  • A Short Guide to Irish Science Fiction
A Short Guide to Irish Science Fiction Jack Fennell As part of the Dublin 2019 Bid, we run a weekly feature on our social media platforms since January 2015. Irish Fiction Friday showcases a piece of free Irish Science Fiction, Fantasy or Horror literature every week. During this, we contacted Jack Fennell, author of Irish Science Fiction, with an aim to featuring him as one of our weekly contributors. Instead, he gave us this wonderful bibliography of Irish Science Fiction to use as we saw fit. This booklet contains an in-depth list of Irish Science Fiction, details of publication and a short synopsis for each entry. It gives an idea of the breadth of science fiction literature, past and present. across a range of writers. It’s a wonderful introduction to Irish Science Fiction literature, and we very much hope you enjoy it. We’d like to thank Jack Fennell for his huge generosity and the time he has donated in putting this bibliography together. His book, Irish Science Fiction, is available from Liverpool University Press. http://liverpooluniversitypress.co.uk/products/60385 The cover is from Cathal Ó Sándair’s An Captaen Spéirling, Spás-Phíolóta (1961). Dissertations and Student Research in Entomology. 24. https://digitalcommons.unl.edu/entomologydiss/24 This Article is brought to you for free and open access by the Entomology, Department of at DigitalCommons@University of Nebraska - Lincoln. It has been accepted for inclusion in Dissertations and Student Research in Entomology by an authorized administrator of DigitalCommons@University of Nebraska - Lincoln. Master’s Project Proposal Insectography: Insects in the World of Fiction By Erin Bauer My proposed Master’s Project is to develop a comprehensive list of fictional works (films/TV episodes, video games, children’s books, and novels) originally published or produced in the United States between 1950 and 2012 about or including insects, spiders, related arthropods (many times anthropomorphized or mutated) and/or entomologists as main characters and playing a major role in the plot. Although the list will encompass both entertaining and educational works, it will not include textbooks or other non-fictional works. It will also not include “fictionalized” accounts of real processes. For example, a book such as Hope for the Flowers, where the story is told from the perspective of the main character, a caterpillar discovering its true nature through metamorphosis, or a book where an insect character learns the importance of friendship, would be included in this list.

  • JUMP WISH-LIST Rules/Notes: Settings
JUMP WISH-LIST Rules/Notes: ● This list is solely for settings that don’t have jumps made yet. ● No jumps you want to see redone, I’m not going to go down this path. If there is any such setting mentioned on list, then as soon as it is pointed out to me, I’ll remove it. ● Settings already claimed will be either removed from list or have claim noted. I’ll accept info about claims only from the jump-maker who claimed it. ● I hope to maintain this list in such way that /tg/, SB and QQ communities can all check it out. If you don’t like something on it, just ignore it. After all, if jump is being made doesn’t mean you have to use it. Furthermore, we all have different tastes, be mindful of that. ● Fanfics will be listed separately. Some people like the idea of such jumps, some don’t. I might end up removing this section altogether just because it is so difficult to decide if certain fanfic would be acceptable for being turned into jump or not. ● Settings will be listed alphabetically within a genre, by their official name. Any other names will be included after that one. Please include genre and medium with any suggestions (e.g. KultHorror - Tabletop RPG; The Culture - Science Fiction - Novel) ● Rule of thumb – recommend settings that you would want to visit in order to interact with characters and storylines, not in order to get specific perks/powers/items. Settings: 0-9 ● 100, The (SF - TV Series) ● 300 (movies) ● 3x3 Eyes (manga) ● 7th Heaven (TV series) ● 9 (movie) ● 100 Bullets (vertigo) ● 11eyes (VN/anime) ● 2 Broke Girls (TV Series)

The VINTAGE NINJA Movie & TV Guide VOL. 1: JAPAN, LIVE ACTION — 1920s-1980s © Keith J. Rainville, 2021 You want to see the movies Sho Kosugi grew up watching, the ones that inspired animation designers and video game artists of the 80s and 90s, the ones the James Bond people ripped off in the 60s, but where to start? Or, you’ve amassed a collection of these gems already but know there’s more out there. Here’s a user- friendly reference for both pursuits, with quick-and-easy recommendations for Japanese ninja titles from the silent era to the late 80s — their general flavor and tone, varying trends and tropes, and a lot of surprises. CONVENTIONS OF THIS GUIDE: • TITLES — for better or worse I’ve used the most commonly used translations out there. These are often the most accessible references to these films so, even if the title’s been butchered, there’s still a practical advantage when searching them out. • VN as an entity has to be cautious when it comes to supporting/endorsing certain not-so-authorized film collecting activities out there, so sorry, there’s no links here... • YES THERE’S MORE TO COME! This will be updated often and I have a huge stack of discs and files awaiting input. Plus future volumes on Anime, Japan 1990—present, Hong Kong/Chinese films, ninja-like hooded heroes, and more. • Yes, we welcome corrections and additions. Email me through the website. • See the Appendixes at the end for more info! Images © Shochiku Co., Ltd, 1965. Text © Keith J.

The subject of the study is established around four films which I claim that should be considered as postcyberpunk: Gattaca (Andrew Niccol, 1997), Code 46 (Michael Winterbottom, 2003), Girl from Monday (Hal Hartley, 2005) and The Island (Michael Bay, 2005). Through comparing these films with their cyberpunk ancestors, it is argued in the thesis that while the essence of cyberpunk is chaos and disorder -an oceanic flow resembling the multiple interacting elements of the matrix-, in the world of postcyberpunk order is re-established and chaos is eliminated by a monolithic system of centralized power which is exercised through panoptic structures of new cyber technologies.

  • Hollywood Film Representations of Japanese Identity
IDENTITY IN THE SHELL: HOLLYWOOD FILM REPRESENTATIONS OF JAPANESE IDENTITY Keisuke Kimura A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS May 2018 Committee: Alberto Gonzalez, Advisor Robert Sloane ii ABSTRACT Alberto Gonzalez, Advisor With the advent of technology and globalization, our societies have become more connected than ever before, especially in the ways that technology has enabled us to gain awareness of different cultures and identities. Although there are many benefits to this exchange, powerful mass media often produce misrepresentations of culture and identity such as stereotypical images that do not fully express reality. This thesis aims to explore American film representations of Japanese identity and culture. Specifically, this thesis focuses on two American films from different time periods as cultural artifacts—Gung Ho (1986) and Ghost in the Shell (2017)—in order to examine how American-produced media view Japanese culture, and how media representation plays a role in international and intercultural communication. By analyzing specific scenes and dialogues, we can describe and interpret the stereotypes and misrepresentations of Japanese identity and culture. Moreover, a brief summary of the history of Japanese immigrants, racial concepts and ideologies, and Hollywood’s general approach to Japanese identity and culture helps us to understand problematic portrayal of the Japanese in the United States. Although these two films are categorized in different genres and time periods, they present similar portrayals and concepts of Japanese identity and culture. One of the key findings of this thesis is the significance of Orientalism ideology.
