Umpires play a pivotal role in our great game & its incumbent on us as a club to support the growth of Umpire ranks so as to ensure our game remains fair & competitive. First Aid

Please note date change to first aid follow up course

To all parents who have volunteered to do the first aid training thank you for your commitment and time.

We are very fortunate that one of our Mighty Knights parents has volunteered her time to do a follow up night to the first aid course concentrating on making what you have learned much more practical. Dr Susan White (see bio below) will take all those interested including all current trainers who are already qualified through a night where you will be shown how to strap injuries pre and during a game, how to stop bleeding and will do a practical run-through of first aid kits so please bring your team kit along to the night.

We are looking at running this night at the clubroom on Wednesday May 26th from 7.30pm to 9.00pm.

I encourage all of you who are doing the course and any already qualified parents to attend this opportunity. The committee extends its thanks to Susan for her assistance

The regular intake of fluids is essential for sporting performance. Dehydration may impair the body’s ability to regulate heat and also lead to: • An increased body temperature • An elevated heart rate • Increased perceived exertion, causing more fatigue to be! felt • Reduced mental function including reduced skill level and concentration

All of these may be prevented by drinking regularly during exercise and justify fluid intake during exercise.

How much should athletes drink during exercise?

Every athlete is different in how much fluid is required during exercise. It is important to start drinking early during exercise and to drink small amounts regularly rather than large amounts in one go.

A rough volume of recommended intake is 200-300ml every 15-20 minutes, this will vary between athletes and according to exercise intensity.

To find how much fluid you require and how much you sweat, a good indicator is to weigh yourself before and after exercises. One litre of fluid approximately corresponds to 1 kg, therefore if you are 1kg lighter after exercise and consumed 1 litre of fluid you may have lost 2 litres of fluid.

What should athletes drink?

Beverages tend to be more palatable when cool, flavoured and contain sodium or salt. Sports drinks are ideal and also contain carbohydrates allowing refueling for energy during exercise.

Sports drinks stimulate fluid intake more than water, therefore if only drinking water do not rely only on thirst. Usually a combination of water and sports drinks are good for hydration.

THEREFORE to maintain hydration: • Drink regularly during the day and with all meals and snacks • Drink 200-600 ml of fluid before exercise • Begin drinking early into an exercise session and drink small amounts regularly • Sports drinks and water are the best options • Continue to drink regularly after exercise, monitor urine, it should be a pale yellow, if dark and not regular, you need to drink more

It was a chilly start for the match. Before kick off, all players shook hands with the umpires for “Umpires Appreciation Round” – if we have no umpires there is no play.

1st Quarter Sharp got on top for the ball up but the Colts scored a quick goal to kick off the match. Highlights of the quarter included terrific running by Templeton and a magnificent kick from Sharp to Campbell for a goal. Morley’s speed down the wing had the Colts on the run.

2nd Quarter

With the ball down at the Colts goals, Battista put his body on the line for a great save and a big kick by Bowen resulted in Erez scoring. After a super clear out by Morley, Vesely kicked to Battista who marked the ball and then just missed for a point. Welsh got the ball out to Morley in the wing who was well supported by Bennie and Bartlett. At half time, the boys were down but far from out of the match.

3rd Quarter/4th Quarter

Vesely started well and hard tackling led to a free kick , who got the ball to Welsh who kicked to Morley for another goal for the boys. Hard running by Blaher, McKay and Templeton kept the boys in the game.

Although we lost, the boys played out the game strongly with great running by Templeton and Potter, excellent shepherding by Conney ,Hocking and Rose and strong tackling by Dietz. Coach McKay was really proud of the boys bumping, ripping, and hard running. EAST MALVERN JUNIOR FOOTBALL CLUB

1 st The Blues came into this game knowing the Jets Quarter were to pose a serious challenge. Coach Wazza asked each player to keep trying for the whole game, right through to the final siren. That’s not how the Blues played the first quarter. In fact, the Blues were so slow to start that the opposition had three scoring shots, two of which were goals, within the first 5 minutes. It was as though the Blues were still in their warm-up routine half-way through the first quarter. The Jets were first to the footy and using their talented midfield players well. At the end of the quarter Coach Wazza told the boys that from now on they had to run hard and be first to the ball. They had a job to do. Everyone was running hard and protecting the ball carrier. The ball was being moved quickly into the forward line allowing the Blues forwards to dominate the quarter. The Blues were able to close down the opposition running players. Perhaps the best aspect of this quarter for the Blues was that the first three goal kickers were on the receiving end of clean, quick handballs from a teammate. 1 st It has been a difficult season for the U14 Blues Quarter so far this season and Sunday proved the same. Overwhelmed in size and weight each week, this week the Blues met the Bloods of South Melbourne. The Bloods are not the team of last year and have lost some of their best. Unfortunately this was not to help the Blues who were dogged but overrun. Early exchanges were even and there even seemed a risk the scores might be close. But the Bloods are excellent in the ruck (although our ruckman battled hard all day) and they eventually got a superior amount of ball and a few goals.

2 nd The best thing about the Blues is the fact that Quarter they can play good football. They have good skills and an appreciation of the structure of the game. They are selfless, team orientated and smart. When they have the ball, they can move it accurately and with skill. Those are the very reasons why they scored two goals this quarter. Mitch Bevan followed up with a goal that was a product of good teamwork downfield. It need not be mentioned that the bigger Bloods also got a few this quarter. EAST MALVERN JUNIOR FOOTBALL CLUB

This quarter is our quarter! This is the time when the Reds play their best football.
