Market Headlines US consumer inflation rose 4.2% in April year-on-year, the most since 2008, ahead of the 3.6% rate expected and up from the 2.6% figure in March, further stoking inflation fears. The US Colonial pipeline reopened following the cyberattack, as it warned it would take several days before supplies returned to normal, with twelve states having declared a state of emergency amid consumers panic buying petrol and stations running dry. Japan’s service sector sentiment index fell to 39.1 in April, from 49.0 in March, the first drop in three months. The S&P 500 fell 2.1%, the Nasdaq dropped 2.7%, the Nikkei 225 dipped 2.5%, the Hang Seng lost 1.7%, whilst the Shanghai Composite closed down 1.0%. European markets were lower. Production Perspectives of Heavy Metal Record Producers Dr Niall Thomas University of Winchester Dr Andrew King University of Hull Abstract The study of the recorded artefact from a musicological perspective continues to unfold through contemporary research. Whilst an understanding of the scientific elements of recorded sound is well documented the exploration of the artistic nature of this endeavour from a production viewpoint is still developing. This study presents an understanding of the phenomenological aspects of Heavy Metal music from the perspective of seven renowned producers working within this genre. Through a series of interviews and subsequent in-depth analysis particular sonic qualities are identified as key within the production of this work: impact; energy; precision; and extremity. A framework is then put forward for understanding sonic elements of recorded Heavy Metal Music. Keywords: recording; Heavy Metal; production; producers; phenomenology Introduction The twenty-first century provides a rich source of creative opportunity through digital technology for practicing musicians to record music. The affordances of the digital revolution have subsequently changed the opportunities for those involved in the creation of such works. The democratisation of technology has meant that mobile devices can become pocket sized recording studios (Leyshon, 2009), whilst affordable solutions and emulations of previously prohibitively expensive computing and recording technology are readily available via the Internet.

    ‘WE FEED OFF EACH OTHER’: EMBODIMENT, PHENOMENOLOGY AND LISTENER RECEPTIVITY OF NIRVANA’S IN UTERO Christopher Martin A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS May 2006 Committee: Jeremy Wallach Becca Cragin Angela Nelson ii ABSTRACT Jeremy Wallach, Advisor Despite the fact that listening to recorded music is a predominant form of human interaction with music in general, music scholarship often continues to classify listening as a passive form of reception in comparison to the “activity” of actual music performance. This thesis presents the idea that music listening is actually an embodied and agentive form of reception that varies according to different listeners, their listening strategies, and other surrounding contexts. In order to provide detailed analysis of this assertion, Nirvana’s 1993 album In Utero is the primary recording that this thesis examines, arguing that the album contains specific embodied properties that ultimately allow for embodied forms of listening and responses within the musical experience. Having written the AVID Pro Tools course for The Ontario Institute of Audio Recording Technology in 2004, he went on to teach a special Pro Tools/Production course for several years before building Beach Road Studios. Siegfried has produced/engineered/mixed or mastered records for bands such as Kittie, The Salads, Thine Eyes Bleed, Craig Cardiff, Dayna Manning, Breaching Vista and many more.
