We have devoted much energy to helping vegetarians and vegans solve this problem in our various books. We've compiled glossaries of animal-derived additives and hidden ingredients. We've created lists of vegan products and alcoholic drinks. We've published reports on how to distinguish vegetarian and vegan products from non-vegetarian or non-vegan products. However, many vegans and vegetarians have found that hidden animal ingredients inevitably sneak in to the "animal-free" diet, despite their painstaking efforts. How can a vegetarian or vegan successfully eliminate animal products and animal cruelty from their shopping? It sometimes seems impossible, given the complexities of food and cosmetics manufacturing, the cryptic nature of ingredient labels, and the numerous ways that animal ingredients have infiltrated our world. There is a way! The simplest, surest way to pursue a 100% vegan or vegetarian lifestyle is to purchase products from companies and distributors that cater specifically to vegan and vegetarian interests. Not only will this allow you to live free from that nagging suspicion that the broth in your canned "vegetable soup" tastes a bit like beef, but it will support the vegetarian and vegan movements in society. There are a large number of such companies throughout the world. Such companies are managed by conscientious people who ensure that the products they produce are animal-ingredient-free and cruelty-free. They take the time to carefully label their products so vegetarians and vegans can make informed choices about what they purchase and consume. They do the work and analysis to make sure their products are 100% animal-ingredient free so you won't have to! That is why we created this book. It includes a number of different lists, focusing specifically on distributors, manufacturers, and other companies that cater to vegetarian and vegan needs. One chapters focuses on companies to avoid based on their use of animal testing. As always, the final responsibility of being a conscientious consumer rests with you. Please don't stop reading labels or checking manufacturer websites, because companies do change their policies. However, the information in this book can help guide you towards a guilt-free, stress-free, vegan or vegetarian life. Copyright 2004 Chad Kimball 3 Secret Sources of Vegetarian, Vegan, and Cruelty-Free Products Chapter 1 196 Vegan and Vegetarian Food Manufacturers Introduction Like we've said before, the best way to avoid animal ingredients in your food is by simply purchasing foods directly from companies that specialize in manufacturing 100% vegan/vegetarian food and ingredients. That is why we've compiled the list below. For the most part, the companies in this list cater to vegans or vegetarians. These companies are very conscientious about the ingredients they use and the foods they manufacture. Of the companies in this list that don't cater specifically to vegetarians and vegans, most have strict requirements about the kinds of ingredients they use, and will be glad to work with a vegetarian or vegan inquiring about the suitability of their products. The list below was compiled in October 2004 from a variety of sources deemed accurate. Many of these can be purchased online and shipped inexpensively. We welcome corrections or additions to this list. Such corrections can help us ensure that we keep this list as accurate as possible, reflecting the most recent changes in food production. • Frequently Asked Questions
Frequently Asked Questions What Types of Companies Are on the "Don't Test" List? This list includes companies that make cosmetics, personal-care products, household-cleaning products, and other common household products. All companies that are included on PETA's "don't test" list have signed our statement of assurance verifying that they and their ingredient suppliers don't conduct, commission, pay for, or allow any tests on animals for ingredients, formulations, or finished products anywhere in the world and will not do so in the future. We encourage consumers to support the companies on this list, since we know that they're committed to making products without harming animals. Companies on the "Do Test" list should be shunned until they implement a policy that prohibits animal testing. The "do test" list doesn't include companies that manufacture only products that are required by law to be tested on animals (e.g., pharmaceuticals and garden chemicals). Although PETA is opposed to all animal testing, our focus in those instances is less on the individual companies and more on the regulatory agencies that require animal testing. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Legend V - The company makes or sells strictly vegan products. • What You Can Do to Reduce Your Exposure to Chemicals
WHAT YOU CAN DO TO REDUCE YOUR EXPOSURE TO CHEMICALS Eat organically grown food whenever possible. Many pesticides and herbicides are carcinogenic, and many have a chemical structure that is very similar to estrogens. These can stimulate the growth of breast tumors. Organic food is grown without chemicals or hormones and has been found to be much higher in nutrients than foods grown in commercially fertilized, nutrient-depleted soil. Especially, avoid non-organic eggs, dairy products and meats, as hormones and antibiotics are fed to the animals. The following fruits and vegetables have been found to have the highest levels of pesticides (when grown non-organically.) Avoid them unless they are organic: strawberries, bell peppers, spinach, cherries, peaches, cantaloupe, celery, apples, apricots, green beans, Chilean grapes, cucumbers. Foods that tend to be low in pesticides EWG analysis of the latest government test results shows that the following fruits and vegetables have the least pesticide contamination among conventionally-grown foods. Fruits Vegetables 1) Pineapples 1) Avocado 2) Plantains 2) Cauliflower 3) Mangoes 3) Brussels Sprouts 4) Bananas 4) Asparagus 5) Watermelon 5) Radishes 6) Plums 6) Broccoli 7) Kiwi Fruit 7) Onions 8) Blueberries 8) Okra 9) Papaya 9) Cabbage 10) Grapefruit 10) Eggplant Do not use pesticides or herbicides in your home or on your lawn or garden. Lawn and garden chemicals have been found to increase cancer rates in pets and people. Avoid Plastics if possible: Their production releases chlorinated toxins into the environment. Reduce or eliminate the use of plastic containers for food storage. Certain plasticizers, which add flexibility to plastic food wraps, are suspected endocrine disrupters.
