ASHOT ALEKSANYAN THE IMPACT OF THE ARMENIAN GENOCIDE ON THE FORMATION OF NATIONAL STATEHOOD AND POLITICAL IDENTITY Key words – Armenian Genocide, pre-genocide, post-genocide, national statehood, Armenian statehood heritage, political identity, civiliarchic elite, civilization, civic culture, Armenian diaspora, Armenian civiliarchy “Today most Armenians do not live in the Republic of Armenia. Indeed, most Armenians have deep ties to the countries where they live. Like a lot of us, many Armenians find themselves balancing their role in their new country with their historical and cultural roots. How far should they assimilate into their new countries? Does Armenian history and culture have something to offer Armenians as they live their lives now? When do historical and cultural memories create self-imposed limits on individuals?”1 Introduction The relevance of this article is determined, on the one hand, the multidimen- sionality of issues related to understanding the role of statehood and the political and legal system in the development of Armenian civilization, civic culture and identity, on the other hand - the negative impact of the long absence of national system of public administration and the devastating impact of the Armenian Genocide of 1915 on the further development of the Armenian statehood and civiliarchy. Armenian Genocide in Ottoman Turkey was the first ever large-scale crime against humanity and human values. Taking advantage of the beginning of World War I, the Turkish authorities have organized mass murder and deportations of Armenians from their historic homeland. Genocide divided the civiliarchy of the Armenian people in three parts: before the genocide (pre-genocide), during the genocide and after the genocide (post-genocide). -

Present-day Armenia is bounded by Georgia to the north, Iran to the south-east, Azerbaijan to the east and Turkey to the west. From 1920 to 1991 Armenia was a Soviet Socialist Republic within the USSR, but historically its land encompassed a much greater area including parts of all present-day bordering countries (see fig.). At its greatest extent it occupied the plateau covering most of what is now central and eastern Turkey (c. 300,000 sq. km) bounded on the north by the Pontic Range and on the south by the Taurus and Kurdistan mountains. During the 11th century another Armenian state was formed to the west of Historic Armenia on the Cilician plain in south-east Asia Minor, bounded by the Taurus Mountains on the west and the Amanus (Nur) Mountains on the east. Its strategic location between East and West made Historic or Greater Armenia an important country to control, and for centuries it was a battlefield in the struggle for power between surrounding empires. Periods of domination and division have alternated with centuries of independence, during which the country was divided into one or more kingdoms. Nina Katchadourian Armenia in Venice: The past and the furious By Gareth Harris May 1, 2015 One of several politically charged biennale displays this year, the country’s pavilion explores its violent history For the Damascus-born artist Hrair Sarkissian, the issue of the Armenian genocide of 1915 always dominated family discussions. “For as long as I can remember, the massacre influenced almost everything we did,” he says. According to the Armenian government, more than 1.5m of its citizens were killed when they were deported by Ottoman forces from eastern Anatolia to the Syrian Desert in 1915 — the centenary was marked on April 24 of this year. Turkey has never accepted the term “genocide”, but it acknowledges that vast numbers of Christian Armenians died in conflict with Ottoman soldiers during the first world war, when Armenia was still part of the Ottoman Empire. Sarkissian’s grandparents were among the deportees and this bleak, and bloody, heritage underpins his practice. Now based in London, he is one of 18 established and emerging artists from the Armenian diaspora featured in the exhibition Armenity at this year’s Venice Biennale. The exhibition’s location is far removed from the frenzied main show venues, in the Mekhitarist monastery on the island of San Lazzaro degli Armeni. There could hardly be a better backdrop for the Armenian narrative. In about 1715, Mekhitar, an Armenian monk, retreated to the island when under attack from the Ottoman army in southern Greece, and built there a complex for 17 monks. The Mekhitarist order thrived in this Venetian idyll, setting up a printing press and a library which today houses more than 4,000 medieval Armenian manuscripts. -

‘Armenityʼ: the Armenian diaspora at the Venice Biennale 2015 2/10/21, 451 PM ‘Armenityʼ: the Armenian diaspora at the Venice Biennale 2015 On the occasion of the 100th commemoration of the Armenian Genocide, the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Armenia has dedicated its pavilion to the artists of the Armenian diaspora. Curated by Adelina Cüberyan von Fürstenberg, the concept of Armenity implies the notion of displacement and territory, justice and reconciliation, ethos and resilience. Regardless of their place of birth, the selected artists carry within their identity the memory of their origins. Through their talent and willpower, these grandchildren of survivors of the Armenian Genocide - the first genocide of the 20th Century - rebuilt a “transnational assembly” from the remnants of a shattered identify. Their ingrained concern for memory, justice and reconciliation skillfully transcends notions of territory, borders and geography. Whether they were born in Beirut, Lyon, Los Angeles, or Cairo and wherever they may reside, these global citizens constantly question and reinvent their ‘armenityʼ. Swiss citizen of Armenian origin, Adelina Cüberyan von Fürstenberg is a renowned international curator. A pioneer in the field, she is known for broadening contemporary art to include a multicultural approach. She is the founder and first Director of the Centre dʼArt Contemporain de Genève and the former Director of MAGASIN - Centre National dʼArt Contemporain in Grenoble. In 1996 she founded ART for The World, an NGO working with contemporary art, independent cinema and human rights. ‘Armenityʼ is being held in a setting of special significance for the Armenian diaspora. It was on the Island of San Lazzaro, located between San Marco and the Lido and facing the Giardini of the Biennale, that in 1717 the Armenian monk Mekhitar established the Mekhitarist Order. -
