Question for Written Answer Question for written answer E-003848/2019 to the Commission Rule 138 Laura Ferrara (NI), Mario Furore (NI), Dino Giarrusso (NI), Chiara Gemma (NI), Rosa D'Amato (NI), Piernicola Pedicini (NI), Daniela Rondinelli (NI), Ignazio Corrao (NI) Subject: EU-China agreement on the protection of PGI and PDO products; better protection of products from southern Italy The agreement recently signed by the European Commissioner for Agriculture, Phil Hogan, and the Chinese Minister of Commerce, Zhong Shan, provides for reciprocal protection for 100 European Geographical Indications (GIs) in China and an equal number of Chinese GIs in Europe. The EU-China agreement includes 26 Italian PDO and PGI products, which will be protected. These products will be fully covered by ‘protection’ legislation, with a three-year transition period: at the end of the ‘phasing out’ period, which will be of varying duration depending on the PDO product in question, all products that improperly use a given name (counterfeit and ‘Italian sounding’ products) will therefore disappear from the Chinese market. The agreement, which is expected to enter into force by the end of 2020, will now be subject to legal scrutiny, after which Parliament and the European Council will be asked to give their approval. Within four years of its entry into force, the agreement may be extended to cover an additional 175 GIs on each side. In view of the above: – Will the regional origin of the products be taken into consideration during the next negotiations, given that, as regards Italy, only one out of the 26 products included on the list comes from southern Italy? – What measures will the Commission take to improve the future protection of PDO and PGI products from southern Italy on the global market? • Letter to the Commission Regarding Printers Voluntary Agreement
Brussels, Wednesday 26th of May To: Mr Virginijus Sinkevičius, European Commissioner for Environment, Oceans and Fisheries Mr Thierry Breton, European Commissioner for the Internal Market Mr Frans Timmermans, European Commission Executive Vice-President for the European Green Deal We urge the European Commission to keep its promises and propose a regulatory measure addressing the durability and repairability of printers as well as the reusability of cartridges as part of the forthcoming Circular Electronics Initiative. And we ask that the Commission rejects the proposed voluntary agreement drafted by manufacturers. The Commission's flagship Circular Economy Action Plan, adopted in March 2020, has set out to address the entire life cycle of products and tackle their premature obsolescence notably by promoting the right to repair for ICT products. In addition to mobile phones, laptops and tablets, the Plan has rightfully identified printers as a particularly wasteful product category, and has included a commitment to tackle them by means of a dedicated regulatory instrument “unless the sector reaches an ambitious voluntary agreement” by September 2020. Nearly one year later, the discussions on the voluntary agreement have not yielded any tangible results. Voluntary approaches clearly do not work. We need strong regulatory action now. We are extremely concerned by this situation. Not only because of the negative impacts of short-lived printers on the environment and on consumers but also because we are witnessing promises made being walked back on. Printers are one of the most iconic examples of premature obsolescence. Our analysis of printers in use today suggests that over 80% of them have been in use for less than 3 years, and only about 4% have been in use for 5 years or longer.

  • Cross Party MEP Statement in Support of Fossil Gas Exclusion from the Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF)
Cross party MEP statement in support of fossil gas exclusion from the Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF) To be consistent with the Parliament's climate ambition and to deliver a just transition to climate neutrality, fossil fuels should be fully excluded from EU public funds. This exclusion is especially relevant to the Recovery & Resilience Facility (RRF) which will be voted on in the ECON/BUDG committees in November. We, elected MEPs, call on the EU institutions to adopt an EU budget and recovery package excluding all new fossil fuel investments from EU public funding, including the RRF, the Just Transition and the Cohesion Funds. The EU budget and Next Generation EU will together total over €1.8 trillion in public investment. The investment decisions made within these frameworks will determine not only how and whether the EU meets its climate targets in line with limiting global temperature rise to 1.5°C, it will decide whether it recovers sustainably and whether the recovery and transition is just. The European Parliament has demonstrated undeniable ambition with its recent call to raise the emission reduction target from 40% to 60% by 2030 as well as the ENVI committee’s decision to exclude fossil fuels from the €672,5bn heavy EU recovery and resilience facility (RRF). Investing further into European fossil fuel infrastructure is not cost effective and will create stranded assets, condemning regions and EU citizens to yet another, costly and difficult transition within the next 15 years. However, investing in a green recovery will boost the economy and create jobs. Solar and wind are now the cheapest source of new-build electricity generation in many European states.

