While commercial success is not always consistent from one decade to the next it is clear that the medium has been and will continue to be a cultural staple in the society of the United States. I have selected this type of popular culture for analysis precisely because of the longevity of the medium and the recent commercial success of film and television adaptations of comic book material. In this project I apply a Critical lens to selected comic book materials and apply Critical theories related to race, class, and gender in order to understand how the materials function as vehicles for ideological messages. For the project I selected five Marvel comic book characters and examined materials featuring those characters in the form of comic books, film, and television adaptations. The selected characters are Steve Rogers/Captain America, Luke Cage, Miles Morales/Spider-Man, Jean Grey, and Raven Darkholme/Mystique. Methodologically I interrogated the selected texts through the application of visual and narrative rhetorical criticism. -

July 10 , 2018 CK Reporter of the Week Macy Gardner, Golden Ant-Man and the Wasp bring action nt-Man and the Wasp” takes place 2 years after :Captain America: Civil War” and a “Alittle bit before “Infinity War.” The movie gets to the plot almost immediately, unlike the first movie. “Ant-Man and the Wasp” opens with Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) under house arrest when he suddenly starts to gets visions of the Quantum Realm. This causes him to call Dr. Pym (Michael Douglas) and Hope Van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly), sending them on the adventure of a lifetime. There are new characters such as Ghost, Bill Foster, Sonny Burch, and Jimmy Woo. The movie, which 2 hours and 5 minutes long and rated PG-13, is set in San Francisco. Scott Lang is Ant-Man and a father at the same time. He works hard to entertain his daughter while he runs a company called XCON from his home with his ex- convict friends. The movie is funnier than the first and has both more action and a stronger story line. When Scott learns he has to become Ant-Man again, and Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen) is a character with a Therefore, “Ant-Man and the Wasp” is a movie that I it conflicts with the fact that he has to help his family mysterious past and ties to the Quantum Realm. would recommend to all my friends. and friends and that he is just days away from getting “Ant-Man and the Wasp” is a fast paced movie, but It is worth the money and you can still enjoy it if you off of a house arrest caused by the last time he did not confusing. -

In a world where the superheroic characters from Marvel Comics and DC Comics, the two major comic book publishers in the United States, are taking over mainstream media via film, TV shows, and video-games, it seems more relevant than ever to look at the way in which these comic book fantasies deal with diversity and the representation of minorities. Currently, one of the versions of Spider-man (the one initially operating in the “Ultimate” Marvel Universe, as opposed to the regular “611” Marvel Universe) is of mixed African-American/Latino origin, joining a growing cast of characters 1 that represent aspects of the diverse social identities that fall under the Latina/o category. -

Ogles Dean, College of Arts and Sciences 3 ABSTRACT BEEMER, LAWRENCE W., Ph.D., June 2011, English American Superhero Comics: Fractal Narrative and The New Deal (204 pp.) Director of Dissertation: Robert Miklitsch Coining the term "fractal narrative," this dissertation examines the complex storytelling structure that is particular to contemporary American superhero comics. Whereas other mediums most often require narrative to function as self-contained and linear, individual superhero comics exist within a vast and intricate continuity that is composed of an indeterminate number of intersecting threads. Identical to fractals, the complex geometry of the narrative structure found in superhero comics when taken as a whole is constructed by the perpetual iteration of a single motif that was established at the genre's point of origin in Action Comics #1. The first appearance of Superman institutes all of the features and rhetorical elements that define the genre, but it also encodes it with the specific ideology of The New Deal era. In order to examine this fractal narrative structure, this dissertation traces historical developments over the last seven decades and offers a close reading Marvel Comics' 2006 cross-over event, Civil War.
