In addition, apologies are extended for the necessity of reducing to a uniform size the many photographs which were requested and supplied by the early members. Unfortunately, a small number of the personal photographs supplied by the early members were technically unre• producible for various reasons. Despite these shortcomings, the PILOT editors hope the membership will enjoy hearing from and about the remaining first 1,001 as much as the AOPA staff has. S. “Slim” Lindsay “Quiet Birdmen” Book was donated to the Wright State University Special Collections and Archives by Priscilla “Percy” Webb on June 13, 2007. Percy Webb is the daughter of Mr. Lindsay. The collection consists of one leather-bound book, dated May 1, 1936, housed in one clamshell Hollinger box spanning 1 linear foot. The Quiet Birdmen Book contains 640 photographs of “Quiet Birdmen” members displayed on 160 pages. Included in the book are photographs of such pilots as H.H. “Jimmie” Doolittle, E. E. “Pop” Cleveland, Roscoe Turner, Walter R. Brookins, Wiley Post, E.V. “Eddie” Rickenbacker, and C.A. “Slim” Lindbergh. In October 2007, a small addition was added to the collection consisting of several photographs and biographical information about Mr. Lindsay. There are no restrictions on the use of the book. Biographical Sketch There is no information concerning the date of Mr. K. S. “Slim” Lindsay’s birth or his family. According to information received from his daughter, he died in 1979 in Tremblant, Canada. Mr. Lindsay’s early career was primarily as a salesman. From December 1919 until May 1924, he owned and operated an automobile business in Northboro, Massachusetts. He 1922 he learned to fly and obtained a pilot’s license from the State of Massachusetts in September 1924. From 1924 until April 1928, he was employed as a salesman for a variety of companies including General Electric, Sprague Electrical Supplies, and the Clapp Rose and Vaughn Company.

    The Chronological, Biographical & Historical Story of 'Edward Albert Johnson' including the history of the 'Al Johnson Flying Field' in Vandalia, Ohio. 19 2 6 -1 9 34 • Edward Albert Johnson was born on January 14th, 1885 in Newport, Rhode Island. • Father : Christian Frederick Johnson & Mother : Alice Anderson Johnson came to the United States from Copenhagen, Denmark in 1870 and settled in Rhode Island. • They moved to Oakland, California where Al received his public school education and the attended Polytechnic Business College in that city. • Al was president / owner of Motor Express & Drayage Company of Oakland from 1911 until 1915. • Al learned to fly and was trained at airfields in San Diego, California and Buffalo, New York where he studied flying under Walter Lees. • Edward Albert Johnson first soloed in 1915 and received Pilot License No. 32. • In 1915 Al became a representative of The Curtiss Aeroplane & Motor Company in England. • He returned to the U.S. in 1916 and was engaged as a civilian flight Instructor and test pilot for the Curtiss School / US. Army in Mineola, N.Y. and Ellington Field in Houston, Texas • Later in 1917, employed as a flight instructor at McCook Field in Dayton, Ohio, Al met Jimmie Johnson (no relation) and they became life long friends and business associates. Their work continued at McCook Field, under Washington Bureau of Military Aeronautics, Chief Colonel Thurman Blake until 1918. • In 1919, following the W.W.I , Al joined the U.S. Post Service, laying out 'Air Mail routes' from New York to Chicago. Al Johnson was one of the group of pilots who flew that momentous opening day route from New York to Chicago.
