Children begin their writing development by scribbling. They then begin to draw recognizable pictures and imitate writing with squiggles. Eventually these squiggles become letter-like forms or the letters of a child’s name. Then children begin to match some sounds and letters and may use one beginning letter to write a word. The next step is writing beginning and ending consonants to represent a word. There are no spaces between words at this stage. Eventually children will begin to use some vowels in their spelling and will spell some high-frequency words such as the or and correctly. They may also begin spacing between words. As you look at the writing of our class, you will see that we are on our way to conventional writing.

It is important to note the mental and manual (paper and pencil) skills of writing are separate. In a Montessori classroom, the first step to writing is learning words are made up of different sounds. The mental skills of writing are developed first. The Moveable Alphabet is used to help develop the mental skills of writing; analyzing words by component sounds and using the cut out letters, to make words. The words are arranged phonetically and the focus is on communication. To avoid inhibiting the child’s desire and enthusiasm to make words, spelling is not corrected. The teaching of correct spelling comes at a later age. The child learns how to make simple words first (i.e., cat, hat, mat). As the child’s skill and confidence grows he/she is encouraged to write phrases and stories with the Moveable Alphabet. Here are some stories from children who are at this writing stage followed by stories written directly onto paper.

HUMMINGBIRDS, RATS, DUCKS AND PIGS

There are a few animals that I have been reading about. I learned new things and I have found them to be cool. Hummingbirds are one of the animals. Hummingbirds sometime try to drink out of stop signs because they are bright. They fly like a helicopter. They will fight an eagle to save their baby. I think the hummingbird is cool, how about you? Rats! Keep rats out of your home! Keep pet bowls inside and keep windows all shut. Make sure the bird feeders are high and keep all trash in trash cans. Ducks are cool because they can be pets! They can be annoying, but ducks can be funny too! Ask your neighbors about getting a duck as a pet. Some people like ducks and some people do not. Pigs are not lazy and stupid. Pigs are actually very smart. They are important because of their meat. We can eat pigs. They live all over the world. I think that’s what makes them so cool. Finally, the last cool animal is ants. You might think that ants are small and weak, but they are not. They are strong. The queen ant can lay eggs, but the babies can be turned into slaves if they are stolen. Ants have their own smell and the queen knows the smell.

BEYBLADES Beyblades are a kind of spinning top. They are based on a TV show that was first shown in Japan. Beyblades have a launcher and a rip cord to make them spin. They spin in a small, medium, or large stadium. People battle their Beyblades against other Beyblades in the stadium. The last Beyblade that is left still spinning wins. There are a lot of types of Beyblades. There are water types, tornado types, fire types, rock types, air types, and others. They have different parts. The performance tip can be an Attack Tip, a Defense Tip, a Stamina Tip, or a Balance Tip. The spin track makes the Beyblade higher or shorter, but some spin tracks have special parts. The fusion wheel makes the most contact with other Beyblades. The energy ring is the part that's held by the launcher, and it can help the Beyblade spin in different ways. The face bolt holds all the parts together. There are different launchers. There are lightning launchers, string launchers, and rip cord launchers, but lightning and string launchers are stronger, because they make the Beyblade spin faster. There are lots of stadiums, and some have a little round piece in the middle that spins and can make it harder for the Beyblade to get out of the middle of the stadium. Beyblades have their own different strengths. People can choose from Beyblades like Pegasus, Rock Leone, Scythe Kronos, Variares, and Jade Jupiter, and others. Scythe Kronos can make a vortex of air and can spin a long time even if it does not have much power left, because of its performance tip. Jade Jupiter has a fusion wheel that has four shields that help it balance on the sides, and protect it. Jade Jupiter also has a small, round performance tip that is good because of its stability. Variares also has a performance tip with awesome stability. Flame Sagittario is a stamina type just like Flame Libra. Flame Sagittario has a spin track that has claws on it to strike other Beyblades underneath. Its claws point out when spinning, and they stay that way the whole battle. This gives Flame Sagittario a good defense and offense. Rock Leone has a special part on its spin track that makes a wall of air around it. Cosmic Pegasus has a performance tip that is rubber and can attach to the walls of the stadium, but it does this only once in a while. Flame Libra has a sharp performance tip that lets it spin for a very long time. Aries is a rare Beyblade. Almost all players like Aries. Dark Bull is a balance type of Beyblade, just like Dark Wolf, but Dark Wolf has a flat performance tip and Dark Bull has a sharper performance tip. Storm Pegasus is an Attack Type and has a flat, rubber performance tip. There are different strategies you can use when playing. For example, if you switch the pieces on your Beyblade, that can help you or hurt you. If you have a very tall spin track and switch to a tall performance tip on your Beyblade, it can lead to your defeat. This is because you will leave these parts unguarded, and they can be hit by the fusion wheel on another Beyblade that has not been changed to have tall pieces. By Dorian Anthopolos

