Each day, there are millions of social interactions between Jews and Australians who are not Jews, and they are unexceptional and extremely unlikely to produce an environment of confrontation or conflict. However, between 1 October 2011 and 30 September 2012, the database assembled and maintained by the author of this report since 1989 included 543 reports of anti-Jewish violence, vandalism, harassment and intimidation, more than 30% above the previous twenty two year average. The physical manifestations arise in a context of a society in which there are individuals (and organisations) which have anti-Jewish prejudice which equates to, for example, anti-Asian, anti- Aborigine, anti-Arab or anti-African prejudice, expressing itself in terms of racial superiority or, in many cases, believe in and/or advocate antisemitism which goes beyond simple contempt, hatred or discrimination

Sexiest politicians get vote | Herald Sun Page 1 of 2 Sexiest politicians get vote Ben Packham December 08, 2006 12:00am Article from: OUR best-looking politician is not even in Parliament ¿ and John Howard can thank his lucky stars for that. Nicole Campbell, who stood against the Prime Minister, was rated the most attractive candidate at the 2004 election. The Australian National University rated politicians using how-to-vote cards. It wasn't good news for Mr Howard – or Labor leader Kevin Rudd. Proving looks aren't everything, the PM came in 279 out of 286. Mr Rudd did marginally better at 244. But Julie Bishop can take a bow. She has the beauty to match her brainy portfolio. The Education Minister was the most attractive sitting female MP, at fifth overall. Victoria's best looker was newly crowned deputy Labor leader Julia Gillard at No. 12. Rising Liberal star Malcolm Turnbull ran a dapper 18th. Leadership rival Peter Costello (169) has plenty of ground to make up. He wouldn't even beat Kim Beazley (152) in a beauty contest. Health Minister Tony Abbott was rated not too shabby at 96 and Workplace Relations Minister Kevin Andrews was a respectable 114. Labor childcare spokeswoman Tanya Plibersek was looking good at 21, while Victoria's best- looking bloke was Flinders Lib MP Greg Hunt (55). Other highly rated Victorians included Labor member for Ballarat Catherine King (24), and member for Indi Sophie Mirabella (29). ANU's Andrew Leigh, who conducted the study, did not reveal who ran last because it would be unfair.

  • Australia: Extremism and Terrorism
Australia: Extremism and Terrorism On March 17, 2021, authorities arrested brothers Aran and Ari Sherani, ages 19 and 20 respectively, during counterterrorism raids in Melbourne after Aran allegedly purchased a knife in preparation for a terrorist attack. Police alleged Aran was influenced by ISIS. Both brothers were charged in relation to a February 21 attempted attack in Humevale, in which a fire was lit in bushland outside of Melbourne. Aran Shirani also faces charges in relation to a March 9 assault that left one injured. Authorities allege Aran Shirani radicalized online and then radicalized his older brother. (Sources: Guardian, 9News, Australian Press Association) On December 17, 2020, 22-year-old Raghe Abdi threated Australian police officers with a knife on a highway outside of Brisbane and was then shot dead by the authorities. According to police, Abdi was influenced by ISIS. That same day, 87-year-old Maurice Anthill and his 86-year-old wife Zoe were found dead inside their home in Brisbane, where Abdi was believed to have been. Police Commissioner Katarina Carroll Abdi said that though Abdi was a known extremist, the suspect had acted alone, and declared the deaths a terrorism incident. Abdi was arrested on suspicion of joining extremist groups while he attempted to board a flight to Somalia in May 2019. He was released due to lack of evidence, though his passport was canceled. Abdi was again charged in June 2019 on other offenses, including not providing his cellphone passcode to investigators but was freed on bail and given a GPS tracking device to wear.

