NPS Form 10-900-a (Rev. 8/2002) OMB No. 1024-0018 (Expires 5-31-2012) United States Department of the Interior National Park Service National Register of Historic Places Continuation Sheet DRAFT 8/31/2012 Historic Resources of the Santa Fe Trail Section number E Page 1 STATEMENT OF HISTORIC CONTEXTS From 1821 until 1880 the Santa Fe Trail figured prominently in the history of the West. The name “Santa Fe Trail” first appeared in print in 1825, being mentioned in the Missouri Intelligencer and Boon’s Lick Advertiser.1 Prior to and after this date, the road was known by a variety of names on maps, in the contemporary press, and in later books and articles. These names included the “Mexican Road,” “Mexican Trail,” “Spanish Trace,” “Santa Fe Trace,” “Santa Fe Road,” “Road to Santa Fe,” “Road to Independence,” “Missouri Wagon Road,” “Road from Santa Fe, N.M to Kansas City, Mo,” and “Road from Santa Fe, N.M. to Independence, Mo.”2 Whatever its name, the route of this trail between the Missouri River and the Rio Grande was a highway for travel and communication between these two areas of North America. It was the first great Euro-American land trade route. From 1825 to 1827, it was the first major road network to be surveyed west of Missouri, and as such, it was a template for future road development. The Santa Fe Trail differed from the Oregon, California, Mormon, and other trails which served as highways for emigrants bound for new homes in the far West. The bulk of traffic along the Santa Fe Trail, especially prior to 1848, consisted of civilian traders – Hispanic and American – with some military traffic and few emigrants. Soon after Mexican Independence in 1821, the Santa Fe Trail evolved into an international trade route linking the United States with Santa Fe in northern Mexico. Enhancing its international aspect, the Santa Fe Trail connected the eastern US – via the Boonslick Road in Missouri – with the pre-existing El Camino Real de Tierra Adentro (the “King’s Road” or “Royal Road to the Interior”), which linked Santa Fe with central Mexico. Much emphasis is placed on the importance of the Euro-American traders to the Santa Fe Trail, but historian Ross Frank notes in his book From Settler to Citizen that “the late colonial [1750-1820] economic development of the province may well have provided a compelling reason for the attraction of New Mexico to American merchants as the major point of overland trade connecting Mexico and the United States after 1821.”3 The importance of Mexican markets and merchants in the economic system that helped create and sustain the trade cannot be overlooked. The Santa Fe Trail was an important link in a large and complex commercial network that connected two continents – Europe and North America – and several countries, including the United States, Mexico, England, and France. Traders in Missouri were tied to merchants, manufacturers, and wholesalers in St. Louis, Pittsburgh, New York City, Baltimore, and other eastern cities, who in turn were connected to merchants in Europe, especially London and Liverpool. Likewise, traders from Santa Fe were linked to Chihuahua, Durango, and other communities to the south along El Camino Real, as well as California to the west. Some of the imports arriving in Santa Fe continued south into central Mexico where many of the goods that were shipped northeast out of Santa Fe originated. In 1848, following US victory in the Mexican-American War, the United States’ Territory of New Mexico was created. The focus of the trail at this time began to shift to domestic trade and communication across the expanding country.

As a result of these changes, public laws were passed and agencies created to rectify or mitigate various environmental problems in the region. Although restoration and remedial programs have improved the overall “health” of Basin ecosystems, most old and new environmental problems persist. Since the photo was taken, all the trees along the creek have been removed. The photographed area is 1/4 mile left-to-right in the foreground, and 1/2 mile from the bottom of the photo to the dark brown field in the middle distance. The curvilinear features running diagonally across the pasture are SFT swales. There are five or six sets of parallel swales, as dif- ferent locations were sought out over the years to cross French Creek. A DAR marker is located where the swales can be seen intersecting the road on the left margin of the photo. This Trail Segment is a National Park Service “Certified Site” and is on both the State and National Registers of Historic Places. This is the loca- tion of the Cottonwood Holes (some are visible just to the right of center of the photo) which were a source of water and provided a noon camping stop on the SFT. This was the first water on the SFT westward from Cot- tonwood Crossing, and the water appeared in depressions or holes both in and alongside the creek.

Our website designer currently is caring for the technical end of her design. The website (www.zebulonpike.org) was created by the Santa Fe Trail Association and given to us 10 years ago. We have altered it somewhat but it focuses basically on Pike’s 2nd Expedition (1806-7) since the Santa Fe Trail Association owned the website for the Pike Bicentennial. The new website has been updated with current information about the Pike National Historic Trail Association. Persons on the Board and State Coordinators, for example, has changed over these 10 years. We have altered our MISSION to include Pike’s a. Early Life, b. 1st (Mississippi River 1805-6) Expedition, and Later Life as well as the 2nd Expedition. A great deal has been added together with Pike Field Maps and modern maps to reflect our Mission. Because smartphones (iPhones and Android) as well as iPads have evolved over the 10 years, our new look website had to be altered to allow for the use of these devices. You will be able to see our website on your smartphone and it will fit on the phone screen. The ability to donate and pay for membership by credit card or PayPal has been also been added. Once the new design and content is checked and approved by us the old website will be taken down and replaced by the new one.

February 2, 2018 __________________________________________ _______________ Southern New Hampshire University Date College of Online and Continuing Education iii Abstract Fort Laramie National Historic Site in southeastern Wyoming recalls the days of the frontier period of the West (1760s to 1890s). From 1849 to 1890, the military fort at Fort Laramie was an important center of diplomacy, trade, and warfare on the Northern Plains. Many of the most important and vivid figures working to expand America passed through Fort Laramie. Trappers, fur traders, missionaries, overland emigrants, homesteaders, cowboys, soldiers, and Plains Indians all had an impact at Fort Laramie. Through various media resources, Fort Laramie’s history is told and one of the most important aspects of this history, the physical historic structures is only briefly touched upon. The historic structures are just one of the many focal points that can be concentrated on during a typical visitor experience. A qualitative analysis into the archival documents through the Fort Laramie Library & Archive, Fort Laramie Interpretation Cache, interviews with National Park Staff at Fort Laramie and interviews with local historians are able to be compiled into a Historic Buildings Guide that fully explore the historic structures at Fort Laramie which are a significant part of its history.

In the 1830s he explored the Rocky Mountains, and in 1846 joined a caravan of traders in St. Louis. He recorded his travels, wending slowly down the Old Santa Fe Trail, all the way to Chihuahua, in Memoir of a Tour to Northern Mexico. This memoir, published the year the Mexican-American war finally ended, provides a snapshot of life before the storm. Wislizenus, with his scientific training, took great interest in his surroundings, and discovered some new species, including the fishhook barrel cactus. [Wislizenus, Adolph] 2: San Miguel 1846 Two decades of traffic on the Santa Fe Trail had brought some degree of prosperity to San Miguel. Susan Magoffin also comments that San Miguel "is both larger and cleaner than any we have passed; it has a church and public square, neither of which are in the others." Quote: (27 June 1846) Passed this morning through San Miguel, or the Rio Pecos, The place seems somewhat larger and wealthier than las Vegas. A church, built of adobes, is the most prominent building in town. San Miguel is the most southern point on the Santa Fe road, and from here our mountain road takes a northwestern direction. About three miles beyond San Miguel we halted at noon, and started again in the afternoon for the mountains.
