In constructing the percept of transparency, the visual system must decompose the light intensity at each image location into two componentsöone for the partially transmissive surface, the other for the underlying surface seen through it. Theories of perceptual transparency have typically assumed that this decomposition is defined quantitatively in terms of the inverse of some physical model (typically, Metelli's `episcotister model'). In previous work, we demon- strated that the visual system uses Michelson contrast as a critical image variable in assigning transmittance to transparent surfacesönot luminance differences as predicted by Metelli's model [F Metelli, 1974 Scientific American 230(4) 90 ^ 98]. In this paper, we study the contribution of another variable in determining perceived transmittance, namely, the image blur introduced by the light-scattering properties of translucent surfaces and materials. Experiment 1 demonstrates that increasing the degree of blur in the region of transparency leads to a lowering in perceived transmittance, even if Michelson contrast remains constant in this region. Experiment 2 tests how this addition of blur affects apparent contrast in the absence of perceived transparency. The results demonstrate that, although introducing blur leads to a lowering in apparent contrast, the magnitude of this decrease is relatively small, and not sufficient to explain the decrease in perceived transmittance observed in experiment 1. -

PSYCHOLOGY Psychology & Neuroscience, 2009, 2, 1, 11 - 15 NEUROSCIENCE DOI: 10.3922/j.psns.2009.1.03 Contrast sensitivity function of sine-wave gratings in children with acute malnutrition Natanael Antonio dos Santos, Caroline Costa Gomes Alencar and Yuri Henrique Nunes Dias Universidade Federal da Paraíba, Brazil Abstract The aim of this study was to determine the contrast sensitivity curves of sine-wave gratings with spatial frequencies of 0.25, 1.0, 2.0 and 8.0 cycles per degree (cpd) of visual angle in 16 female subjects aged 7 to 9 years old, eight well-nourished and eight with acute protein-energy malnutrition (PEM). All participants had normal visual acuity and were free of identifiable ocular illness. Contrast threshold was measured using a temporal two-alternative forced-choice psychophysical method, at a distance of 150 cm of the stimuli, binocularly, with mean luminance of 40.1 cd/m2. We detected a general decline in contrast sensitivity for children with acute malnutrition at all spatial frequencies compared to well-nourished children. The malnourished group needed in average 1.37 times more contrast to detect the stimulus in comparison with the well-nourished one. Differences between the groups were statistically significant at all spatial frequencies (p < .001). These results suggest that acute PEM changes the visual perception for sine-wave gratings.Keywords: visual perception, contrast sensitivity, spatial frequency, malnourished children, psychophysical method. COMERFORD York University. 4700 Keele Street, Downsview, Ontario, Canada This paper describes a simple method of projecting Mach bands, color mixtures, and variable-contrast sinusoidal gratings. The standard method of displaying a grating with a sinusoidal luminance profile is on an oscilloscope screen (Campbell & Green, 1965; Schade, 1956). This method is useful and versatile, but the luminance is usually well below 100 cd/rn'' because the tube phosphor is apt to burn out and the size of the display is limited to the size of the tube face. It is possible to project an enlarged image 0 f the tube face onto a ground-glass back-projection screen, using the projection lens from a slide projector, but this further reduces the available luminance. Display oscilloscopes with 19-in. screens are available! but basically these are modified television monitors with magnetic deflection coils. Magnetic deflection has an inherently lower bandwidth than the electrostatic deflection used on ordinary small-screen oscilloscopes, and this can lead to flicker problems. Also they are not cheap. Large bright gratings of about 250 cd/rn? can be projected onto a screen for classroom display very cheaply, using an ordinary overhead projector.
