October 1, 2016 vern o r Dear Film Enthusiasts,

Welcome to the 2016 Rehoboth Beach Independent Film Festival! Delaware’s oldest and largest film festival is celebrating its 19th anniversary this year. I would like to congratulate the Rehoboth Beach Film Society on this accomplishment, and I am he G o t he proud that the Department of State, Delaware Division of the Arts is once again supporting this exceptional mid-Atlantic film event.

This great combination of American and international documentaries, full length and short films joined with opportunities to converse with celebrities, and family friendly entertainment is what makes this event so special. This year, the Cinema Art Theater, a professionally equipped venue with 104 tiered and staggered seats, was opened in March by the Rehoboth Beach Film Society to serve as the main home of the festival. m f r o m o rd The theater is the new home for independent films in Sussex County.

Whether you are a Delaware native or a visitor with us, I know you will be entertained A W A and enriched by this outstanding cultural event!

Sincerely,

Jack A. Markell

Welcome to the Rehoboth Beach Independent Film Festival produced by the Rehoboth Beach Film Society (RBFS). When the Festival first started in 1998, it was primarily a means to extend the tourist season to the coastal region of Sussex County. Since then, the Festival has attracted thousands of WELCOME participants and has become one of the most acclaimed film festival events of the mid-Atlantic region. Annually, FROM THE audiences are able to enjoy a diverse selection of American BOARD and international features, documentaries, and short films. PRESIDENT As part of our commitment to providing you with an excellent experience each year, the Festival continues to evolve. This year, the Film Festival’s 19th anniversary, online ticket sales will be even more convenient, you will be able to see more films during the weekdays, and the venues will have better projection equipment. We are confident that you will enjoy this one like you have enjoyed our previous Festivals. This year has been one of many changes for the RBFS and our local community as we have opened the Cinema Art Theater. Independent films are now being screened year-round and new mini-festivals are happening as well. This feat would never have occurred had it not been for the generosity extended to the RBFS by foundations, rd Pre si den t rd B oa t he businesses, and, most importantly, our members. Thank you!! On behalf of the committed Board of Directors, our Executive Director, the seasoned and professional RBFS staff, Festival Sponsors, loyal and generous RBFS members, future members, and faithful volunteers, I welcome you to the 2016 Rehoboth Beach Independent Film Festival and sincerely thank you for your continued support. Here’s looking forward to great films at the 2016 Festival AND throughout the year at the Cinema Art Theater! Sincerely, Allen L. Stafford

FESTIVAL HEADLINER CERTAIN WOMEN Michelle Williams, Kristen Stewart and Laura Dern portray three women striving to forge their own paths amidst the wide-open plains of the American Northwest: a lawyer (Dern) who finds herself contending with both office sexism and a hostage situation; a wife and mother (Williams) whose determination to build her dream home puts her at odds with the men in her life; and a young law student (Stewart) who forms an ambiguous bond with a lonely ranch hand. As their stories intersect, a portrait emerges of flawed, but strong-willed individuals in the process of defining themselves. [Dir. That death sets into motion events that will change lives forever, including the young man’s mother Marie-France (Nathalie Baye), who cannot recover from the trauma. Nine years later, Marie-France takes a job as Thomas’ secretary without him knowing about her connection to his past. As Marie-France’s maternal rage reaches tragic proportions, she insinuates herself into his life, in this classic thriller à la Hitchcock. [Dirs. THE BRAND NEW TESTAMENT This story begins with one simple conceit: God exists! He lives in Brussels and he’s a real bastard, a petty tyrant to his wife and daughter. His son is known well; JC managed to escape his father’s grasp and live among us, getting himself killed in the process. But God has a daughter, too. Ea is ten years old and has had enough of her father using humanity as his playthings. When she spies the right opportunity, she hacks into his computer and leaks to the entire world via text message their inevitable date of death. Witty and eccentric. [Dir. With ratings in the cellar, the station manager issues a mandate to deliver more exploitative stories, a directive firmly at odds with Christine’s serious brand of issue-based journalism. To accomplish her goals, she must overcome her self-doubt and give the people what they want. [Dir. Antonio Campos, 2015, USA, 115 minutes.]

PARIS LOVE CUT Arnaud, a movie director is the typical Parisian guy: charming, distracted, unsettled. As he struggles to attract investors for his movie, his fiancée asks him to commit more to their relationship. At the same time, he falls in love with a young, ambitious actress and his mother passes away, leading to a turning point in Arnaud’s life. Somewhere between the sardonic humor of Woody Allen and the wry tenderness of Nanni Moretti, Arnaud Viard’s new film uses comedy and romance to depict a man’s crusade to understand his personal feelings about love and life.
