In the short term, they provided him with hospitality as he moved from property to property; in the longer term, he hoped, they would become the main purchasers of his paintings. In this article I shall give a brief description of the Darling Downs pastoral elite, and look al the personal connections that existed between Martens and many of these people: connections that explain why Martens was received so hospitably during his travels, and why he had a reasonable expectation that they would patronize his work. In addition, though, there were also structural reasons relating to the changing economic and social climate of the early I850s that help explain why these families subsequently bought his paintings. The pastoral industry took off in New South Wales during the 1830s, when Governor Bourke introduced a licensing system that allowed men to squat on Crown Land. High wool prices encouraged speculative investment in sheep, and squatters fanned out with their flocks from the more closely settled districts near Sydney, driving south towards Port Phillip and north into the New England area. -

On September the 9th this year, the Standing Council of Scottish Chiefs is hosting a service in St Giles’ Cathedral in Edinburgh to commemorate the 500th Anniversary of the battle of Flodden. While it might seem a little gloomy to mark the anniversary of Scotland’s most disastrous defeat we are also celebrating 500 years of the Scottish Soldier and raising money for two charities. The first is Combat Stress (www.combatstress.co.uk) - the UK’s leading military charity specialising in the care of Veterans’ mental health. -

Its menu is described as varied New England and Italian fares; the décor is of the Revolutionary period. It stands on the site where American Colonial fighters first confronted British regular troops, which occurred on February 26, 1775. -
The Indian Connection with Tasmania Dr James Broadbent
The Indian Connection with Tasmania Dr James Broadbent For a century or more there has been a romance about Australia’s relationship with India, although the links between the two go back much further – to the beginnings of settlement. The romance is potent in William Hardy Wilson’s evocation of the homestead Horsely , beyond Liverpool in New South Wales – the most Indian of all colonial houses. Wilson wrote, in prose of the most aniline purple: Of the many beautiful homesteads there is one which I shall single out because it is the pleasantest home in New South Wales. Horsely was designed by an officer from the Indian Army who planned his home with memories of bungalows in India to guide, and built it on the top of a serene hill surrounded by a ring of lower hills. At the edge of the plateau where the path ascends, there are two Moreton Bay figs intermingled with sweet-bays forming an entrance archway through which the homestead appears half-submerged in formal shrubs and tall waving grasses. The front has an attractive verandah. There are coupled Doric columns, dark jhilmils with folding white casements between, and round-arched bays at the ends. Within there is a punkah hanging idly from the lofty ceiling, a mark of past luxuriousness. There are high double doors glistening under white paint and polished brasses. On the walls there are remaining a few old portraits, crudely done, and other canvases that present fat tigers pausing in the act of seizing relatives of the Captain Charles Weston who, having escaped these perilous adventures, left India, and came to New South Wales where in 1817 he established himself on this tranquil hill. -
My Dear Miss Macarthur the Leslie Brothers' Settlement of the Darung Downs Is One of the Cornerstones of Queensland History
31 Book Review: My Dear Miss Macarthur The Leslie Brothers' Settlement of the DarUng Downs is one of the cornerstones of Queensland history. Yet, apart from the fact that they were named Patrick, George and Walter and the runs they occupied were known as "Toolburra", "Canning Downs" and "Goomburra" (remnants of which still exist), the average Australian knows little of their origins, their Australian connections and what happened to them eventually. In My Dear Miss Macarthur, Jane de Falbe, in a charming and thoroughly researched work, has taken the memoirs of her husband's grandmother, Emmeline de Falbe, widow of George Leslie, and nee Macarthur, as the foundation on which she has built an explanation of all the things not commonly known about the LesUes. In doing so we gain a further insight into the domestic affairs not only of the Leslies of Warthill and their Davidson relatives but also of the Macarthurs and the Kings to whom the Leslies became so closely related by marriage. Mrs. de Falbe does not hesitate to produce warts and all portraits of her characters — her geese are by no means all swans. For instance while she concedes Patrick Leslie his title (conferred by H.S. Russell) of "Prince of Bushmen" she does not hesitate to detail his impetuosity and lack of managerial capacity. It was this failing that made him prey to the pitless mercantilism of Walter S. Davidson and loaded him with debt for so many years of his life. Walter Davidson's acquisitive greed for wealth is not concealed but despite the vast fortune he accumulated he had the disappointment of knowing the bulk of it could go to his two ne'er-do-well sons, although one did predecease him by barely a year. -
********************************************************************************* GENEALOGISTS for the SCOTTISH CLANS by Robert D
********************************************************************************* GENEALOGISTS FOR THE SCOTTISH CLANS by Robert D. McLaren 7810 Kincardine Court Alexandria, VA 22315-4025 (703) 971-6924 [email protected] 8 April 2000 Version 2000-3 © Copyright 2000 Robert D. McLaren The following list is a compilation of Clan Genealogists or Clan points of contact for genealogy (for the Scottish Clans and Family Associations). The amount of information available from these genealogists varies greatly, with some having extensive records. For example, the clan genealogist for Clan Scott maintains a database of all SCOTTs and is a coordinator of the SCOTT One Name Society. He has about 53,000 records on file dealing with more than 2,000 family lines. The clan genealogist/historian for Clan Barclay also is a coordinator for the BARCLAY One Name Society. She has about 19,000 BARCLAY/BARKLEY and collateral names on file dealing with 125 family lines. The Clan Morrison historian has a 6,000-name database of MORRISON families in the U.S. and Canada. Some clans have genealogy committees. When I learn about them I will include committee members in this listing. Some of these members only cover one or a few states. In these cases, I note the states that particular member covers. Also, some clan genealogists specialize in one surname of a clan. Clan MacKay, for example, has many surname genealogists. I am listing these surnames under the parent clan with a note (i.e., See also Mackie). The actual genealogist and his/her address will be listed under the surname (i.e., Mackie). For some clans, more than one society exists. -
