‘Connect-ED’ The role of PE & Sport in Social Wellbeing The very best of humanity…. What it means to be human…..

“Being human always points, and is directed, to something or someone, other than oneself - be it a meaning to fulfil or another human being to encounter.”

Several universal changes to their curriculum and wider PE, school sport and physical activity offer as well as more targeted provision. Insight for all change was driven by student voice and the establishment of a sports council. Improvements to the promotion and opportunities for a wide range of healthy active lifestyle choices span the school day.

• Improved bike shed provision to encourage active travel • 50 peer leaders trained to provide additional before school, break time, lunch time and after school physical activity sessions. • Sports Awards will recognise and celebrate physically active lifestyles. • Utilising tutor time for a weekly 10-minute walk/ jog and improved messaging through themed assemblies on mental health, promoting lifelong physical activity.

• Cross curricular links between PE, PSHE, Food technology, Maths and Science have helped reinforce positive messaging to all.

• Mixed ability and gender lessons once a fortnight and the introduction of new activities across all year groups as dictated by the student survey and sports council activities (e.g. Zumba, Fitness boot camps, self-defence classes, cycling and OAA).

• Targeted intervention to support a focus group of inactive individuals via pedometer challenges and additional 6-week interventions during form time to change behaviours both in and outside of school by assisting physical, mental and social wellbeing.

• Introduction of 'surf wise for schools' programme to utilise opportunities in the local area. ConnectED: Policy context

• Do not do anything to please Ofsted • Plan and justify your own bespoke curriculum with clear logic and end points • Ensure understanding of the differences/potential over lap of physical education, sport and physical activity

• This is an OPPORTUNITY rather than a threat • Do not let the tail wag the dog

Previous common inspection framework

• Outcomes for Pupils • Quality of Teaching Learning and Assessment • Effectiveness of Leadership and Management • Personal Development, Behaviour and Welfare

Education Inspection Framework 2019 Slide 79 • Intent • Implementation • Impact

The alignment of a curriculum experience Key words/terms from the Quality of Education (Good) Criteria The role of (brackets) Intent • Ambitious curriculum-designed for all pupils (SEND!!) • Sequenced curriculum • Not narrowed-exemplified by the national curriculum National Curriculum 2014 Key words/terms from the Good Criteria

Implementation • Subject knowledge • Adapt teaching without unnecessarily elaborate individualised approaches • Help pupils to remember long term content (learn the curriculum?) • Use assessment well/reduce burdens on staff • Work given to pupils matches aims and is coherent/sequenced

Key words/terms from the Good Criteria

Impact • Achieve well INCLUDING national tests and examinations • Next stage ready • Work ACROSS the curriculum is of good quality A high-quality curriculum is essential. Grades are only one part of the ‘impact’ of schooling fb 2019 Personal Development (Good)

• The curriculum extends beyond the academic, vocational or technical and provides for pupils’ broader development, including their spiritual, moral, social and cultural development. • The curriculum and the school’s effective wider work support pupils to be confident, resilient and independent, and to develop strength of character. • Pupils know how to eat healthily, maintain an active lifestyle and keep physically and mentally healthy

Ofsted visits • Chance of being visited in PE is potentially increased… • ‘Direct’ the inspector/help them to understand your thinking • More than likely a non-specialist-looking at how the intent is being implemented to create the desired impact • Deep dives…

Ofsted EIF 2019 Questions to ask yourself

• Is your PE curriculum developed in line with the whole school approach? • Is your curriculum logical, sequenced and progressive? • Is it inclusive? • Is it broad and balanced or are you narrowing it for some reason? • Is your curriculum owned and understood by all parties? • Are additional staff used in the right way?

Some suggested actions to take…

• Map the whole curriculum experience • Deploy staff effectively • Raise the profile of PESSPA and work to ensure everybody understands the curriculum • Invest in subject CPD Think piece

• Use the think piece to plan beyond the conference • This is also useful/important (if systemic) for all other school subjects Remember: children are like a breath of fresh air fb 2019 Information Classification: CONTROLLED
