THE ROYAL STANDARD OF SCOTLAND

The red lion rampant with border on a gold field is readily recognized by all Scots as the royal standard. It first appeared as the royal seal of King Alexander in about 1230, and without modification it was borne by all the sovereigns of Scotland. When King James VI became King of England in 1603, the red lion rampant became an integral part of the British Royal Standard, occupying the second quarter, and so The Stone of Destiny remains to this day.
