Keywords: Xiangshan culture, Xiangshanese, modernization, social development, cultural development 1. Introduction The requirement of regional integration of Zhongshan, Zhuhai and Jiangmen often appeared in recent years. For example, the bill for combining Zhongshan, Zhuhai and Jiangmen as Zhujiang City was tabled by Guangdong Zhigong Party committee in January, 2014. The same bill was also tabled by the Macau member of CPPCC(Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference) in March, 2013. The city administration partition hinders the regional development of Xiangshan. Integration of the three cities can improve the cooperation with the destruction of administration partition. The bills are thought as a good idea but cannot be realized easily.

TAIPEI AMERICAN SCHOOL VOLUME Summer 15 2014 TASTAS AlumniAlumni NewsNews A Message from the Superintendent hrough the lens of securing a strong foundation, establishing Toutstanding programs, recruiting and retaining the highest quality personnel, and communicating the value of the TAS experience, alumni watch their institution grow. Colin Powel, the first African American appointed as the U.S. Secretary of State, instructed, “Have a vision. Be demanding.” We have demanded a great deal to bring the vision for our students into focus. With a firm financial foundation in place, we have been able to erect beautiful, green facilities that have enhanced programs and student learning across all three divisions. The Tiger Center provides the educational resources that we have come to expect from a world class fitness center. The construction of the Black Box Theater has already enriched our performing arts program in the upper school. By moving upper school classrooms into the new buildings, we have been able to expand our middle and lower school facilities. The middle school, now with a stronger educational culture and identity, extends vertically over four floors. Like the middle school, the lower school is now characterized by its customized, dedicated learning spaces. A growth in space means a growth in programs. Most impressive is the introduction of a middle school competitive sports program. This comprehensive competitive sports program prepares our students to be capable athletes and gracious competitors at the upper school level and in life. Our programs continue to excel in other areas as well. Public speaking, serves as an example of program excellence that has grown for TAS students.

Development of healthy cities in Taiwan The healthy cities movement began in 1986. It was first promoted by the WHO Regional Office for Europe, and primarily targeted European cities. After almost two decades of work, the results have been very good, and European healthy cities are now exemplars for the world. As a result, WHO regional offices have started to advocate healthy cities for each of their regions. In Taiwan, the Republic of China decided to participate in the healthy cities movement in the beginning of the new Millennium. The Bureau of Health Promotion (BHP), Department of Health called for a pilot proposal in 2003, a cross-disciplinary team of scholars at National Cheng Kung University won the project, and found collaboration from Tainan City, thus, pioneered the healthy city development in Taiwan. BHP has since continued to fund other local authorities to promote healthy cities, including Miaoli County, Hualien County, Kaohsiung City and Taipei County. Since the results have been excellent, some other counties and cities have also allotted budgets to commission related departments for implementation.
