FEBRUARY IS BLACK HISTORY MONTH! By Marjorie Lear, Multicultural Librarian Join the Library this month as we celebrate Black History Month! Several libraries are offering special programs and displays to highlight African American culture and history, with a focus in 2013 on our Florida communities. This month, library staff members Ronald Glass and Chandra Thornton will lead discussions of the book, “Muck City: Winning and Losing in Football's Forgotten Town,” by Bryan Mealer, at three library branches: Royal Palm Beach, Hagen Ranch Road, and West Boynton. Read the book and join the conver- sation to learn about the Lake Okeechobee area of Palm Beach County and the struggles of its citizens. Also during the month of February, various libraries will show special films in celebration of Black History. Families can learn about that colorful and expressive American music known as jazz through listening games, humorous demonstrations, and storytelling in a highly interactive and fun presentation offered at various branches by Shenole Latimer, jazz saxophonist. In another special offering at many libraries, multicultural Storyteller and Folklorist Donna Washington’s amazing vocal pyrotechnics and dynamic personality will enthrall and delight audiences, making her stories come alive for every- one age four to one hundred and four! Please help us honor our own African Ameri- can community and celebrate our nation’s rich and powerful Black History, which has its roots in a week-long observation initi- ated by Dr. Carter G. Woodson in 1926, was expanded into Black History Month by Presi- dent Ford in 1976, and became Public Law 99-244 in 1986.
