que sucede con los recursos físicos, los cuales se consumen y proporcionan rendimientos decrecientes con el tiempo, el conocimiento suministra rendimientos crecientes con su utilización. Cuanto más se usa, tanto más valioso es y más ventaja proporciona; este argu- mento ha sido recogido en recientes estudios económicos, estudios en los que también se señala que el no haber seguido este criterio ha sido una significativa causa generadora de la actual crisis. Y en el caso concreto de España, la mayor parte de los análisis coinciden en admitir que se ha vivido un modelo insostenible que ha apostado por la especulación y no por el conocimiento. Y en este contexto nos parece fundamental reflexionar sobre la importancia de difundir, divulgar los conocimientos, algo que constituye de por sí, una de las premisas básicas de la revista Chronica naturae. La importancia de la difusión del conocimiento no es un tema nuevo. De hecho, el uso del conocimiento disponible ha marcado la historia de las civilizaciones en todas las épocas. En esa línea, un interesante caso para rememorar y tener en cuenta es el de la Biblioteca de Alejandría. Creada en el siglo tercero antes de Cristo, hasta su destrucción, siete siglos más tarde, fue el cerebro y el corazón del mundo antiguo. Es evidente que allí estaban las semillas del mundo moderno. ¿Qué impidió que arraigaran y florecieran? ¿a qué se debió que Occidente se adormeciera posteriormente durante mil años de tinieblas? Entonces, la ciencia y la cultura en general estaban reservadas para unos cuantos privilegiados. La vasta población de la ciudad no tenía la menor idea de los grandes descubrimientos que tenían lugar dentro de la Biblioteca. Los nuevos descubrimientos no fueron explicados ni popu- larizados. La investigación benefició poco a la sociedad. Los grandes logros intelectuales de la antigüedad tuvieron pocas aplicaciones prácticas inmediatas. La ciencia no fascinó nunca la imaginación de la multitud. No hubo contrapeso al estancamiento, al pesimismo. Y como afirma el magnífico astrónomo y divulgador Carl Sagan,cuando al final de todo, la chusma se presentó para quemar la Biblioteca no había nadie capaz de detenerla. Al igual que en aquella época, el trabajo del científico actual, indudablemente, es duro, entregado, casi siempre vocacional y muy meritorio, pero sus frutos deben hacerse colec- tivos, es decir, divulgarse, si no quieren seguir el mismo camino; y menos en un momento histórico como el nuestro, donde quizás, las consecuencias de ese “analfabetismo cien- tífico” sean mucho más peligrosas que en cualquier otra época anterior: es preocupante que el ciudadano promedio mantenga su ignorancia sobre el calentamiento global, la reducción del ozono, la contaminación del aire, los residuos tóxicos y radioactivos, la erosión del suelo, el crecimiento exponencial de la población, la escasez de alimentos, de agua y otros recursos. Evidentemente, divulgar la ciencia no es disponer los resultados de un experimento al acceso de profesionales de la ciencia y gente interesada del sector: para eso ya están las revistas científicas que, por supuesto, ni son divulgativas ni pretenden serlo. Además, en su contra y por lo común, las publicaciones científicas, además de ser muy difíciles de comprender para el no iniciado, pueden ser aburridas, como igualmente pueden ser las comunicaciones a Congresos, incluso para los científicos que no trabajan exactamente en la especialidad de sus contenidos. Divulgar la ciencia es hacerla más accesible al público en general, incidiendo menos en los detalles del trabajo científico. Y se basa en uno de los objetivos que perseguimos: contar los trabajos científicos de una forma más comprensible. Para lo que sin perder precisión, Pág. 05 exactitud y contenido, solo se necesita dar a la comunicación la importancia que merece. Chronica naturae, 3: 5-6 (2013) editorial Editorial Pero aunque todos los responsables de la ciencia, empezando por la Comisión Europea, insisten en la importancia de comunicar los resultados de la investigación a la sociedad, para el investigador no es tarea fácil. Fuera de las publicaciones científicas especializadas, no existe una valoración clara de su contribución a la difusión. El sistema de valoración curricular juega en contra de la producción científica divulgativa. La presión que sufren los investigadores para cumplir los objetivos requeridos en sus distintos ámbitos laborales está mermando el esfuerzo que quizás muchos de ellos empeñarían en divulgar su trabajo a la población general. Incluso a investigadores, cuya inquietud les lleva un paso más allá, hacia la dimensión divulgativa, esta última no sólo no resta nada a su trabajo científico, sino que lo engrandece. Así, podemos observar que de países punteros en ciencia, países como Estados Unidos, Reino Unido, Francia, Alemania, etc., a los que tenemos como modelo, han salido algunos de los más grandes divulgadores científicos del siglo XX, como, Carl Sagan, Stephen Jay Gould o Isaac Asimov. Sin entrar a valorar en manos de quién está cambiar el sistema de valoración curricular que mueve la producción científica, llamamos desde aquí a reflexionar sobre la importancia de la dimensión divulgativa de la ciencia y qué aspectos habría que mejorar para solventar su situación actual.

    VISIONS OF GRANDEUR: HANNIBAL’S GAZE AND EKPHRASIS IN THE PUNICA OF SILIUS ITALICUS by SEAN MATHIS (Under the Direction of Mario Erasmo) ABSTRACT This is a thesis about Silius Italicus, a Latin poet, who wrote his epic poem, the Punica, during the reign of the emperor Domitian. Silius wrote his epic poem in the period after Vergil’s Aeneid, and, like his literary contemporaries, was forced to contend with his poetic forebears in order to insert his own poem into the Latin epic tradition. Thus, the poet looks back to Vergil, his principal poetic predecessor, through his use of allusion, metaphor, and other poetic imagery. The poem is also historical in nature, covering the period leading up to the Second Punic War, and Silius necessarily looks back to his historical predecessors, notably the Latin historian Livy. Silius creates, within the Punica, an interesting allusive technique that allows for a literary dialogue between the historical and epic genres, thus guaranteeing his position as a successor to both Vergil and Livy.
