ABSTRACT Juglans jamaicensis subsp insularis, is an endemism of Pinar del Río, protected by Resolution 330/1999 of the Ministry of Agriculture included in the Red List of Cuban Vascular Flora. It is a species that has been little studied in its physiology and anatomy. The present study aims to characterize the stomas of Juglans jamaicensis subsp. insularis. Epidermal impressions were made with nail polish on both sides of the leaflets. These were observed with a novel optical microscope (NLCD-307 B). The length and width of the stomas were measured with a 40x lens, the density per unit area (cm²) and the stomatic index. The average size of the stomas is 16.5 μm wide and 19.9 μm long. -

RESUMEN Las especies de la familia Juglandaceae han evolucionado desde hace 56 millones de años, distribuyéndose por todo el mundo. Juglans neotropica es originaria de América del Sur y se encuentra entre 1800 m y 2800 m de altitud, en bosques secos y húmedos montanos bajos. Es una especie de hojas compuestas alternas, monoica, con polinización cruzada y anemófila, dispersada por animales y el agua, con reproducción anual. Actualmente, está catalogada en peligro de extinción (EN A2cd), ya que 52% de sus poblaciones es sobreexplotada con fines maderables. Los usos de la especie la hacen promisoria; su madera es una de las más valiosas del mundo pues en todas sus partes se han encontrado sustancias activas con potencial para la agroindustria textil, la medicina, como alimento humano; se ha usado como una excelente fuente de leña en zonas rurales. Esta especie es clave en la adaptación ante el cambio climático por sus servicios ambientales en la recuperación ecológica de suelos degradados y por mantener la calidad del aire y el agua bajo sistemas agroforestales que al mismo tiempo son un hábitat y fuente de recursos alimenticios para la fauna silvestre. -

Juglans jamaicensis C. DC. Nogal Juglandaceae Familia del nogal John K. Francis y Salvador Alemañy-Merly Juglans jamaicensis D.DC., conocido como nogal en Clima español y como West Indian walnut en inglés, es un árbol El área de distribución del nogal en Cuba recibe de 1500 raro de los bosques húmedos montanos de Cuba, la islas de a 2000 mm de precipitación anual y tiene una temperatura Española y Puerto Rico. Este árbol de tamaño mediano (fig. anual promedio de 22 a 24 °C, con unas temperaturas 1) produce unas flores pequeñas y verdes, una nuez comes- posiblemente más frescas en algunos de los sitios a mayores tible y una madera muy atractiva similar a la del nogal negro elevaciones (3). El sitio con nogal en Puerto Rico tiene una (J. nigra L.) de la América del Norte. precipitación anual que alcanza alrededor de 2000 mm y una temperatura anual promedio de alrededor de 22 °C (5).
