Introduction The Government of India passed the Biological Diversity Act 2002 No. 18 of 2003, on 5th February, 2003 The Act provides for conservation of biological diversity, sustainable use of its components and fair and equitable sharing of the benefits arising out of the use of biological resources, knowledge and for matters connected therewith or incidental thereto. II. Constitution of the Board: As per the Act each State is supposed to establish State Biodiversity Board under section 22 of the Act. Accordingly the Govt. of Karnataka has established the Board Vide G.O.No. FEE 125 ENV 2003 dated: 19-06-2003 and it started functioning from 1 st August 2003. The Board shall be a body corporate by the name aforesaid, having perpetual succession and a common seal, with power to acquire, hold and dispose of property, both movable and immovable. a. A Chairperson who shall be an eminent person having adequate knowledge and experience in the conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity and in matters relating to equitable sharing of benefits, to be appointed by the State Government; b.
