BUXTON: Perestroika Pirouettes and Glasnost Glissés: The Kirov and the Bolshoi Ballet, 1977-1991 (Under direction of Jacqueline M. Olich) This paper examines the developments of the Soviet art form of classical ballet during the twilight years of the Soviet Union. Throughout the Soviet era, art and politics were closely intertwined; the country’s ballet institutions served the government abroad, as cultural ambassadors, and at home, as educational representatives. As Gorbachev’s political and economic reforms progressed, state funded institutions sought to adapt to the ever- changing environment. Through an investigation of the activities of the two preeminent ballet theaters in the county, the Bolshoi Ballet in Moscow and the Kirov Ballet in Leningrad, this project explores how two cultural institutions navigated the dynamic landscape of perestroika and challenges the trope of Brezhnevite stagnation. Through the utilization of memoirs, periodicals, and secondary sources, my study illustrates how ballet artists in Moscow and Leningrad responded to the changes occurring outside of the theater during this time and complicates our perception of the otherwise improvisational nature of the Soviet Union’s last years. -

Natalia Osipova and Ivan Vasiliev: a passionate pas de deux - in life and art They are a dazzling dance partnership on stage, and a couple off it. As they prepare for a guest appearance at the Royal Opera House, Jessica Duchen talks to them about the challenges of living and working together By Jessica Duchen Tuesday, 13 th August 2013 Ballet loves a star partnership and none more so than that of Natalia Osipova and Ivan Vasiliev, the Russian duo who are firing up audiences across the globe. The pair, a couple off-stage as well as on, began their careers with the Bolshoi Ballet. Though they left in 2011, they are returning to it for one guest appearance in London this summer, in Flames of Paris. It was here, on the stage of the Royal Opera House, that they shot to joint international stardom in 2007 when the Bolshoi’s then artistic director, Alexei Ratmansky, cast them for the opening night of Don Quixote. When they reprised the roles during the company’s visit in 2010, The Independent’s dance critic commented on their outrageous charm and astounding technique, and added: “By the time we got to the curtain calls, the audience was standing and screaming for them.” Since then, matters have moved on apace. Two years ago, the duo joined the Mikhailovsky Ballet in St Petersburg, which allowed them time for plentiful guest appearances, and they also have contracts at American Ballet Theatre. Now Osipova is becoming a principal with the Royal Ballet in London; Vasiliev, though, has not been signed too. -

Made of Air 12/09/2008 17:00 DANCE NOW Summer 08 Made of Air Ismene Brown sees Johan Kobborg's new La Sylphide at the Bolshoi TEXT AS SENT CONSIDERING her history as the engine-room of the grandest spectacles in 19th- and 20th-century ballet, Russia has a surprising susceptibility to Sylphides. For half a century she was in thrall, like the rest of the ballet world, to the iconic French Sylphide given stage wings by the extraordinary Marie Taglioni. After her sensational impact in her father’s ballet ‘La Sylphide’ it the Paris Opera n 1832, Taglioni spent five years from 1837 to 1842 as star ballerina in St Petersburg whose dancers lapped up this exemplar of a revolutionary approach to ballet, that of the insubstantial, poetic reverie. Expectations of ballet changed in a trice thanks to ‘La Sylphide’, but in its indelible identification with Taglioni lay the ballet’s fragility, and after she retired it dropped away. In Russia in 1892, some 45 years after Taglioni’s retirement, Marius Petipa revised and embellished the legendary ballet, as he had with 'Giselle' in 1884, but his public was now reeling from the bravura and opulence of his 'Sleeping Beauty' and ‘La Sylphide’ disappointed. In 1925 a Russian Sylphide fluttered one more time in the new USSR, as a short-lived star vehicle created for themselves by the Bolshoi's husband-and-wife star couple Vasily Tikhomirov and Ekaterina Geltzer, both edging 50. Then, perhaps gratefully, she vanished from Russian soil for half a century. Bournonville’s rival version, meanwhile, had survived rather better, thanks to its firm preservation by the Royal Danish Ballet of their masterpiece, and not least because it was not overidentified with a single dancer. -

VICTOR HOCHHAUSER PRESENTS THE BOLSHOI BALLET General Director: Anatoly Iksanov Artistic Director: Sergei Filin ROYAL OPERA HOUSE Monday 29 July – Saturday 17 August 2013 50th Anniversary of the Bolshoi Ballet’s visit to Covent Garden The Bolshoi Ballet returns to the Royal Opera House for a fascinating three-week season, marking the 50th Anniversary of their first visit to Covent Garden under the banner of Victor Hochhauser. The season opens with their majestic production of Swan Lake with the sublime Svetlana Zakharova in her signature role of Odette/Odile. Three performances of Petipa/Grigorovich’s La Bayadère follow, with new décor by leading Russian designer Nikolai Sharonov and costumes by Nikolai Sviridchikov. The Bolshoi’s supreme corps de ballet perform to perfection the dream-like vision of bayadères weaving the never-ending patterns on the stage. When the Bolshoi Theatre re-opened its doors after a massive reconstruction lasting six years, it chose to show the world, to great acclaim, their magnificent new production of Yuri Grigorovich’s The Sleeping Beauty. These will be the first performances outside Russia of this huge production, with its sumptuous costumes and spectacular décor by the famed Italian art director, Ezio Frigerio. The Bolshoi then performs the UK premiere of their acclaimed new production of Balanchine’s Jewels, inspired by the brilliance and colour of gemstones. Fauré’s music perfectly complements the romantic elegance of Emeralds, followed by the jazzy, witty Rubies set to Stravinsky’s vibrant score; Diamonds, a glittering evocation of Russian imperialism to Tchaikovsky’s sublime music, ends the ballet in a spectacular tribute to the great Russian ballet tradition. -