  • 7 July 2020 Sustainable and Safe Active Mobility in the European
7 July 2020 Sustainable and safe active mobility in the European Parliament Dear President Sassoli, Dear Secretary General Welle, We hope you are keeping well in this challenging period. As the world continues to adapt to the reality of living with Covid-19, we would like to ask you to ensure the European Parliament plays its part when it comes to the issue of mobility in the European Quarter. Many of the thousands of staff working for the institutions normally reach their workplace by taking public transport, but given the required social distancing measures as well as capacity issues, public transport is not a viable option for all under Covid-19. In the short-term, walking and cycling need to be prioritised as modes of transport, something which the World Health Organisation in fact recommends. This prioritisation would be in line with the European Green Deal (which the European Parliament has committed to) and the Commission’s recent statements on the need to promote active mobility within the EU. In this crisis therefore, the European institutions should lead by example in the field of sustainable and safe active mobility. Now is the time to act by working together with the cities that host our institutions. The region of Brussels adopted its regional mobility plan GoodMove earlier this year as a reaction to two of the most pressing issues of our time: climate change and air pollution. The plan won the European Commission’s 8th Award for Sustainable Urban Mobility Planning (SUMP). It structures the region into quarters with low traffic density (so-called mailles or mazen), the European Quarter being one of them.

La lista:Chiara Maria Gemma, Piernicola Pedicini, Laura Ferrara, Isabella Adinolfi, Rosa D’Amato, Michela Rescigno, Gianluca Ranieri, Mario Furore, Mariano Peluso, Enrico Farina, Vito Avallone, Alberto Claudio De Giglio, Danilo Della Valle, Franca Pulpito, Luigi Napolitano, Antimina Di Matteo, Valeria Di Nino, Stefania Gentile.

HM Sheikh Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa Brussels, 17 June 2020 Office of HM the King P.O. Box 555 Rifa's Palace Kingdom of Bahrain Your Majesty, As Members of the European Parliament, we are writing to express our deepest concern over the condition of inmates and detainees held in the Bahraini prison system. We welcomed the news that on 17 March 2020 a total of 1,486 prisoners had been released from prison, yet the calculated move to remain prisoners of conscience incarcerated is wholly disheartening, leaving notable cases behind bars. In addition, the fact that the number of positive Coronavirus cases continues to rise (19,013 cases as of 17 June) concerns us, as this disease could extend to the prison population and thus expose thousands to an avoidable risk of contraction. The release of prominent human right defender, Mr. Nabeel Rajab, is a welcome relief. However, we are writing to you to express our deepest worry regarding the cases of multiple political prisoners who still remain incarcerated; among them, Mr. Hassan Mushaima and Mr. Abdulwahab Husain, the leaders of the opposition in Bahrain. We also are concerned about reports of lack of medical care to Professor, blogger, and human rights defender Dr. Abduljalil Alsingace and political prisoners Shaikh Abdulla Isa Al-Mahroos also known as Shaikh Mirza Almahroos. Some other important political prisoners include Shaikh Abduljalil Almiqdad and Shaikh Ali Salman. Among these prisoners are leading and prominent human rights defender Mr. Naji Fateel, in addition to other imprisoned EU nationals Mr. Abdulhadi Alkhawaja and Shaikh Mohammad Habib Almiqdad.
