375 Poster Session I, Event Center – The Snowbird Center, Friday 26 July 2019 Maria Sabando1, Yannis Papastamatiou1, Guillaume Rieucau2, Darcy Bradley3, Jennifer Caselle3 1Florida International University, Miami, FL, USA, 2Louisiana Universities Marine Consortium, Chauvin, LA, USA, 3University of California, Santa Barbara, Santa Barbara, CA, USA Reef Shark Behavioral Interactions are Habitat Specific Dominance hierarchies and competitive behaviors have been studied in several species of animals that includes mammals, birds, amphibians, and fish. Competition and distribution model predictions vary based on dominance hierarchies, but most assume differences in dominance are constant across habitats. More recent evidence suggests dominance and competitive advantages may vary based on habitat. We quantified dominance interactions between two species of sharks Carcharhinus amblyrhynchos and Carcharhinus melanopterus, across two different habitats, fore reef and back reef, at a remote Pacific atoll. We used Baited Remote Underwater Video (BRUV) to observe dominance behaviors and quantified the number of aggressive interactions or bites to the BRUVs from either species, both separately and in the presence of one another. Blacktip reef sharks were the most abundant species in either habitat, and there was significant negative correlation between their relative abundance, bites on BRUVs, and the number of grey reef sharks. Although this trend was found in both habitats, the decline in blacktip abundance with grey reef shark presence was far more pronounced in fore reef habitats. We show that the presence of one shark species may limit the feeding opportunities of another, but the extent of this relationship is habitat specific. Future competition models should consider habitat-specific dominance or competitive interactions. -

Zoological Studies 33(1): 44-64. A total of 42 species belonging to 9 genera and 2 subfamilies of the family Muraenidae are indigenous to Taiwan. The 12 species: Enchelycore bikiniensis, Gymnothorax brunneus, G. javanicus, G_ margaritophorus, G. melatremus, G. nudivomer, G. reevesii, G. zonipectis, Strophidon sathete, Uropterygius macrocephalus, U. micropterus, and U. tigrinus are first reported in this paper. The 7 species: Enchelycore lichenosa, E. schismatorhynchus, Gymnothorax buroensis, G. hepaticus, G. meleagris, G. richardsoni and Siderea thyrsoidea whose Taiwan existence was doubted or lacked specimens in the past are also recorded. Additionly, many species misidentifications or improper use of junior synonyms in previously literature stand corrected in this paper. Two previously recorded species Gymnothorax monostigmus and G. polyuranodon are, lacking Taiwan specimens, excluded. Color photographs, dentition patterns, synopsis, key, diagnosis, and remarks for all 42 species are provided in this paper. Key words: Moray eels, Fish taxonomy, Fish fauna, Anguilliformes. <I>Uropterygius</I> (Anguilliformes: Muraenidae)
BULLETIN OF MARINE SCIENCE. 60(3): 1005-1014, 1997 TWO NEW INDO-PACIFIC MORAYS OF THE GENUS UROPTERYGIUS (ANGUILLIFORMES: MURAENIDAE) John E. McCosker and David G. Smith ABSTRACT Two closely-related new species of Indo-Pacific morays are described herein. Urop- lerygius xenodonlus, from the central and western Pacific, and U. golanii, from the north- ern Red Sea, differ from each other in their vertebral numbers, and from all other con- geners which possess a single branchial pore on the basis of their coloration, vertebral number, and dentition. The possession by the new species of wedge-shaped rather than conical jaw teeth within species of Uroplerygius as well as the relationship of vomerine dentition to fish size are discussed. The nearly finless species of the cosmopolitan moray genus Uropterygius Rtippell (1838) all share a distinctive combination of characters. They, and the two species of the closely related genus Scuticaria Jordan and Snyder (1901) and the species of Anarchias Jordan and Starks (in Jordan and Seale, 1906), are easily distinguished by their possession of numerous conical teeth and the restriction of their median fins to the posterior tail region. We recently each received specimens of a curious species of Uropterygius from the Red Sea. The jaw dentition, nearly wedge-shaped rather than conical, was unlike that of any Uropterygius with which we were familiar. We found them to be a new species but were stymied by their nearly complete Uropterygius-like facies but distinctly different dentition. A more extensive search for additional specimens and an evaluation of the dentition within the genus resulted in the discovery of yet another closely related and undescribed species, as well as a better understanding of the range of dentition within Uropterygius. -

Indian Ocean) MURAENIDAE Morays Robust, powerful eels, their body firm, muscular and somewhat compressed along the tail. Typically, the dorsal profile above and behind the eye is steep due to the development of strong head muscles; anterior nostrils tubular at front of snout, posterior nostrils above anterior portion of eye, usually as a simple hole with a raised rim, but sometimes tubular; teeth in jaws usually strong, ranging from sharply pointed and depressible canines to blunt molars; teeth on vomer (roof of mouth) uniserial or in a median multiserial patch; each gill opening restricted to a small, roundish, lateral hole or slit. No spines in fins; vertical fins variously developed, from dorsal fin originating on head and anal fin immediately behind anus, to both fins restricted to tail tip; pectoral and pelvic fins absent. No scales. No lateral line pores on body, but a reduced complement of lateral line pores on head, including typically 1 or 2 above and before gill opening (bronchial lateral line pores). Colour: highly variable; sometimes plain creamish, greyish, brownish, purplish or blackish, with minor other markings, but more often with very distinctive and characteristic patterns of marblings, blotches or bands. Colour patterns may change considerably with age. Small to very large fishes (to over 400 cm in total length) inhabiting essentially shallow waters in tropical areas, although a few species have invaded rather deep water (over 200 m) and some others occur in temperate areas. Morays are most abundant on reefs or in rocky areas where they find protection in holes and crevices. -

RAND ALL^ ABSTRACT A total of 348 species of marine fishes are recorded from the four Pitcairn Islands in southeastern Oceania: Pitcairn, Henderson, and the atolls Oeno and Ducie. Nearly all of the species listed are from collections made by the author and associates in 1970-71 and deposited in the Bernice P. Bishop Museum, Honolulu. Thirty-three of these were new species when they were collected but have since been described. Twenty-six species are listed only by genus, 15 of which appear to be undescribed and are under study; the remaining 11 are unidentified. Five species of fishes are presently known only from the Pitcairn Islands: Sargocentron megalops, Hemitaurichthys multispinosus, Ammodytes sp., Enneapterygius ornatus, and Alticus sp. Of the 335 species from the Pitcairn Islands that are shore fishes (the other 13 being regarded as pelagic), 284 are tropical species that are wide-ranging in the central and western Pacific, many of which extend their distribution into the Indian Ocean. Thirty-six of the Pitcairn fishes occur only in the Southern Hemisphere south of latitude 14' S; 21 of these are found only south of 20"s. -
