A SPECtAL KIND OF WEDDING PRESENT Telfed's Bursaries and Scholarships Committee, which also encompasses bequests for good deeds beyond the confines of classroom or lecture-room, is a veritable treasure-house of stories of human /uuiiimnnin© pool/ kindness, mitzvot and appreciation. The best we can do to illustrate this is to relate, from time to time, the drama that generosity and kindness can aspire to. One such story is about the Nancy Glllls Memorial Fund — one of several Funds in memory of Nancy Gillis. The story starts with Ivlaud Gillis and her husband, Dr Kurt Gillis, whose only child, Nancy, died at the age of 11. Maud, a devout Jewess by choice, carried out her religious duties with fervour and deep devo tion. Her love of Judaism took on the deepest mean ing of Jewish values — the performance of mitzvot — and she and her husband set up the Nancy Gillis Memorial Fund as an avenue through which mitzvot could be performed. This particular Memorial Fund is used for one purpose, and one purpose only — to enable a young bride of indigent background to make a special wedding-present purchase. Every year since 1976, when the Fund was set up, a deserving bride has been selected in a fair and dis creet manner to be the recipient of a sum of money to BUILDING purchase something that would ordinarily be beyond REPAIRS h e r m e a n s . This year's bride is Rahel W. She was selected by "do it ydurself kit" Mrs Faiga Levin, a Jerusalem teacher, who with her husband, Rabbi Joseph Levin, Is vitally Involved in EQUIPMENT the welfare of less fortunate members of society. Rahel is the oldest of eleven children of a family with CHEMICALS a tragic background. The father died of cancer and the mother, having succumbed to all the pressures of ADVICE her husband's death, is now in a mental institution. Faiga involved several families in the vicinity to help the children by suppling food to maintain them at above breadline level. The children insisted that the food be brought into the home at night to spare them jhe indignity of being seen receiving charity. Eventually, the children were placed in foster homes. It was Faiga, too, who saw to all the arrangements for Rahel's marriage to Moshe, a young Russian im migrant who is a member of Zahal permanent force. The wedding took place in a development town in the north, not far from Safed, where Rahel has a jot) as a madricha. And so. the future for the young couple begins to look rosier. Rahel's choice of a wedding present? A Magimix, FOR FURTHER INFORMATION which she never, in her wildest dreams, thought she'd possess. Rahel was overwhelmed with the gift contact: and in a charming and touching letter expressed her deep gratitude to those who made this possible. LENNY HIRSCH C/D MAYBAR O S E - 5 5 S < 4 a WOTI!
