MACRO AND MICRO GOAL SETTING Turning macro goals into micro goals has helped me in every aspect of my life including extreme and ultra-distance sports, SEAL training and SEAL combat missions. The real tragedy for most people is not that they set their goals too high and do not achieve them, but that they set their goals too low and they do achieve them. Know your own personal limitations and then simply defy them REINHOLD MESSNER MOUNTAINEER AND EXPLORER First solo ascents of Mount Everest without oxygen... First to climb all fourteen peaks over 8,000 meters... Arctic, Antarctica and Gobi Desert crossing... Lost seven toes and three fingers from frostbite… As an athlete, I have competed in some of the world’s most difficult competitions. Although there were always so many athletes so much faster, stronger, smarter and more experienced than I have ever been, my mindset allowed me to compete in the same arena with them and I played to win. DAVE KELLEHER MOTO-CROSS CHAMPION Dave – Professional!!! Don - Novice Dave’s secret to success was that he never gave up his goal of becoming a Champion. He ran 10 miles at a time, 3 times a week. I QUIT! That day taught me my first valuable lesson in goal setting and developing a combat mindset, a lesson that has shaped my life and has lasted a life time... PRO VS. NOVICE • Dave never lost sight of his goal and became a motocross champion. • I remained a novice. When things were hard, I would slow down or quit. I never had the goal of becoming a champion. Being middle of the pack was OK. If I had a bad race, I lost focus and ended up giving much less than my full 100%. • Some people dream of achieving great success and others get up every morning and work hard at it. COMBAT MINDSET Competed in the Boston Marathon, as a non-runner, but with the right mindset. Ended up running 30 marathons in 3 years. NEW GOAL! Work out every day of the year (x 22 years) always with a macro goal in mind 2.4 mile swim 112 mile bike 26.2 mile run HAWAII IRONMAN STUDS …blonde haired “super athlete,” CA model, wearing a tank-top, posing at the airport – very intimidating! Surf was crashing over the sea wall. Scared, intimidated and way out of my comfort zone… Motobecane value $109 Bianchi value – priceless HAWAII IRONMAN • 535 of us on the starting line • Out of the water in 275th, but with a developing and fierce mindset • Rode with my head down - had only one goal – to pass 274 riders “SO THAT’S A BIANCHI – HA” Passed the original IM champion, Gordon Haller… GORDON HALLER: THE INAUGURAL IRONMAN CHAMPION Haller won with a time of 11:44.

Even for this seasoned veteran of long-distance multi-stage events, this year’s edition of the Roving Race with its Route of the Volcanoes was challenging. But the lure to take part could not be resisted. The inaugural Gobi March champion from the first 4 Deserts Series race in 2003 returned for the eighth edition of the Roving Race series, from July 26 to August 1. The American writer, film and television producer has run dozens of marathons and multi-stage events since taking up running in 1989. He placed third in the team category in the Gobi March 2006, has claimed podium finishes in other 4 Deserts Series races, and famously took his passion for running across the entire width of the Sahara Desert, which became the Running the Sahara documentary.

  • Story and Photos by Tim Holmstrom GERARD FUSIL, the MAN WHO
THE HISTORY OF ADVENTURE RACING GERARD FUSIL, THE MAN WHO STARTED THE RAID GAULOISES, The IS UP TO HIS OLD TRICKS Godfather Story and Photos by Tim Holmstrom The first thing I noticed about Gerard Fusil was that he had changed hats. His beige wide- brimmed Outback Tilley chapeau had given way to a snappy bone-white Panama Safari hat. It was stylish but more subdued than the one he wore when I saw him last, five years ago at the Elf Authentic Adventure Race in Brazil, and it suited a man who had reached a stage in life where he felt little need to call added attention to himself. Known as the Godfather of Adventure Racing, Fusil forever put his mark on the world of endurance sports, adventure and team competition when he started the Raid Gauloises in New Zealand in 1989. While team multi-sport racing had existed in some form or another in New Zealand, Australia, Alaska and parts of Europe, Fusil is the one credited with making it a world- wide spectacle. Fusil’s 1992 Raid Gauloises in Oman included a competitor named Mark Burnett, who, a couple years later, started a race called Eco-Challenge. Having left the Raid Gauloises in 1998, Fusil moved on to create the Elf Authentic Adventure, an 11-day race that prided itself on interaction with the local culture (in the Philippines in 1999, and Brazil in 2000). From there, he created Reunion d’Aventure, a five-day stage race in the Indian Ocean, in its second year (see sidebar).
