The Perception of Love and Death of Emily Dickinson Seen on Her Selected Poems. Yogyakarta: Department of English Letters, Faculty of Letters, Sanata Dharma University Love and death are two important aspects of human life which cannot be separated. Every person has his/her own experience about love and death. Love hurts sometimes and even often. Many people are not ready to give up on love because they feel that all the loves they give were taken for granted. It hurts, just like the death which comes to take over someone whom we love. The lost of the people Emily Dickinson love gave her a new perception of death and immortality Emily Dickinson experienced it many times during her lifetime Thus, there is a connection between love and death. This study analyzes the poems written by Emily Dickinson. Based on the explanation about love and death above there are two problems in this thesis that the writer wants to solve. The first problem is to find out the symbols and the metaphor and their meanings from the selected poems. The second objective is to analyze the significant of the love and death poems to Emily Dickinson’s life. In order to analyze the problem, the writer conducted a library study. The primary data were gathered from the Emily Dickinson’s selected poems; “I cannot live with you,” “You Left Me,” “Wild Nights,” “I felt a Funeral in my Brain,” “I heard a fly buzz when I died,” and “Because I could not stop for Death.”The writer applied the biographical approach. This is due to the fact that this study deals with Emily Dickinson’s works and the relation with the love and death experience during her life. The meanings of love presented on Emily Dickinson’s selected poems mostly are erotic love and love of God. Love to the opposite sex which can be separated by death is erotic love. The other meaning of love presented on the poems is love of God which comes from her faith and her belief toward life after death and eternity. The meanings of death presented on the poems are biological death; which come from the idea of the death of people the speaker love and psychological death; which come from the feeling of the speaker loosing the people she love. Her experience facing many deaths made she was not afraid of death. For her death is not something to be feared, but rather embraced. Emily Dickinson wants to show us that there is more just than just not being alive. xi ABSTRAK Sandi Adi Cahyo, 2009. The Perception of Love and Death of Emily Dickinson Seen on Her Selected Poems.
