Some thermostat settings are centrally operated by the Public Works Department with indoor temperatures between 66 and 78 degrees. Individual room thermostats should be set no higher than 78 degrees per DoD and Navy regulations. Housekeeping Services. Housekeeping services are provided 7 days a week. Linens are changed upon request or every 7th day. Amenities and bed/bath linens are available upon request.

DISASTER PROCEDURES

Evacuation Planning: Advance planning is imperative to ensure the safety of our guests. When disaster conditions exist, an evacuation order may be called during Condition of Readiness (COR). The goal is evacuate early to locate safe lodging accommodations outside the affected area. NGIS guests will be directed to vacate to a designated building. If you must prepare to evacuate, you should do the following: - Secure your room. - Disconnect electrical appliances. - If you have to leave your room - Do not walk through moving water. Hurricane: A tropical storm, which has intensified to 75 mph and has high tides, strong winds, and heavy rainfall. There are 5 categories of hurricane intensity. Evacuation Routes: Evacuation route is located on the back of your door Earthquake: If you are indoors when shaking starts: - “DROP, COVER AND HOLD ON.” If you are not near a strong table or desk, drop to the floor against an interior wall and cover your head and neck with your arms. - Avoid windows, hanging objects, mirrors, tall furniture, large appliances and cabinets filled with heavy objects. - Do not try to run out of the structure during strong shaking. If you are in bed, stay there and cover your head with a pillow. - Do not use elevators. If you use a wheelchair, lock the wheels and cover your head. Tornadoes: Go to the lowest building level. If there is no basement, go to the center of a small interior room on the lowest level (closet, interior hallway) away from corners, windows, doors, and outside walls. Put as many walls as possible between you and the outside. Get under a sturdy table and use your arms to protect your head and neck. Watch out for flying debris. Flying debris from tornadoes causes most fatalities and injuries. Check for injuries. Do not attempt to move seriously injured people unless they are in immediate danger of further injury. Get medical assistance immediately. If someone has stopped breathing, begin CPR if you are trained to do so. Stop a bleeding injury by applying direct pressure to the wound. Have any puncture wound evaluated by a physician. If you are trapped, try to attract attention to your location. Flash Flooding: Flash floods can occur within a few minutes or hours of excessive rainfall, a dam, or levee failure. Listen to the radio or television for information. Be aware that flash flooding can occur. If there is any possibility of a flash flood, move immediately to higher ground. Do not wait for instructions to move. Be aware of stream, drainage channels, canyons and other areas known to flood suddenly. Flash floods can occur in these areas with or without typical warnings such as rain clouds or heavy rain.

Places of Interest THE OLD TOWN: Around the Venetian Harbor are some of the island's most picturesque homes and buildings from the 13th c. Venetian era, giving the town its special atmosphere. The scenic lighthouse affords a beautiful view of the area, and the Old Town is the center of social life in Chania! THE OUTER HARBOR: At the far end of the Harbor is the Firkas Fortress, which served as a fort residence and barracks during the Venetian occupation and as a barracks and prison when the Turks invaded. Today it houses the Naval Museum. THE ARCHEOLOGICAL MUSEUM: Next to the Roman Catholic Church, at Halidon Street, is the Archaeological Museum of Chania. This building was the magnificent Venetian church of San Francesco. A visit is worthwhile in order to see the inside of the former church and its garden. There are some very interesting local artifacts from the Minoan, the Hellenistic and Roman eras. The contents of the museum exhibits were discovered locally and follow a chronological order of presentation, beginning with Neolithic artifacts. The exhibits are well-labeled in Greek and English and there is a brief explanation as to their importance and where they were found. Also displayed are two clay tablets inscribed in Linear A and Linear B script. Except for the tablets discovered at Knossos. These tablets excavated in Kastelli are the only examples of the two scripts being found together. DIKASTIKON MEGARON ("DIKASTIRIA/COURT HALL): There is a statue of Eleftherios Venizelos in the middle of the square in front of the splendid nineteenth century Court House building (Dikastiko Megaron), originally built to be a hospital. Around the square with the beautiful gardens you will find many grill houses and restaurants. THE NAVAL MUSEUM: The Firkas Bastion is at the western end of the outer harbor. It now houses the Naval Museum. The Venetians used it as a prison for Greeks condemned to death. Eleftherios Venizelos and King Constantine officially raised the Greek flag here in 1913. During the summer months, the Firkas is host to a local Cretan dance group that gives public performances. Plays and concerts are also performed here. AGIA TRIADA MONASTERY: The monastery of Agia Triada (Holy Trinity) in Akrotiri was built in the seventeenth century by two brothers of the Venetian Zangaroli family - monks who had converted to the Orthodox faith. It was built on top of a pre-existing church. The church itself is of Byzantine cruciform architecture with three domes. The monastery was an important theological school in the nineteenth century. GOUVERNETO MONASTERY: Gouverneto in Akrotiri is one of the oldest monasteries in Crete, dating back to around 1537. The monastery has the form of a fortress with towers at each end. Strong Venetian influences are visible throughout. The main church of Gouverneto is dedicated to the Presentation of the Virgin. The church has a vaulted ceiling and turrets at each of the corners for guns and bows. Fine Venetian carvings decorate the facade of the beautiful church. The patron saint of the smaller chapel is St. John the Hermit, founder of the monastery. KATHOLIKO MONASTERY The Katholiko Monastery is the most ancient monastery on Crete, dating back to the eleventh century. The monastery became a place of formal worship in the thirteenth century. The caves of the rocky ravine sheltered the monks, who dedicated their lives to fasting and prayer.