THE ADVENTURES OF FELIX There once was a hotdog named Felix. Felix lived near a beach. “Aahh!” he cried. People were grilling him. Then, they put him in a bun. When no one was looking, he quickly rolled away. He went towards the ocean quickly to cool down from all that grilling. But, Felix was in the water too long and ocean pulled him out to sea.

“Aaahh! Where am I going,” he wondered. After some time he landed in an interesting place, one he had never seen before. There he spotted a hamburger. He went to the hamburger and asked, “Where am I?” The hamburger said he was in a forest. “Hi, my name is Will. The forest is a very spooky place so be so be careful.” “But what about you?” Felix questioned. “Well, I have been here for a long time. But, I am still frightened of the forest. So, who are you?” Will asked. “My name is Felix.” Felix replied. Suddenly, a large hawk swept in and grabbed Will with its claws. “Help, me! Help me Felix!” As Will disappeared in the sky Felix started to panic. “What am I going to do? My friend is in danger. I have to help him but what should I do? Will told me the forest is spooky. No, I must help my friend!” Felix began to create a plan. Felix made weapons; arrows made from sticks and a rock, rocks to throw, and rope from bits of string. Felix felt really prepared so, he began sprinting in the direction he saw Will taken. He saw a baby bear, but he wasn’t fooled by how cute it was. He knew it would attack him. So, he grabbed arrows and started aiming them but they didn’t work! So, Felix brought out the rocks and kept throwing them until the baby bear crawled away. Then, he saw a huge mountain. On top of it, Felix saw Will all by himself. “Don’t worry, I am coming.” Felix cried. Felix grabbed the rope and began climbing. The mountain was so huge it took Felix three days to climb it. When he reached the top he saw Will lying down. “Wake up Will.” Felix cried. Will woke up gradually. Then, his eyes widen. “You’re the bravest hot dog I have ever seen. In the beginning, you were scared and now you are brave!” Will said happily. Felix was really proud of himself. Together they returned to the beach where Felix and Will lived a happy life. Minecraftia: The Very Painful Adventures of Steve

One day Steve logged onto Minecraft in single player mode. Once Steve spawned he was in the middle of a giant desert, then he remembered to put the settings on large biomes. He felt so dumb! Steve started sprinting around. He ran for twenty minutes until he found an oasis with four trees. It was night so Steve decided to build a house. Steve cut down two trees and got no saplings! He realized he only had two trees left! It was three hours after Steve had built his house (which would mean it was midnight) so he went inside to wait for morning but he did not have any torches!

