The Catholic Church in the Czech Republic
The Catholic Church in the Czech Republic Dear Readers, The publication on the Ro- man Catholic Church which you are holding in your hands may strike you as history that belongs in a museum. How- ever, if you leaf through it and look around our beauti- ful country, you may discover that it belongs to the present as well. Many changes have taken place. The history of the Church in this country is also the history of this nation. And the history of the nation, of the country’s inhabitants, always has been and still is the history of the Church. The Church’s mission is to serve mankind, and we want to fulfil Jesus’s call: “I did not come to be served but to serve.” The beautiful and unique pastoral constitution of Vatican Coun- cil II, the document “Joy and Hope” begins with the words: “The joys and the hopes, the grief and the anxieties of the men of this age, especially those who are poor or in any way afflicted, these are the joys and hopes, the grief and anxieties of the followers of Christ.” This is the task that hundreds of thousands of men and women in this country strive to carry out. According to expert statistical estimates, approximately three million Roman Catholics live in our country along with almost twenty thousand of our Eastern broth- ers and sisters in the Greek Catholic Church, with whom we are in full communion. There are an additional million Christians who belong to a variety of other Churches. Ecumenical cooperation, which was strengthened by decades of persecution and bullying of the Church, is flourishing remarkably in this country. -

Instill Passion for Jesus in Families: Cardinal Filoni by Santosh Digal
Instill Passion for Jesus in Families: Cardinal Filoni By Santosh Digal Colombo: A top Vatican official has urged Catholic bishops of Asia to instill a passion for Jesus in Catholic families. “I encourage you to be close to the Asian Catholic families in order to accompany them in their mission as evangelizers, missionaries and teachers of faith,” Cardinal Fernando Filoni, Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples, said in a message to the Asian bishops’ eleventh plenary assembly. The Vatican official urged the Federation of Asian Bishops’ Conferences (FABC) to empower families by creating appropriate faith programs that will take them to the fore-front of evangelization in the region. “Instill in them a passion for Jesus, a passion for His people and a passion for His mission,” said message that FABC president Cardinal Oswald Gracias read out on December 3, the penultimate day of plenary assembly that began on November 28. More than 140 bishops, FABC officials and funding partners addressed the theme, “The Asian Catholic Family: Domestic Church of the Poor on a Mission of Mercy.” The bishops met at Negombo, a coastal town near the Sri Lankan capital of Colombo. Cardinal Filoni says Catholic families in Asia are in a better position to shape a merciful Church in the region where widespread poverty provides the Church an occasion to give preferential option for the poor while proclaiming the gospel. “Surely, the Asian Catholic family has an advantage to evangelize people from the perspective of the poor and hence create an inculturated Asian Catholic community from the same context,” said the 70-year-old Italian cardinal. -

Charting the Roles of Women in the Catholic Church
FutureChurch Charting the roles of women in the Catholic Church Current breakdown of male/female leadership in Vatican dicasteries Pope Francis has called for “a more incisive presence for women” in the Catholic Church. At the most recent Consistory of cardinals on February 12 and 13, 2015, Fr. Federico Lombardi reported that the cardinals expressed the hope of “an increasingly active role” for women. Although Pope Francis stated the door is closed on the question of ordination for women to the priesthood, he has been emphatic in his call for a stronger presence of women elsewhere. He recently appointed Sr. Mary Melone, the first women to date, to head a Pontifical University; Sr. Luzia Premoli, the first women to be appointed as a member of the Congregation on Evangelizat ion of Peoples, and has stated that women should take up positions of greater leadership within the Vatican. So how many women are in positions of leadership within the Curia? How many assert real influence? While it is difficult to accurately measure the level of influence women exercise, the chart below has been generated to further that discussion by showing the current roles women play now in Vatican congregations, pontifical councils, and other commissions, committees and offices. Secretariats, Congregations, and Pontifical Councils There are two secretariats, nine congregations and twelve pontifical councils. Below is a chart indicating the number of Vatican officials broken out in terms of male/female roles from undersecretary and above.