  • Identifying White Race Privilege
Identifying White Race Privilege Jenny Tannoch-Bland This paper was originally published in Bringing Australia Together: The Structure and Experience of Racism in Australia, The Foundation for Aboriginal and Islander Research Action, Wooloongabba, Qld, 1998, pp.33-38. White people’s race privilege in this country is based on past acts - all white Australians live here because of past actions of murder, massacres, poisoning, torture, dispossession, internment, enslavement and genocide. These acts were committed against Indigenous people on the basis of race - they were racist acts. Australians are having the native title debate now because of these past racist acts. But through talking about white race privilege, I want to suggest that racism in the present is confounding the native title debate. White race privilege is invisible, unearned, denied, systemic, undesirable, and confers dominance. I’d like to approach a definition obliquely, by talking about racism generally. Anecdotal evidence tells me that there is nowadays hardly a family gathering where we don’t hear someone proclaiming ‘I’m not a racist’. What they usually mean is ‘I am not motivated by race hatred to taunt, main or murder.’ What these people understand by racism is race hatred. They do not feel hatred in their hearts, and we as a society no longer condone race hatred. These defensive proclamations are prevalent now because many other people understand racism to be something more complex than race hatred. Most of these people, when they talk about racism, are talking about racial oppression - the systemic or systematic oppression of one race by another. Seeing the situation in terms of racial oppression focuses attention on the oppressed.

  • Holocaust Denial in Australia
ABSTRACT This paper explores the nature of Holocaust denial in Australia. It does so through a study of the beliefs and activities of the three organizations for whom Holocaust denial is a central belief: the Australian League of Rights, the Australian Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), and the Adelaide Institute. Their activities, their international ties, and their relationship with the broader racist Right in Australia is considered. The paper concludes by reflecting on the future directions and responses to Holocaust denial. INTRODUCTION The nature of Australian Holocaust denial organizations, their activities, and their place in broader far Right circles is different from denial organizations in other countries. This is explained by the dominant role of the Australian League of Rights in far Right politics, the civil liberties origins of the Australian Civil Liberties Union, the lack of sizeable neo- Nazi groups in Australia, and the dominance of anti-Aboriginal and anti- Asian issues on the far Right agenda. In addition, unlike many European countries where denial is explained as a response to their wartime collaboration with the Nazis, this motive does not exist in Australia which fought against the Nazis and her allies. Although Holocaust denial is a fringe activity in Australia, it has significantly increased over the last two decades with a concomitant growth in collaboration between Australian and overseas Holocaust deniers. This is not just a Jewish concern for Holocaust deniers have become a leading element within the racist Right with whom they share a common worldview. This is because in addition to their antisemitism, Australian Holocaust deniers expound racist and xenophobic policies and views.

  • Civic and Political Status
Civic and Political Status CIVIL LIBERTIES HE PERIOD between July 1954 and the autumn of 1955 saw a marked im- Tprovement in the general attitude on civil liberties questions in the United States. Many factors contributed to this. A decreased fear of immi- nent war was accompanied by a calmer approach to internal policies. The absence of any evidence of new Communist penetration, either in govern- ment or in other fields, led to a widespread feeling that the danger from con- spiratorial Communist activity had declined. On the other hand, the pub- licity received by a number of cases in which security procedures had been patently misused led to an increased realization of the dangers arising from measures which departed from the spirit of the Bill of Rights. And there could be little doubt that the clash between Sen. Joseph R. McCarthy and the Army, followed by the report of the Senate Select Committee to Study Censure Charges (Watkins Committee) and the Senate censure vote (AMER- ICAN JEWISH YEAR BOOK, 1955 [Vol. 56], p. 184-85), tended to bring the ap- proach generally described as "McCarthyism" into disrepute. Security Program The change was least noticeable in the legislative field, where it took the form of a decrease in new restrictive legislation rather than in the disap- perance of any already on the books. There was, however, a marked altera- tion in both the interests and the behavior of legislative investigating com- mittees. In the executive department, security procedures changed little, and injustices still appeared to be frequent. But when—as increasingly hap- pened—they were brought to public attention, there was a new readiness and even eagerness to remedy them.

This dissertation addresses the story of Physical Culture magazine from three different perspectives, reading the magazine through lenses of media history, medical history and social context, in order to understand the ways in which class operated on and through the body. In contrast to nearly every other publication in the early twentieth century, Physical Culture suggested that class mobility was possible, and that success would naturally follow improvement of body and health.
