AP Government Summer Assignment

Directions: You are to choose two of the following movies to watch and review them for your summer assignment. This assignment is due at AHS on June 23rd 10:00 – 12:00 or 1:00 – 3:00. Work can be returned early, but still must be signed for. Work returned during the summer prior to June 23rd will be returned to the counseling office. You can borrow the movies from the public library, Netflix, or Redbox.

Assignment: You are to write a short paper about EACH movie (separately). In your paper you MUST include the following: title/director, plot summary, conflict and conflict resolution, your favorite scene, and finally, how you feel this film reflects or relates to government (the most important part of the paper!!). Your paper should be approximately one to two pages, no more. It MUST be typed!! Below is a parent permission form; list all the movies you are going to watch on one slip and have your parents sign it (NR means Not Rated)

Movies:

* All the President's Men (1976) - PG - and in a movie about the Watergate scandal

* The Candidate (1972) - PG - Robert Redford in a movie about political corruption and elections

*The China Syndrome (1981) - PG - Jane Fonda and in a movie about a nuclear disaster and political ineptitude

* Dave (1995) - PG - and Sigourney Weaver in a movie about a stand-in US president and corruption in the highest office

* Dr. Strangelove (1964) - NR - Peter Sellers in a weird spoof on the Cold War

* The Front (1976) - PG - in a film about blacklisting, McCarthyism and the Cold War

* Frost Nixon (2008) - A dramatic retelling of the post-Watergate television interviews between British talk- show host David Frost and former president Richard Nixon. It’s an interesting view of the fallen president.

* Inherit the Wind (1960) - PG - Spencer Tracey in a film about the Scopes Monkey Trial in the 1920s

* The Manchurian Candidate (you must watch the 1962 version!!!) - PG13 - Frank Sinatra in a movie about the Cold War and assassination

* Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939) - NR - Jimmy Stewart as a naïve young senator who deals with corruption in DC

* On the Waterfront (1954) - NR - Marlon Brando in a film about unions and corruption (considered one of the greatest movies ever made)

* Swing Vote (2008) – PG13 - Bud Johnson (Kevin Costner), an apathetic, beer-slinging, lovable loser, is coasting through a life that has passed him by when one day his daughter accidentally sets off a chain of events which culminates in the presidential election coming down to one vote... her dad's

* Thirteen Days (2000) - PG13 - Kevin Costner in a movie about the Cuban Missile Crisis (a better film than the 1966 version called Thirteen Days in October)

* Twelve Angry Men (1957) - NR - Henry Fonda in a film about court issues in a murder trial
