They then begin to draw recognizable pictures and imitate writing with squiggles. Eventually these squiggles become letter-like forms or the letters of a child’s name. Then children begin to match some sounds and letters and may use one beginning letter to write a word. The next step is writing beginning and ending consonants to represent a word. There are no spaces between words at this stage. Eventually children will begin to use some vowels in their spelling and will spell some high-frequency words such as the or and correctly. They may also begin spacing between words. As you look at the writing of our class, you will see that we are on our way to conventional writing. 3Alexis Spinetta2 Ashtales 2013 Page 4 of 168 Moyer “My Dad was working in his office.” “I played in a bouncy house.” By Anna Bayliff-Delgado By Alexandra Estrada “I played with Daddy.” “Dad Neil Ice Cream.” By Eddy Ider By Neil Bensaid 4 “This is my dad and my sister. In a Montessori classroom, the first step to writing is learning words are made up of different sounds. The mental skills of writing are developed first. The Moveable Alphabet is used to help develop the mental skills of writing; analyzing words by component sounds and using the cut out letters, to make words. The words are arranged phonetically and the focus is on communication. To avoid inhibiting the child’s desire and enthusiasm to make words, spelling is not corrected. The teaching of correct spelling comes at a later age. The child learns how to make simple words first (i.e., cat, hat, mat). As the child’s skill and confidence grows he/she is encouraged to write phrases and stories with the Moveable Alphabet. Here are some stories from children who are at this writing stage followed by stories written directly onto paper.
