Project Kalusugan (Good Health) was founded in 1992 to organize a coalition and conduct a health needs assessment of FilAms in SD. Two other founders were the Council of Philip- pine American Organizations (COPAO) and Operation Samahan (OS). The aim was to implement programs to reduce the health disparity between minority groups and mainstream population. The coalition was successful in mobiliz- ing the community and conducting assessment. Thus, it was incorporated as a 501(c) 3 in 1995 and changed its name to KCS. Since then it has grown in programs, staff and budget from $50,000 to more than 4.5 million in 17 years. It has implemented programs to reduce risk of cancer, heart disease, stroke, and diabetes, the major killers of FilAms, through improved nutrition and increased physical activity. It also conducted programs to prevent mental health problems of youth i.e., gang vio- lence, suicide, substance abuse, teenage pregnancy and school-dropouts through parent youth workshops and community activities.

Dr. Dirige graduated with a B.S. degree in Nutrition and Dietetics from the University of the Philippines (UP). She was a college and university scholar during her schooling at UP. She came to the U.S. as an East-West Center scholar studying at the University of Hawaii working on her MS in Nutrition.
