It argues that women in these texts function as an “absent presence,” by which I mean that they are a convention of the patriarchal gangster landscape and often with little import while at the same time they cultivate resistant strategies from within this backgrounded positioning. Whereas previous scholarly work on gangster texts has identified how women are characterized as stereotypes, this dissertation argues that women characters frequently employ the marginal positions to which they are relegated for empowering effect. This dissertation begins by surveying existing gangster scholarship. There is a preoccupation with male characters in this work, as is the case in most gangster texts themselves.

Last year Memory Bridge launched our new Memory Bridge website (www.memorybridge.org), began to disseminate our Memory Bridge school program across the United States, and debuted our PBS documentary There Is a Bridge . We have received overwhelmingly supportive feedback about There Is a Bridge from around the world. Here is a sample of what folks are saying: "I watched the clip with Mrs. Wilson and I saw Love in action. I cried. • BADA BING! the SOPRANOS and QUIXOTIC REALISM August Braddock1
BADA BING! THE SOPRANOS AND QUIXOTIC REALISM August Braddock1 ABSTRACT Often considered the television series that brought about the second golden age of television, The Sopranos can be viewed as a quixotic narrative. This is especially true when looking at the sixth and final season of the series, with particular focus on the final sequence of the series finale, titled “Made in America.” Not only is the entire series quixotic through its acknowledgement of the impact of real-life East coast Italian- American mafia families and previous cinematic portrayals of mob life, the most noteworthy being The Godfather trilogy and Goodfellas, but also through its Byronic hero, Anthony “Tony” Soprano. Furthermore, the series finale of The Sopranos invites audience participation through the act of leaving the narrative open – no member of the audience knows exactly what happened to their beloved Byronic hero and are left to their own devices to craft an individual conclusion. Through the acts of calling back to the nonfictional and cinematic renditions of mobster life and culture, including a Byronic hero as the series‟ protagonist, and through the act of inviting audience participation to conclude the much beloved series, The Sopranos proves itself to be a modern quixotic mobster crime drama. KEYWORDS: The Sopranos; Quixotic; DeCavelcante; Byronic Hero. BADA BING! THE SOPRANOS E REALISMO QUIXÓTICO RESUMO Considerada muitas vezes a série de televisão responsável pela segunda era dourada da televisão, The Sopranos pode ser lida como uma narrativa quixotesca. Isso é especialmente verdade no que toca à última temporada da série, em especial a sequência final do final da série, intitulada “Made in America”.

“IN THIS HOUSE IT’S 1954: THE REPRESENTATION OF WOMEN IN THE SOPRANOS by SUSAN ALEXANDRA KAHRS (Under the Direction of Peggy J. Kreshel) ABSTRACT The Sopranos, an HBO Original Series, is one of the most popular programs on television. This thesis will examine the representations of women in The Sopranos. Grounded in cultural studies, feminist theory, and feminist media studies, this research was based on a number of assumptions. First among these is the belief that meaning is socially constructed and never fixed, but constantly produced and reproduced. Second, culture can only be understood in relation to issues of power. Third, popular culture is a site of struggle, and fourth, that it is essential to understand how media help shape the values, norms, and beliefs that reinforce gender inequities. Finally, research is a political act. A textual analysis of seasons 1 and 4 uncovered how patriarchy is the dominant ideology on the show. The Sopranos presents a rigid, regressive form of patriarchy where traditional roles, including the mother figure, were fractured and dysfunctional. INDEX WORDS: Patriarchy, Gender roles, Cultural studies, Feminism, Feminist theory, Circuit of Culture. “IN THIS HOUSE IT’S 1954:” THE REPRESENTATION OF WOMEN IN THE SOPRANOS by SUSAN ALEXANDRA KAHRS B.A., Erskine College, 2000 A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate Faculty of The University of Georgia in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree MASTER OF ARTS ATHENS, GEORGIA 2005 © 2005 Susan Alexandra Kahrs All Rights Reserved “IN THIS HOUSE IT’S 1954:” THE REPRESENTATION OF WOMEN IN THE SOPRANOS by SUSAN ALEXANDRA KAHRS Major Professor: Peggy J.

Poole, Ph.D. Dean, Cratis D. Williams School of Graduate Studies Copyright by Vito V. Petruzzelli 2015 All Rights Reserved Abstract “SPEAK ABOUT DESTRUCTION”: REPRESENTING 9/11 IN THE SOPRANOS Vito V. Petruzzelli B.A., Rutgers University M.A., Appalachian State University Chairperson: Craig Fischer Broadly definable as an interdisciplinary study of televisual texts, literature, and history, this thesis analyses David Chase’s The Sopranos (1999-2007) and its engagement of the September 11, 2001 terror attacks. Tracing the show’s narrative and aesthetic roots to its pilot episode, I explore how narrative and aesthetic elements contained in 9/11 television newscasts elicited both an alteration and an exaggeration of the show’s structural and symbolic elements. Furthermore, I illustrate the impact of televisual mediation on the act of viewership, demonstrating the manner in which The Sopranos and 9/11 newscasts employed authoritative narrative perspectives as a means of disseminating vital information to viewers. Methodologically, I employ a narratological approach to show through close textual analysis how elements of location and sequential ordering inform the creation of unique story worlds, and how these story worlds operate symbiotically with viewers in creating meanings beyond the texts.

  • A Second Sopranos Packet Much Like 12 Episodes of the Sopranos, This Packet Was Written by Matt Weiner 37 Tossups with Powers
Not Possible, Even With Computers: A Second Sopranos Packet Much like 12 episodes of The Sopranos, this packet was written by Matt Weiner 37 tossups with powers 1. Immediately after Tony is informed of this action, a semi-conscious man mumbles "the fish is in my pocket." The results of this action are discovered as a man yells "Yo, Einstein, you should have seen me at the hospital." Authorization for this action is given by the sly phrase "I don't know" after contrasting the target of this action with a man who put up storm windows. Along with a related action that causes another character to wear a (*) neck brace in the following episode, this action is the second event intercut with a performance of the Welsh song "Ar Hyd y Nos." The target of this action is smoking a pack of Marlboro Lights with a red lighter and hears the pun "hijack, bye jack" before receiving a "Moe Green special" in his bathtub. For 10 points, identify this murder committed by Mikey Palmice with Junior present, which targeted a friend of Chris. ANSWER: killing Brendan Filone 2. Patsy is initially confused by thinking Mr. Caputo is referring to these people taking over the poultry store. After being corrected for referring to these kinds of "pricks" holding Meadow "hostage" at Columbia, Tony says that Italians are these people "with better food." In the much-beloved Columbus Day episode "Christopher," one-off character Ruben the Cuban is accused of bias against these people. Dr. Reis idiotically reflects on some (*) "tough" examples of these people at the Melfi family's therapy session.

  • In the Sopranos
Volume 2, Issue 2 (Fall 2006) ISSN: 1558-8769 The Sorry Sons of The Godfather: Intertextuality, Orality and Diminished Masculinities in The Sopranos Harry Brod When the enormously popular HBO TV series The Sopranos first premiered in 1999, it shared a core plot element with a film released about the same time, Analyze This, also successful and popular enough to later spawn a sequel, Analyze That.1 They both revolve around the central image of a Mafia boss seeing a psychotherapist. This essay focuses on The Sopranos, and uses references to the contemporaneous Analyze This to bolster its case that a generational shift in images of masculinity is illustrated here. This essay draws exclusively on the first season of The Sopranos in order to isolate a specific moment in the evolution of the cultural zeitgeist. The contents and meanings of these TV and film plots are not self-contained, but are crucially dependent on other mass media images. They rely heavily on a kind of double vision, in which even as we watch the unfolding of the present story both we (i.e. the audience) and the characters themselves have constantly before our and their minds’ eyes images from the earlier series of Godfather films, especially Parts I and II, made in the 1970’s.2 Both The Sopranos and Analyze This move within and depend upon the same frame of reference created by the earlier Godfather films. The core of their humor derives from our and their understandings of the lesser stature of these men vis-à-vis the earlier Godfathers, and the core of their drama centers around whether these sons will be able to emerge from under their fathers’ shadows.

View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by University of Huddersfield Repository WALK LIKE A MAN: HEGEMONIC MASCULINITY AND UN-MADE MEN IN THE SOPRANOS JORDAN SENIOR A thesis submitted to the University of Huddersfield in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Masters by Research in English Literature. May 2017 ABSTRACT This thesis is intended to provide a re-evaluation of The Sopranos in response to recent contributions made to the field of film and television studies regarding the rise of “Quality Television” (Albrecht 2015 p. 5) and the “male-centred serial” (Lotz 2014 p. 21) as a popular medium. The thesis will examine the degree to which the depiction of a crisis in masculinity in The Sopranos can be said to represent a patriarchal or feminist configuration of masculinity (Lotz 2014 p. 35), and to what extent it either reaffirms or repudiates Connell’s (2005) model of hegemonic masculinity. The argument will focus on three main areas; the embodiment of masculinity, the performance of masculinity, and the presentation of violence in The Sopranos. The argument of this essay is that The Sopranos employs gendered processes of pleasure, unpleasure and identification to deconstruct hegemonic masculinity as part of a demythologising project which uses affective learning to achieve its aims (Tan 1996 p.28), and in doing so, the thesis suggests that The Sopranos creates a space for imagining new ways of performing masculinity and new, feminist configurations of male gender identity based on the acceptance and internalisation of “prohibit[ed] forms of emotion, attachment and pleasure” (Connell 2005 p.

  • CTV Re the Sopranos
CANADIAN BROADCAST STANDARDS COUNCIL NATIONAL CONVENTIONAL TELEVISION PANEL CTV re The Sopranos (CBSC Decision 00/01-0130+) Decided March 8, 2001 R. Cohen (Chair), M. Hogarth, E. Holmes, M. Lewis, J. Levy, H. Pawley THE FACTS The television series, The Sopranos, the story of a dysfunctional family whose head, Tony Soprano, is a New Jersey Cosa Nostra (often commonly referred to as the Mafia) boss, aired in the United States on the pay television service, Home Box Office (HBO). Canadian rights for the first season of the series were licensed to CTV, a conventional television broadcaster. The thirteen episodes (each of roughly one hour’s duration) which were a part of that initial season were run nightly at 10 p.m. by CTV between September 17 and October 1 (except for September 23 and 30), 2000. Complaints were received by the CBSC from 138 individuals; however, only ten of these filed Ruling Requests, which are required by the CBSC as evidence of the complainant's desire that the matter be adjudicated upon by a CBSC Panel. In the circumstances, these alone form the basis for this decision. They relate to the episodes of September 17, 18, 19, 21, 22, 24, 27 and 28. The television series fully develops both the domestic family and the mob (syndicate) family lives of their common paterfamilias Tony Soprano, through the thirteen episodes which comprise the first series. The principal characters on the household side are Soprano’s wife Carmela, their children Meadow and Anthony Jr., Tony’s widowed mother, Livia, his sister Janice and his late father’s brother, Corrado (Junior).
