Quartets in the World InVoice Charlotte, Research Triangle Park © Three Oaks Photography Steve Curulla (T), David Cauble (Bs), Curtis Kriner (L), Doug Demick (Br) What do you get when you have a banker (Steve), a CPA (Curtis), a financial advisor (David), and an IT specialist (Doug)? Well... if they like to sing and have a cumulative 40+ years' barbershop harmony experience, you get a quartet named InVoice! The quartet started with 4 members of the Gold Standard Chorus in 2008. The first group broke up in the summer of that year, but the bass and bari found two other singers to form an ad-hoc practice group for Harmony Brigade 2009. They liked the sound so much that they kept the InVoice name and competed in Spring 2009 in Winston-Salem. Later that year the quartet changed tenors. They competed twice more in the new Carolinas district, finishing 9th at Myrtle Beach in 2010. At present InVoice is focusing on local gigs, making it their aim to have one sing-out a month and increase their repertoire. 102 Just 4 Fun Research Triangle Park © Three Oaks Photography Larry Triplett (Br), Mike Meyers (L), Bob Cluett (Bs), Paul Martin (T) Just 4 Fun represents the pure essence of our hobby – 4 guys who would rather sing than listen. Chances are you’ll find them singing a song or a tag with a random foursome at coffee break time at any given chapter meeting. That’s where the idea was launched to enter the 2011 spring prelims, just a few weeks away. Finding four songs that everyone already knew was no problem for this foursome. With no long term goals since they had other quartet commitments, the name Just 4 Fun was an easy choice. Singing for a barbershop audience was the objective; making the cut was a bonus. 103 Let's Sing! Research Triangle Park, Greensboro, Winston-Salem © Three Oaks Photography 2010 District Quartet Champion Steve Tremper (T), Mark Chandler (L), Greg Zinke (Bs), Joe Doub (Br) First formed as a Dixie District quartet in February of 2007 with original tenor Carl Stock (Greensboro), the quartet finished in the top five in their first two years of Dixie District competition, including a third place finish in October 2008. Steve replaced Carl at tenor in November 2008, and together they recommitted themselves to improving in both singing and performance. The hard work paid off in the Spring of 2009, when the quartet qualified to represent Dixie at the International Quartet Contest in Anaheim, California! Spurred on by that amazing experience, in October 2009 they were thrilled beyond belief to claim the top prize in Chattanooga, Tennessee, winning the 2009 Dixie District Quartet Championship in a great contest! In 2010 the quartet qualified once again (and for the last time) to represent Dixie at the International Quartet contest in Philadelphia, PA. In July 2010 the Dixie District officially split with North and South Carolina, forming the new Carolinas District. Because the members of the quartet were all members of the new District, this change made them eligible to compete again for a whole new District Championship, and in October 2010 they were honored and humbled to win the first ever Carolinas District Quartet Championship in Myrtle Beach, SC. What a ride it's been! In March 2011 they were once again honored to win the first ever Carolinas District International Quartet Prelims contest, and traveled to Kansas City, Missouri in July to represent the new District for the first time on the International Quartet Contest stage. They moved up the rankings to finish 33rd out of the top 50 quartets in the world. There's nothing like the thrill of being on the same stage with the Society's greatest performers! 104 The year 2012 was a year of weddings and performances for the quartet, and due to financial and time constraints, the quartet decided to sit out competition for the year. At the end of March, Joe’s son David was married near Winston-Salem, and a few weeks later in April, Greg’s daughter Lindsay was married at Holden Beach. Then again in early August, the quartet celebrated Joe’s daughter Jill’s wedding up in Chicago! So the quartet was busy traveling and singing, and the Dads were quickly going broke paying for it all, but it was such a privilege to be part of these wonderful family celebrations. The quartet continued to perform, however, headlining the Myrtle Beach chapter show and singing at the Winston-Salem annual dinner and installation of officers in January, performing on the Winston- Salem chapter show in May, as well as the Greensboro chapter show in September and headlining the Pinehurst chapter show in November. Another highlight of the year was being invited to the Atlantic Harmony Brigade weekend to serve as judges for the contests and to perform on their show Saturday night. What