Steve had to wait until the morning to get coal for the torches. He waited and waited, and then he realized something very important. Always, and I mean always, have something fun to do while you are waiting. About thirty minutes after waiting for the night to end, a zombie spawned in Steve’s house! Steve destroyed the zombie. Then Steve crafted a wooden sword and went outside to kill a zombie he heard. A creeper snuck up on Steve and exploded. Steve died. Steve was so mad he almost deleted his world! But he did not. All the mobs (monsters) were relieved. Steve re-spawned. It was daytime but Steve was still in the desert! Frustrated, Steve went to the main menu and made a new world. When he entered this new world he found he was in a desert biome again! But there was a forest and a sand temple nearby. Steve went in the sand temple, but he fell in a trap and heard a ‘sss’... BOOM! Steve blew up! Steve was really mad now so he switched to creative mode. “Cheater!” a guy said in the background. Steve placed one hundred million blocks of TNT in his world and blew it up with a lever. It blew up half of his whole world! He flew a long distance away from the explosion so he would not lag out. After five hours of hearing explosion noises Steve made an end portal, because he was bored. Steve made full diamond armor and went through the portal. He saw the Enderdragon. Steve turned on survival mode and Enderdragon swooped down on Steve. Steve could not do anything because he had lagged out. By Jimmy Bastos

There were a lot of crows that were cawing really loud, not a regular cry but a “get lost” kind of cry. Then, we saw a lot of little birds dive bombing the owl. Those mama birds were very angry that the owl was getting too close to their nests. They were worried because owls eat baby birds. On the same walk, we saw three red cardinals, a vulture and a blue-jay. So if you want to see lots of birds in the wild, just take a hike and use your ears, eyes, and binoculars to get a closer look. COLONIAL GLASSBLOWER It was 1755 twelve o'clock noon in Jamestown as Mr. Height, one of our richest consumers, walked in and ordered one dozen jars as I was sweeping the glasshouse. "I'll get right on it," my master said. As Mr. Height walked out I asked my master when I would be as good as him. My master 70 answered, “Not for many years”. Those years have come and gone and this is what I learned. Now my job in the glasshouse is a rod blower. I always thought this was the best job in the glasshouse and I was right. I work with many men in close dangerous conditions. I work with other 70 Liam McBride glass blowers, the gaffer, and apprentices.

WHAT I DID WITH MY BUDDY My favorite part of the trip to Costa Rica was when we were with our buddies. My buddy’s name was Valeria. ASHLAWN: MY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL! I am going to miss Ashlawn so much. I have been here for six awesome years. Out of many things, I will miss the specials; art, music, Spanish, and P.E. I like specials because they involve more than just reading and writing. We do different activities, like drawing. I will also miss my teachers. Since I have been here for six awesome years, I have seen many teachers with different personalities. Despite their differences they have all supported me, a lot. I was nervous the first day at Ashlawn, but I told myself “this will be great!” It’s hard to believe I have been here so long but have not met everyone! My resolution is to try to meet everyone before the school year ends!! The last thing I am thankful for is being on the “Wall of character” four times. COSTA RICA

My favorite memory of Ashlawn was when I went to Costa Rica. Only 22 kids from Ashlawn and four from Nottingham got to go. My two favorite parts of the trip were the Montana de Fuego Hotel and the Lincoln School. Personally, I think the worst part was leaving all of my new friends that I made. I loved the Montana de Fuego Hotel because it is where we did my favorite activities; the canopy tour and the hot springs. I enjoyed the Lincoln School because I got to meet so many Costa Ricans. I also really liked the school itself because it was so big. I loved Costa Rica and I was so sad when 101 I had to leave. I can’t wait to go again with my family. During these adventures my group was gifted with amazing chaperones; Ms. Power, Mrs. Ellis, Mrs. and Mr. Musto, and Mrs. McCoy. For the second half of the week I was very lucky to stay with the Mora family. Sadly mid-way through my trip to this beautiful country I came down with a fever, and later I would find out that I had laryngitis. But with the help of Milena Mora, the mom of my exchange student, and all the chaperones I managed to stay healthy and still have an amazing time. When I arrived at my exchange student’s, (Lucy) house I got to meet her four dogs, Lela, Cookie, Borona, and Chispita. On the weekend they took me to a hotel on the Pacific Ocean where I got the chance to get very close to some monkeys and a 104 toucan. I had an amazing time in this country and I recommend this trip to every future fifth grader. By Brooke Weiser
