Dear Friends, It is a great pleasure for me to present the 2012-2013 issue of the Annual Donor Report. We are blessed with many generous families and volunteers who provide a wealth of support every year. This year, in particular, was a diffi cult one as many families and friends faced tremendous challenges in the wake of Hurricane Sandy. Together, we held strong and helped the community to rebuild and heal from the events of last October.

This unique time in history, overall, is one of change and challenge. With its ever-present global search engines, emerging economies and enlightened environmental concerns, the world of the future demands new capacities from all of us, no matter what our age. I can’t reinforce enough the importance of beginning a quality education early in life, and continuing that academic journey to prepare for an increasingly complex world.

Our students’ academic achievements and involvement in a wide variety of extracurricular activities, including athletics, the fi ne and performing arts and community service demonstrates their well-balanced education. One of my favorite RCDS phrases is “academics with a hug,” meaning that we challenge the children’s minds while giving them a nurturing environment to learn and grow, emotionally and behaviorally, as well as intellectually. In turn, our students and alumni respond by applying their own knowledge, talent and unique skills to help the world around them.

Plutarch, a noted Greek historian and essayist asserted that “the mind is not a vessel to be fi lled, but a fi re to be kindled,” meaning that there is only so much one can gain from having knowledge thrown at them; rather, children need to be encouraged to actively seek it. Scholarship may seem goal-oriented, but those who reach for true understanding know that it is a road that has no end, and it is our job to support those who are just beginning the journey. Having been a teacher and administrator earlier in my career and Head RCDS Gator for these many years, I know fi rsthand the quality and capability of our talented and dedicated faculty. Simply put, our students excel because of our fi ne teachers and carefully constructed, safe, learning environment.

An RCDS education puts your children at an advantage in pursuing scholarship at the very best secondary schools and colleges, charting a course to help students navigate their future. Once again, this year’s graduates were able to choose from a wonderful selection of high schools. Please turn to page 25 because I know you will be impressed!

Our goal right now is to help the children do their very best and take advantage of every educational opportunity that comes their way. Later on, it will mean places for them at the schools of their choice and, eventually, in the workforce - as leaders, innovators and trusted members of any team. Most of all, RCDS graduates are good, strong people. These are individuals you will want as your neighbors, your friends and your work colleagues. These are men and women who were encouraged, at a very young age, to meet this new world on their own terms with innovation, kindness and responsibility. I truly believe that is the value of the RCDS experience.

Please accept my sincere appreciation for all of your support this year. I am delighted to report that RCDS Annual Giving achieved 75% parent participation for the third year in a row and our entire community collectively contributed to help us surpass our fi scal goal of $500,000! Please turn to page 4 for more information on the fi nancials. Your generosity and support is a testament to your love for RCDS. Thank you, again, for all that you do for The Rumson Country Day School.

Sincerely,

2 The Rumson Country Day School Annual Report Message from The Board President

Dear Friends,

This is an historic time at The Rumson Country Day School. In these ever-changing times, it is comforting to return to the shared values and time-honored traditions that help us to feel safe and grounded; the love and support of family, the encouragement of friends and the warm, welcoming embrace of the RCDS community. I was reminded of this in June as I watched our students participate in one of RCDS’ most beloved traditions, Class Day, a wonderful ceremony that occurs on the last day of school. Directed by new Student Council President Paul Thomas, and in front of their family and friends, members of each class ceremoniously moved up a row as they were formally promoted to the next grade. To me, this ritual symbolizes the 11-year continuum of learning at The Rumson Country Day School. Despite the whirlwind of change around us, our beloved little school on the corner of Bellevue Avenue and Ridge Road remains deeply rooted in tradition and committed to its mission.

Our core values of kindness, honesty, respect and responsibility are the essence of what happens everyday at RCDS; we challenge our students in a safe and nurturing environment, guide them through the sometimes turbulent years of early adolescence and then stand with them as they take that fi nal giant step into the world beyond RCDS. You, too, are a part of this equation. Your encouragement and support of this special environment, exemplifi ed through your fi nancial contributions to our school, is essential to our success and insures that we will continue to pass the torch to the next generation of RCDS students.

This new school year will be met with many changes and the Annual Donor Report is no exception. We have streamlined this publication and changed the delivery date to early fall in order to steward the fi nancial support of our donors in a more timely fashion. At the core of the school’s success is our RCDS community - its faculty, administrators, students and parents. Even as renovations and additions are constructed, we realize that the true strength of our school lies within the classroom. Small classes with expert and individual attention remain the hallmark of the RCDS experience. Essential to that success is the support of our extended community of alumni, past parents, grandparents and friends, whose collective generosity allows us to grow and improve as an institution.

We have an exciting, landmark year ahead as we celebrate Headmaster Chad Small’s achievements, prepare for his retirement in June and select a new leader for the school. The RCDS Head of School Search Committee is hard at work to fi nd Mr. Small’s successor. The RCDS Board of Trustees continues to operate with a deep professional regard for its responsibility to see that the mission of the school is fulfi lled. Together with the administration and faculty, we bring tremendous energy, effort and expertise to every aspect of independent school life. Thank you for helping us to successfully implement our vision for The Rumson Country Day School’s future.

Vitae Disce,

Shawn Reynolds President, RCDS Board of Trustees

12 The Rumson Country Day School Annual Report From the Parent Council President

What a year it has been! I am proud to be a member of the RCDS community that has continually kept “our comrade spirit, in our work and in our play” throughout this sometimes challenging, but always exciting and rewarding year. I am in awe of the dedication, kindness and generosity of our parent community, and it is because of all of you that Parent Council was able to accomplish so much for our school this year. On behalf of each and every RCDS student, I offer my deepest thanks.

Parent Council is an organization made up of every single RCDS parent, and each year the Parent Council Executive Committee oversees over 20 different committees. Behind each event and Committee is a tireless workforce of volunteers, who give everything while expecting nothing in return, all with the common goal of helping our school give our children the best educational experience possible.

Because of the unwavering dedication and generosity of all our parents, Parent Council was able to generate proceeds of approximately $150,000 for our school and our children during the 2012-2013 school year. Parent Council is proud to have made such a large contribution to the enhancement of our children’s educational experience. Specifi cally, Parent Council is proud to help fund the recent security measures taken to improve our children’s safety and the beautifi cation and transformation of the outdoor space outside of Mr. Small’s offi ce into an outdoor gathering space and organic garden. This past year, Parent Council has also continued its tradition of making signifi cant donations to the Financial Aid Fund and to the RCDS Library.

The Parent Council also funded another approximate $40,000 worth of programs, events and initiatives for our children this past school year, including bringing two nationally renowned speakers, Dr. Michael Thompson and Rachel Simmons, to RCDS for the benefi t and betterment of our children, faculty and parents.

It has been an incredible year and again, I cannot thank everyone enough for all of your support. I look forward to another fun, exciting and successful year!

Fondly,

Jennifer Steiner Crowell ’88 Parent Council President

18 The Rumson Country Day School Annual Report Jayne Carmody, RCDS Lower School Head Vitae Disce Society

As an educator, I always knew that Annual Giving was extremely important to a private school’s overall health and success because tuition doesn’t cover everything. I soon realized the vital nature of Annual Giving when my husband, Frank, and I became RCDS parents. We saw, fi rsthand, the particular importance of Annual Giving when our fi ve-year-old daughter, Suzanne, entered Mrs. Kolb’s Beginner’s class. Realizing that she was exposed to so many extras at this wonderful little school, we knew that any gift, large or small, could help RCDS continue to provide all the “extras” to the students. There wasn’t a day that Suzanne didn’t come home excited about school in general, or excited about what she had seen or done. Our family conversations at dinner were largely about a special program, a fun science experiment, the great book she read in class, or a new game in physical education that she had learned! Every day, she spoke about who she had lunch with, and what manners we should all use at our own dinner table! Her enthusiasm helped us to see that we had made the correct choice in enrolling Suzanne at RCDS, and we sought to support the school in the best way possible, through Annual Giving.

Today, Suzanne is still excited about learning, and Frank and I credit RCDS with igniting that fi re. Suzanne now imparts that enthusiasm for learning to her son, Thurston. Frank and I are happy to continue to give to the institution that we credit with starting Suzanne on her path to lifelong learning, and we hope that in some small way our gift helps RCDS to reach other students who will have the same experience.

As an RCDS administrator, I know that Annual Giving helps not just the children, but also supports the excellent teachers, who are the foundation of The Rumson Country Day School. When studying William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer’s Night Dream in class, how exciting it is for the children to then see the play in their own auditorium! Or, as pre-Kindergartners learn about the ocean, then have the opportunity to view sea life at Jenkinson’s Aquarium in Point Pleasant. Beginners enjoy a special classroom visit from a friendly penguin to enhance their instruction of arctic birds. Upper School students go on overnight trips and benefi t from numerous academic programs here at RCDS. Our children experience all of this, and more, because of the generous giving of everyone in the community - parents, alumni, faculty and administration. RCDS is a unique, outstanding institution that is truly like a family, and I am happy to support it for over 25 years!

In 1996, The Rumson Country Day School established the Legacy Society to recognize donors whose bequests, trusts and other planned gifts honor our school.

It seems, quite simply, that even many years after his children had graduated, he still cared deeply for our school. “RCDS was very close to Mr. Robert Arns David Haven Blake ’53 Dad’s heart,” daughter Sarah told us. “I, too, was Jonathan Dewey Blake ’52 totally in favor of establishing the Trust,” said wife Peter Warren Blake ’55 Liz, “because I, as well as Dick, ‘loved that church, Mr. Theodore J. The Rumson Country Day School Annual Report 23 Students in the Class of 2013 furthered a tradition Once again, the beloved RCDS Dining Room begun decades ago at The Rumson Country Day benefi ted from their generosity. Last year, the School. The long-held tradition of gift-giving was students voted to purchase brand new china continued as the graduating eighth grade class plates for the school’s dining room and this year, raised almost $3,000 through their annual Fall the Class of 2013 will add a lazy Susan to each Carnival and elected to give a gift back to the table, making family-style lunches just a little bit school in honor of graduation. easier. Eighth Grade Endowment

Eighth grade parents made a lasting gift to the Class of 2013 Endowment Fund. Collectively, Class of 2013 families contributed nearly $5,000 to the fund, which was added to the general endowment fund of The Rumson Country Day School.

An endowment is a powerful development tool because it is a permanent fund that is invested to produce income. Income earned on endowed gifts can help meet day-to-day needs of the school or address new initiatives as they arise. The general endowment fund provides both the Headmaster and the Board of Trustees with fi nancial fl exibility beyond annual budget allocation.

As with all endowed gifts, the funds raised through this eighth grade effort are invested, generating income to be used by the school on an annual basis and lasting in perpetuity. “The Eighth Grade Endowment fund provides a permanent connection between the graduating class and RCDS. Together, we are helping RCDS students to begin to understand the importance of philanthropy. Our eighth grade families’ support of school excellence in perpetuity through their gifts to the Class of 2013 Endowement fund is greatly appreciated,” said Jessica Goski, Director of Institutional Advancement.
