    CPYU Trend Alert: TV for Tweens by Chris Wagner Television programs produced specifically for the tween demographic are taking off. Cable television is beginning to find a niche among tween viewers by focusing on live-action shows. Evidence of this can be seen in the recent success of Disney’s High School Musical franchise and Hannah Montana , as well as Nickelodeon’s Drake & Josh and The Naked Brothers Band . Tweens, of course, have always watched television. However back in the late 1990’s, a gradual shift began occurring among broadcast networks that largely neglected this age group. Dan Schneider, creator of past and present Nickelodeon hits such as Zoey 101 and The Amanda Show says that networks used to air family shows during primetime hours. As of recent years, these time slots have become edgier and racier and as a result, young children and tweens (with diligent parents) were left to view shows elsewhere. Because cable channels had been marketing shows to tweens for many years already, they were primed and ready to step in and fill the programming void. Tweens are in a stage of their lives where they’re no longer beginning to think of themselves as kids. They have not reached full-fledged adolescence, yet are beginning to test their independence and find their individuality. Gary Marsh, the Disney Channel’s president for entertainment says, “[Tweens] are trapped between the cocoon and comfort of being a child, and the rebellion and independence they want as a teenager. So your goal is trying to satisfy all those needs that kids have.” Though differing opinions exist, cable companies generally categorize the tween demographic as being between 9 and 14 years old.

    Check That Body! The Effects of Sexually Objectifying Music Videos on College Men’s Sexual Beliefs Jennifer Stevens Aubrey, K. Megan Hopper, and Wanjiru G. Mbure The present study examined the effects of sexual objectification of female artists in music videos on male undergraduates’ sexual beliefs. Findings showed that participants who viewed music videos of highly objectified female artists reported more adversarial sexual beliefs, more acceptance of interpersonal violence,and, at a level of marginal significance,more negative attitudes about sexual harassment than participants assigned to low-sexual objectifying music videos by the same female artists. Path models indicated that adversarial sexual beliefs mediated the relationship between condition, and (1) acceptance of interpersonal violence and (2) negative attitudes regarding sexual harassment. Critics maintain that the dominant discourse in music videos reproduces distorted ideologies of women’s sexuality (Arnett, 2002; Oware, 2009). Content analyses consistently observed that music videos place a great deal of emphasis on women’s sexual appeal and reinforce the stereotype of women as sex objects, existing pri- marily for the pleasure of male spectators (Aubrey & Frisby, 2011; Seidman, 1992; Sommers-Flanagan, Sommers-Flanagan, & Davis, 1993; Vincent, 1989; Vincent, Davis, & Boruszkowsi, 1987). As Jhally (2007) argued, music videos are often constructed around the ‘‘pornographic imagination,’’ in which women are seen as sex symbols that simply must have sex and will submit to any fantasy that a man may have. Cultural and industry expectations motivate female artists to participate readily in their own sexual objectification. A recent content analysis showed that female artists were even more likely to objectify themselves than male artists were to objectify female characters in their music videos (Aubrey & Frisby, 2011).

D-Signed for Girls: Disney Channel and Tween Fashion During the 2010 back-to-school retail season, the Walt Disney Company introduced the first in a growing collection of fashion lines for tween girls under the umbrella label D- Signed, available at Target stores throughout the United States. The initial line was based on the costumes of lead character Sonny Munroe of Sonny with a Chance (Marmel et al. 2009–2011), played by Demi Lovato. This was not Disney’s first foray into fashion for pre-teen and teen girl markets.     ENTERTAINING TWEENS: RE/PRESENTING ‘THE TEENAGE GIRL’ IN ‘GIRL VIDEO GAMES’ by Casson Curling Brown B.A., The University of British Columbia, 2005 A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS in The Faculty of Graduate Studies (Sociology) THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA (Vancouver) June 2008 © Casson Curling Brown Abstract Research conducted during the 1990s revealed that video games increasingly represent the medium through which children are first exposed to technology, that early gaming can enhance future technological literacy, and that girls tend to play video games less frequently than boys. These findings preceded efforts by feminist entrepreneurs, followed by established video game producers, to develop ‘girl games.’ Such ‘girl-centred,’ ‘girl-friendly,’ and girl-targeted video games now represent a lucrative branch of the contemporary video game industry. In this project, I utilized a multi-method approach to explore how ‘the ideal teen girl’ is re/constructed in three tween-airned ‘girl games.’ My discourse analysis of the ‘dominant’ messages in the games includes an examination of various available feminine subject positions, and how ‘race,’ class, and (hetero)sexuality are implicated in these positions. My analysis of semi-structured interviews that I conducted with eight tween girls provides insight into their everyday readings of the ‘girl games.’ Unlike earlier research that framed girls as passive recipients of ‘damaging’ messages included in gendered texts, my findings suggest that the girls in my study engaged in active and diverse readings of the interactive texts. The multiple ways in which the girls recognized, identified with, resisted, and/or reworked elements of the feminine subject positions demonstrated their management of such contradictory images of ideal girlhood.