a blast that weekend was! They also appeared at a 50th wedding anniversary celebration, and performed in several holiday shows in December. All in all, a very full and fun year for Let’s Sing! BIO Information: Steve joined the Barbershop Harmony Society in Vermont in 1981, singing Lead, until IBM moved him to North Carolina in 1987. Since then he served as President of both the Research Triangle Park and Central Carolina (Durham) chapters, competed on the International stage with the General Assembly Chorus, placed in the International top 20 with bass Greg Zinke in The CrackerJacks (1991), and has sung tenor in many other Dixie quartets over the years. Steve is a certified Contest Administrator in the BHS judging program, and serves the Carolinas District as Vice President for Contest and Judging. Mark and his wife, Lisa, both North Carolina natives, live in Old Salem in an historic home that they have lovingly restored. Mark has been a member of the BHS since 1984, and lends his voice and talent to Triad Harmony Express, the chorus of the Winston-Salem chapter, singing lead. Mark is a past Chapter President as well. He sang with the 2001 Dixie District Champion Quartet, Crescendo, and the 2004 International Quarter-Finalist Quartet, Genesis. Joe has been a member of the Society since 1974, singing multiple parts in several quartets along the way, including tenor with the 1983 Dixie District Champion and two-time International Quartet Quarter-Finalist, Blue Ribbon Edition. From 2004-2005 Joe sang with then 16 year-old son David in Sweet Mother of Harmony. Joe is active in the Winston-Salem chapter and he and his wife, Juli, live in Lewisville, NC. Greg is originally from New Jersey and has been singing harmony for over 30 years. Greg and his wife, Kim, live in Greensboro, where Greg has directed the Greensboro Tarheel Chorus since 1999. He has competed at the international level with four different foursomes, placing in the Top 20 semi-finals in 1987 with the Mid-Atlantic District Champions, Northeast Extension, and in 1991 with Steve in The CrackerJacks in the Dixie District. He and Mark sang together in several quartets in recent years, including International Quarter-Finalist Genesis. 105 Links Pinehurst Juan Ross (T), Ron Sickenberger (L), Bob Tweed (Bs), Larry Harter (Br) The Links quartet was formed fourteen years ago from members of the Golf Capital Chorus of Pinehurst, NC. The GCC is is made up of about fifty members who perform regularly in the Sandhills region of NC. The chorus donates about $20,000 annually to local charities. The Links quartet has been since its formation the most active and requested quartet in the region, and contributes all its revenues to the chorus for charitable distribution. The quartet includes: Juan Russ, tenor; Ron Sickenberger, lead; Bob Tweed, bass; and Larry Harter, baritone. Following is a brief background summary of each quartet member. Juan Russ, tenor. Juan is a graduate of UNC Wilmington, NC, where he majored in art. He has been employed as a supervisor with McPeake Hotels for twenty-two years. His musical experience includes being a member of the Moore County Choral Society, soloist and member of his large church choir, tenor section leader of the GCC, and active participant in local musical theater performances. While being the youngest member of the quartet, he is the longest standing member of the chorus and one of the three original members of the quartet. Ron Sickenberger, lead. Ron is a graduate of Kent State University where he majored in English and radio/television broadcasting. An original member of the quartet, he has been a life-long singer in church choirs, stage productions, glee clubs ... and showers. He is a retired human relations executive and management consultant, and currently serves as the chorus lead section leader and vice president for music and performance, Bob Tweed, bass. Bob is a graduate of Bucknell University where he majored in commerce and finance. After a long career in top-management financial positions with GE and Abbott Labs he retired to Pinehurst in 1996. He is currently very active in the community, serving on several key boards of directors. He has been an active barbershopper for forty-six years, and, while singing with the New Tradition Chorus in Illinois, his chorus won nine international awards. He is presently chorus treasurer. Larry Harter, baritone. Larry has a BS in finance and an MBA. He is an original member of the quartet and presently serves as VP of chorus membership and as section leader of the baritone section. His business background was in the aerospace industry and, among many interesting assignments, he assisted in quality preparations for the ascent and descent stages for the trip to the moon.

New Series, Volume 5 Number 5 Poughkeepsie, New York May 2004 Editorial Logo Wanted The Poughkeepsie Chapter has never, to our knowledge, had a logo. Many other chapters do, as do all of the Districts and the Society itself. A logo is a quick way to identify the group. It can be used in a letterhead, a newsletter banner, or a lapel pin, just to mention the obvious possibilities. The chapter should have one. It should include some symbol characteristic of our locality, and the barber pole or initials that tie us to the Society. The emblem on the backs of our red jackets would be an excellent design, except that it could not be reduced to the 1¼O to 1½O maximum dimension that is necessary for a pin or a letterhead, without rendering the lettering completely illegible. One possible emblem would be the Great Poughkeepsie Railroad Bridge. Some people have suggested the Mid-Hudson bridge, but it is not sufficiently different from most other suspension bridges to be definitive. We urge anyone in the chapter with artistic bent to give some thought to this and come up with a proposed design. It would be great to get more than one proposal, and then choose the best. He had performed at schools for many years with his vocal jazz group, Vocal Works. So The Perfect Gentlemen, members of the South Bay Coastliners (Hey Hey South Bay!), auditioned for them at an elementary school in Burbank on Halloween We have now performed our show 74 times at 37 differ - morning. During our performance, the school’s power ent schools from Oxnard to San Clemente and from Ranch went out (lights, sound, everything!). As we stood in the Palos Verdes to Riverside. That’s a lot of miles on all of dark in front of 500 elementary students, as tough an our cars!     ClassicClassic TagsTags for women’s voices Compiled by David Wright Assisted by Jim Bagby, Kevin Keller, and David Krause PREFACE Barbershop tag singing is surely one of the finest traditions arising from vocal harmony. A tag is a short passage consisting of an arrangement’s ending, or coda, which is taught and sung in sessions of informal chord- ringing. The tag allows four singers to quickly blend their voices in a few seconds of blissful harmony without the burden of learning an entire song. This manual is an anthology dedicated to the perpetuation of this practice. We have endeavored to chronicle the tag-singing of today and yesterday by collecting the “classic” tags—those which have become lore by virtue of having been repeated and passed along from harmonizer to harmonizer. Most of these tags originated within the barbershop community, but a few from neighboring vocal styles have been embraced by barbershoppers and are therefore included as well. It should be noted that some of the tags contain chords which are not accepted in a barbershop contest. We have simply recorded the tags the way they are usually sung, with no editorial “corrections”. An effort was made to determine the origin of each tag, but this proved to be an impossible task. The source of many of these little gems seems lost in the murky past, perhaps never to be ascertained. When possible we have identified the tag’s arranger and an approximate date of origin; if the tag was popularized by a particular performer, we have so indicated. The tags appear in no particular order, and no consistent method was applied in labeling them.

Fast forward to 2017, when more than two years of member feedback and strategic planning efforts culminated in the announcement of our new vision, “Everyone in Harmony.” Since adopting the Everyone in Harmony vision, the Society Board and Harmony Hall staff have been working diligently to design and begin implementation of programs aligned to the vision.

    Mid-Atlantic District Association of Quartet Champions October 15, 2019 Dear Quartet Champ, his year’s Mid-Atlantic District Fall Convention was held in Reading, PA on October 4-6 at the Santander Performing Arts Center and marked our 21st years as an association. As usual, our T performance on the Saturday Night Show of Champions was fantastic and a highlight of the weekend. Attending the convention were 48 champs representing 36 foursomes spanning 6 decades … from the Out-of-Towners (1960, Bob Parry) to Midtown (2019). I hope that you enjoy this brief recap. First, to the end with the quartet results: 2020 Mid-Atlantic District Quartet Champions PRATT STREET POWER Ed Schubel (L), Darren Schmidt (Bs), Ben Hawker (Br), and Vince Sandroni (T) Hershey, PA Pratt Street Power sang “Cry Me A River”, “A Thousand Things”, “It’s All Right with Me”, and “Losing My Mind” to earn a score of 3,071 (85.3%) and were 1st in both rounds and in all three categories. The quartet is now the 75th champion since 1945 for a total of 233 men to have earned this high distinction. All four men are new to our close fraternity. The top finish was exciting, and I would have believed it in either order. Kind of a "Westminster won the ballad, VM won the uptune... where's a coin?" situation. Seeing it live, you get to hear resonance over just plain sound on the webcast, and when you're talking 17 points, it makes a difference. Even live, there were points where the live sound system couldn't handle the sound of the VM and it distorted, and times where Westminster guys turned in for choreo and got lost. So we must remember that our seats are rather different from each other, and each system will highlight each strength and weakness differently. Westminster certainly won the crowd, with a great story and great performance, but some people unfortunately chose to boo and ruin a Vol. 6, No. 4, (#64) August 1, 2006 pretty great moment of the announcement. I was looking at the Westminster crowd, and it DID NOT appear to be them. They were INDY INTERNATIONAL excited as heck, and classy in accepting their phenomenal accomplishment. My momentary shame in those booing was quickly Indy 2006 was a splendid International. The weather was sensational, allowing wiped away with the chorus's joy.
