A great leader both in physical and in psychic science In token of respect This work is dedicated PREFACE This work has grown from small disconnected chapters into a narrative which covers in a way the whole history of the Spiritualistic movement. This genesis needs some little explanation. I had written certain studies with no particular ulterior object save to gain myself, and to pass on to others, a clear view of what seemed to me to be important episodes in the modern spiritual development of the human race. These included the chapters on Swedenborg, on Irving, on A. J. Davis, on the Hydesville incident, on the history of the Fox sisters, on the Eddys and on the life of D. D. Home. These were all done before it was suggested to my mind that I had already gone some distance in doing a fuller history of the Spiritualistic movement than had hitherto seen the light - a history which would have the advantage of being written from the inside and with intimate personal knowledge of those factors which are characteristic of this modern development. It is indeed curious that this movement, which many of us regard as the most important in the history of the world since the Christ episode, has never had a historian from those who were within it, and who had large personal experience of its development. -

Apparitions and Appearances: Ghost Stories and Paranormal Research in the Nineteenth Century in Mary Louisa Molesworth and Ada Goodrich Freer Muhamet Alijaj Abstract Literature on the supernatural became very popular in Victorian society. Ghost stories became widespread and veridical literature and studies on the paranormal arose as well. This essay will deal with an example of fiction, The Rippling Train by Molesworth and a non-fictional investigation, The Alleged Haunting of Bellechin House by Ada Goodrich Freer. The essay will show that while both differ in intent, both represent Victorian angst in terms of the ability to empirically determine reality and its shortcomings as well as attempts to subvert power structures though writing about apparitions. 'Let's tell ghost stories then,' said Gladys. 'Aren't you tired of them? One hears nothing else nowadays.’ Thus begins Mary Louisa Molesworth’s The Rippling Train (1887). Ghost stories during the Victorian era were intensely popular thanks in large part to the repeal of the newspaper tax in 1885 which saw many relatively cheap periodical publishing from Tinsley’s Magazine to Dickens’ All the Year Round. Ghost stories featured prominently in them and fuelled the Victorian taste for the supernatural. However, these ghost stories would resemble more the realist fiction of the era than gothic literature, and the later half of the Victorian period saw the rise of collections of true ghost stories. This fascination fuelled the creation of societies like the Society for Psychical Research, which tried to ascertain the true causes of paranormal evidence.1 Unfortunately, ghost stories have been ignored for the most part by literary scholars. -

THEORIES OF HAUNTING: A CRITICAL OVERVIEW Published in The Journal of the Society for Psychical Research Vol 661, Number 866, January 2002, 1-21 by Peter A. McCue ABSTRACT The term ‘haunting’ is generally applied to cases involving recurrent phenomena, of a supposedly paranormal nature, that are associated with particular places. Approaches to understanding hauntings can be divided into two categories: those that attempt to explain the manifestations ‘naturalistically’ (e.g. in terms of the misinterpretation of normal sounds or the effects underground water), and those that employ concepts such as telepathy or the laying down of a ‘psychic trace’ in the haunted location. Some psi-based theories posit discarnate agency. ‘Naturalistic’ and psi-based theories are reviewed, and suggestions are made regarding possible directions for future research in this area. INTRODUCTION In this article, I shall review various proposals, old and new, that have been advanced to explain hauntings. For brevity, I shall refer to these ideas as theories, even though some of them, while interesting, are little more than tentative hypotheses. Indeed, to the best of my knowledge there are no comprehensive, systematically elaborated, and well- substantiated theories dealing with this area. Moreover, there are problems with definition and categorization, since ‘haunting’ is a traditional term rather than a precise label for a clearly defined set of phenomena known to involve common mechanisms and a single type of agency. Psychical researchers generally apply the term ‘haunting’ to spontaneous cases featuring recurrent manifestations, of an apparently paranormal nature, that seem to be linked with particular places rather than specific people. -

Signature…………………………… 2 Abstract This thesis outlines the canons of evidence developed by the elite Cambridge- based and educated leaders of the Society for Psychical Research to assess anomalous phenomena, and second, describes the gradual shift away from that approach, by their successors and the reasons for such a partial weakening of those standards, and the consequences for the general health of the SPR .It argues that, for a variety of reasons, this methodology has not always been fully appreciated or described accurately. Partly this is to do with the complex personality of Myers who provoked a range of contradictory responses from both contemporaries and later scholars who studied his life and work; partly to do with the highly selective criticisms of his and his colleagues’ work by TH Hall (which criticisms have entered general discourse without proper examination and challenge); and partly to a failure fully to appreciate how centrally derived their concepts and approaches were from the general concerns of late-Victorian science and social science. -

RICHARD HODGSON Richard Hodgson, Jr.—destined to be called “one of the greatest, if not the greatest, psychical researcher” amoung the founders of modern Parapsychology—was born September 24th, 1855, at Melbourne, Australia. Educated in the public schools of the city, he later matriculated at the University of Melbourne, in 1871, becoming a B.A. in 1874, LL.B. in 1875, M.A. in 1876, and LL.D. in 1878, in which year, having completed his law studies at Melbourne, he went to England to enter the University of Cambridge as a scholar of St. John’s College. “There he read for the Moral Sciences Tripos, in which he took honors in 1881, and, on completing his Cambridge course, spent six months in Jena, Germany, attending the University there. Soon after his return to England he lectured for six months in different towns in the north of England in connection with University Extension. His subjects were scientific and literary, The Development of Poetry since 1789, and The Mind and the Senses.”1 Drifting from an early adherence to the doctrines of the Methodist Church, on through the materialistic philosophy of Herbert Spencer—of whom he once counted himself a “disciple,”— Hodgson’s interest focused on Psychical Research. And when the Society for Psychical Research was founded in 1882, Hodgson’s name appeared on the first roster, under the founding Presidency of Henry Sidgwick, Professor of Moral Philosophy at Cambridge, with whom Hodgson had formed a fast and eventually lifetime friendship. -
