Introduction - "The Environment" When is a contract not a contract? Where is job security as fleeting as the last seconds of a basketball victory? In what field is an employment contract broken as easily as made? None other than in the world of college coaching. At the commencement of the 1988-89 college basketball season, a total of 39 schools or approximately 13.4% of the 294 Division I institu- tions had new coaches at the helm.1 This compares with an all-time high of 66 new coaches or approximately 22.8% of Division I schools during the previous season.2 During the 1980s, approximately 384 coaching changes have taken place in Division I schools.3 Approximately 53 basketball coaches have changed jobs since the end of the 1989-90 season.4 The Amer- ican Football Coaches Association indicates that head football coaches re- main in NCAA Division I-A football programs for an average of only 2.8 years.5 The number of coaches employed at the 279 schools that have played in Division I Men's Basketball for all of the past 15 seasons include: Copyright 1991 by Martin J.

He joined the Jacket staff in 1951 and later became B team coach. Frank Broyles was a former all-around Georgia Tech athletic great and joined the staff after the 1950 season as backfield coach. Earl Bortell came to Tech in 1921 to teach school but took over the tennis team in 1932 and has held the job since then. H. E. Dennison came to Tech in 1929 and became Faculty Man- ager and Director of the golf team in 1931. Norris Dean is a graduate of Georgia Tech who joined the stall after graduation and took over the helm of the track team in 1943. Ray Graves came from the Philadelphia Eagles to Tech in 1947. He has been head line coach since then. George Griffin is a legend in Tech history and has been asso- ciated with athletics since 1920. He has been cross country coach since 1930. Bo Hagan joined the staff in September, 1951. He is now head Freshman coach. Whack Hyder is another Georgia Tech graduate who has returned to the school to aid in the athletic program. He is head basketball coach. BOBBY DODD, the third Head Football Coach in Georgia Fred Lanoue, a graduate of Springfield College, came to Tech via Tech history, has completed his ninth season as the Yellow the Atlanta Athletic Association to lead the swimmers. GREENBERG* INTRODUCTION College coaches are some of the highest of profile employees at any college or university. In many instances the pay that they receive outdis- tances the pay of the university's chancellor or most esteemed professor. Their athletic accomplishments receive more notoriety and media atten- tion than the most celebrated lab discovery of the university's science department. For many coaches the job can be characterized as "24-7" due to the exponential growth in their responsibilities beyond con- ducting practices, teaching and coaching. And what a job - every coaching moment is surrounded by stress, and every decision, whether on or off the court, is subject to second-guessing and scrutiny and is the subject of an often vicious public debate. Moreover, a coach's job secur- ity is often conditioned on winning because wins are the equivalent of the bottom line, putting fans in the stands, bolstering alumni contribu- tions, warranting lucrative TV and cable contracts, and persuading re- cruits to accept scholarship offers.

With this issue of The College Football Historian our seventh season of monthly of recalling games and accomplishments of players, teams and accomplishments. The old cliché says: It seems like yesterday…while it has been a number of ‘yesterdays’, it has been quite a ride each month finding or receiving content…then to organize it to see how and where it would be best suited on each page. A special thank you goes to each of other subscribers who receive TCFH each month…this issue will go to a record 563 men and women who share in the interest in preserving college football. One new feature for this year, will not take place until the season is in progress: under the heading of In-Season History. Many times, a coach, player or team would eclipse a mark during the season…and outside of his local area, very few people would know of it. This would be especially true of feats from non-BSD teams.
