Bradshaw, Advisor The purpose of this dissertation is to analyze the dominant ideologies and hegemonic social constructs the television series Friends communicates in regard to friendship practices, gender roles, racial representations, and social class in order to suggest relationships between the series and social patterns in the broader culture. This dissertation describes the importance of studying television content and its relationship to media culture and social influence. The analysis included a quantitative content analysis of friendship maintenance, and a qualitative textual analysis of alternative families, gender, race, and class representations. The analysis found the characters displayed actions of selectivity, only accepting a small group of friends in their social circle based on friendship, gender, race, and social class distinctions as the six characters formed a culture that no one else was allowed to enter. iv ACKNOWLEDGMENTS This project stems from countless years of watching and appreciating television. When I was in college, a good friend told me about a series that featured six young people who discussed their lives over countless cups of coffee. Even though the series was in its seventh year at the time, I did not start to watch the show until that season. -

Others used the medium as an outlet for fun and lighthearted entertainment. The music was traditionally performed in homes. The Flagler name has long been associated with great music, as Henry and Mary Lily Flagler frequently hosted musical performances in Whitehall’s elaborate Music Room. The Flagler Museum Music Series captures the spirit of traditional chamber music, and welcomes world renowned performers to the finest chamber music venue in South Florida. Here, performers and visitors can experience chamber music as it was intended in a gracious and intimate setting. Due to its intimate nature, chamber music has been described as “the music of friends.” Consequently it is frowned upon to use stages and amplifying devices. The audio devices you will see tonight record the performance for national public radio broadcast and archival purposes. -

Orlando Figes has just written a bestseller about this woman. Using Viardot as an example, he describes the importance of art within the idea of Europe,” says Festival President Helga Rabl-Stadler. 1 SALZBURGER FESTSPIELE PFINGSTEN Künstlerische Leitung: Cecilia Bartoli Pauline Viardot not only made a name for herself as a singer, composer and pianist, but her happy marriage with the French theatre manager, author and art critic Louis Viardot furthered her career and enabled her to act as a great patron of the arts. Thus, she made unique efforts to save the autograph of Mozart’s Don Giovanni for posterity. Don Giovanni was among the manuscripts Constanze Mozart had sold to Johann Anton André in Offenbach in 1799. After his death in 1842, his daughter inherited the autograph and offered it to libraries in Vienna, Berlin and London – without success. In 1855 her cousin, the pianist Ernst Pauer, took out an advertisement in the London-based journal Musical World. Thereupon, Pauline Viardot-García bought the manuscript for 180 pounds. -

Cambridge University Press 978-1-107-09365-2 - Mozart’s Music of Friends: Social Interplay in the Chamber Works Edward Klorman Frontmatter More information Mozart’s Music of Friends In 1829 Goethe famously described the string quartet as “aconver- sation among four intelligent people.” Inspired by this metaphor, Edward Klorman’s study draws on a wide variety of documentary and iconographic sources to explore Mozart’s chamber works as “the music of friends.” Illuminating the meanings and historical foundations of comparisons between chamber music and social interplay, Klorman infuses the analysis of sonata form and phrase rhythm with a performer’s sensibility. He develops a new analytical method called multiple agency that interprets the various players within an ensemble as participants in stylized social intercourse – characters capable of surprising, seducing, outwitting, and even deceiving one another musically. This book is accompanied by online resources that include original recordings performed by the author and other musicians, as well as video analyses that invite the reader to experience the interplay in time, as if from within the ensemble. edward klorman is Assistant Professor of Music Theory and Viola at Queens College and The Graduate Center, City University of New York (CUNY). He also teaches graduate analysis seminars and chamber music performance at The Juilliard School, where he was founding chair of the Music Theory and Analysis department. Committed to intersections between musical scholarship and per- formance, he currently serves as co-chair of the Performance and Analysis Interest Group of the Society for Music Theory. He has performed as guest artist with the Borromeo, Orion, and Ying Quar- tets and the Lysander Trio, and he is featured on two albums of chamber music from Albany Records. -

Ethel Smyth: A Life of Music and Activism As musician Sir Thomas Beecham, friend to Ethel Smyth, walked into the prison yard at Holloway Prison to visit her, he came upon the scene of dozens of suffragettes marching and singing their war-chant, its opening cry: Shout, shout, up with your song! Cry with the wind, for the dawn is breaking; March, march, swing you along, Wide blows our banner, and hope is waking. Ethel Smyth stood in her jail cell, the voices of the women rising up to her. They were singing her song, The March of the Women (words by Cicely Hamilton), composed a year earlier in 1911 as the anthem for the Women's Social and Political Union. Inspired, she stretched her arms out beyond the window bars and, in the Portrait of Ethel Smyth, 1901, words of Sir Beecham, ". beaming approbation from an overlooking upper by John Singer Sargent window, beat time in almost Bacchic frenzy with a toothbrush." The preceding anecdote illustrates the quintessential Ethel Smyth. The feisty, at times radical, activist fought not only for voting rights for women, but also for the equality of women musicians in the male-dominated milieu that was, and is, classical music. (In today's top 20 U.S. major orchestras in 2014, 91% of conductors/music directors and 63% of musicians were male, with men holding 69% of the [higher-paying] principal positions, and 82% of the concertmaster positions while only comprising 41% of all violinists. [1] Of the compositions performed by the top 21 orchestras in the 2014 – 2015 orchestral season, only 1.8% overall were composed by women, with 14.8% of living composers' compositions being by women. -

Mozart was considered a child prodigy. He could read and write music by the age of five and was composing by the age of six. In 1781, Mozart moved to Vienna to become a freelance musician, which was uncommon during this time. Most composers worked for aristocratic patrons during the Classical period, since the rise of amateur musicians who were frequent music-buyers didn’t occur until the late-Classical period into the early-Romantic period. Despite being relatively famous, Mozart struggled with a spending addiction which left his wife and children poor upon his death at thirty-five years old. “Non so più cosa son, cosa faccio” is sung in Le nozze di Figaro by a prepubescent boy, Cherubino, to the maid Susanna discussing his conflict of emotions about women. -
