Pan American Championships Canadian Team- Pan American Championships Historical Records The Pan American Squash Championships, which were inaugurated in 1991, serve as a complement to the quadrennial Pan American Games, with the Pan Am Squash Championships being held during the three years of the four-year cycle when the Pan Am Games are not being contested. The Pan Am Squash Championships are open to men and women players in North and South America, with nations selecting three male and three female athletes to represent them at the event. The competition now features three disciplines - singles, doubles, and team format. Canada has competed every year since 1992, except 2012, and while it has hosted the Pan Am Games, it has never hosted the Pan Am Championships, probably for logistical reasons. Over the years Canada has won 10 Individual and Team 1sts, and numerous other high placings. Women’s World Team Championships Canadian Team Historical Records After a Women's World Invitation tournament was staged in Australia in 1976, the Women's International Squash Rackets Federation was formed to run regular world competitions for individuals and teams. The first team event was staged in 1979 in Birmingham for a trophy donated by two of the great players of women's squash, Heather McKay (Australia) and Janet Shardlow (England). Six countries entered the first event, which was won by Great Britain on the only occasion when the Home Countries didn't enter separately, as they subsequently did. Canada has competed in every tournament, with its best result being 4th in 1979. Canada has already hosted the event four times, in Toronto (1981), Vancouver (1992), Edmonton (2006), and Niagara in 2014. World Men’s Team Championships Canadian Team Historical Records In January 1967, the first meeting of the International Squash Rackets Federation (ISRF) was held in London. This followed a gathering, a year previously, of representatives from Australia, Canada, Egypt, Great Britain, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, and USA, following which a constitution was agreed. One aspect of this was the holding of international championships, the first of which was held later in that year. Then, and subsequently, all matches have been held on a three-man team basis. At its 1994 AGM, the World Squash Federation (WSF) passed a motion increasing the maximum number of team entries to 32. Canada, which was transitioning from the North American singles hardball game to the International softball game, did not participate in this event until 1971, but has sent a team to every Championship since (1973 excepted), finishing as high as 2nd in 1997. HISTORY OF SPORT Squash developed from the game of rackets and is said to have begun at Harrow School in England in the mid-19th century. There was a court in most of the boarding houses, the Headmaster’s having two. As no standard pattern existed, some of the courts had many hazards in the form of windows, doors, pipes, etc. Students started a knockabout game which, because it was played in a confined area, required a softer ball than the hard one used for rackets. It was from this ball that could be ‘squashed’ in the hand, that the name derived. The first squash courts in Canada, built in the early 1900’s, were privately owned and probably made of wood. Today the courts are of prefabricated space-age materials with wooden floors and special kinds of plaster on the walls to ensure a smooth, hard, non- sweating surface. The Canadian Squash Racquets Association was formed in 1913. Originally it was almost solely a Montreal and Toronto Association which gradually broadened to become a Province of Quebec and Ontario Association and finally encompassed the western provinces.

WORLD SQUASH UPDATE Issue 82 September / October 2019 FOR ALL WSF REGIONAL & NATIONAL FEDERATIONS cc: WSF Regional Presidents, WSF Commission Members, Stakeholders, PSA members, SPINs, Media, Accredited Products and Companies FROM WSF EXECUTIVE BOARD - WSF REGIONS AND NATIONS UPDATE Last week the WSF Board met in London. In addition to the general and ongoing business of managing the affairs of WSF, there are a few specific areas that it is timely to update upon. One is the appointment of a Chief Executive to follow Andrew Shelley who stepped down at the end of June. The WSF Board initiated a process to handle filling this key position, which led to an initial shortlist of candidates being evolved all of whom were interviewed by the Board as a whole via a conference call. They were then reduced to a final selection who were met and interviewed in person during the meeting. An announcement on the appointment can be expected shortly. Another important element of the London meeting was to receive an initial progress report from James Sandwith, the British brand and marketing consultant, appointed to gather opinion and insight from squash federations around the world, and those within the broader squash community including the PSA, to determine what the sport's strategic future should look like. His plans for the coming weeks and arrangements for his report to be received by delegates for discussion at the WSF AGM & Conference in Cape Town at the beginning of November were covered too. Also central to the there was a review of draft reports, forward plans, motions, accounts and budget Reports for inclusion in the AGM papers that will be circulated this month.
