    PTHA NEWS Pennsylvania Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association Newsletter We ARE Pennsylvania Racing Volume 5 2014 Records Fall on Pennsylvania Derby Day Bayern took the lead from the start of this year’s $1,000,000 Pennsylvania Derby (G2) and never let up, toying with fan favorite California Chrome down the backstretch before putting away his competition en route to a 5 3/4 length victory. The three-year-old colt set a new track record for 1 1/8 miles at Parx Racing, stopping the clock in 1:34.47. The previous record was set by Selari Spirit in 1974. In addition, handle on the day obliterated the previous all-time record of $5,519,897 that was set just last year on Pennsylvania Derby Day, increasing by 88 percent to an astounding $10,396,671. A crowd of over 16,000 filtered into the grandstand throughout the day so that by the time the Derby horses began entering the walking ring, the rail was jammed with excited spectators. “That was just a powerful performance. (Bayern) broke well and they let us go and (jockey) Martin (Garcia) hustled to get away from California Chrome,” praised winning trainer Bob Baffert. “When Bayern runs like that, nobody’s going to beat him.” Bayern is a son of Offlee Wild, out of the Thunder Gulch mare Alittlebitearly. He was purchased by Kaleem Shah, Inc. as a juvenile for $320,000 at the (cont’d on page 10) Bayern smashed a track record that had stood for forty years in winning the G2 Pennsylvania Derby on September 20th, sending ecstatic owner Kaleem Shah and jockey Martin Garcia to the winner’s circle here at Parx Racing.
