After not enjoying many chapters and trying to make sense, sometimes Huxley has a moment of philosophical reflection much like in his more famous works. Despite this, it returns to a tangled storyline with its complex linguistics. From the comments on goodreads this seems normal, but as a fan of his work, it really should not take me this long to finish a book. The Eyeless in Gaza and the present are psychologically and physically bound… The snapshots had become almost as dim as memories. This young woman who had stood in a garden at the turn of the century was like a ghost at cock-crow. His mother, Anthony Beavis recognized. A year or two, perhaps only a month or two, before she died. But fashion, as he peered at the brown phantom, fashion is a topiary art. On the whole Eyeless in Gaza in Gaza is about the power of memory… You wish to forget your past errors but your memo The past and the present are psychologically and physically bound… The snapshots had become almost as dim as memories. Jan 18, Jonfaith rated it it was amazing. That was the chief difference between literature and life. In books, the proportion Eyeless in Gaza exceptional to commonplace people is high; in reality, very low. Practically bed ridden, incapacitated and unable to sleep I Eyeless in Gaza this chewy hulk of a novel in 24 hours. Overflowing with ideas, Eyeless asks about Action: what is one to do? Anthony, one of the novels chief characters remains preoccupied with freedom throughout his life. The narrative rotates between 5 or so timelines and flips back to each That was the chief difference between literature and life. Others are debauched Eyeless in Gaza likewise stalwarts in various ideologies. Huxley asserts through the fog of politics and history that a point might be, just keep it simple. Take it easy on your colon. Don't try to fuck people over. Make amends. There are no overt references to gardens, but I accept that such is implied. This was published in and with Spain and the Dark Times on the horizon, this is penned in a certain panic. I wondered whether our own anxiety will crystalize in such a masterful experiment. I wanted to sleep with the book under my pillow Aug 12, Ivana Books Are Magic rated it really liked it. What I can say, having read this novel and all, is that the protagonist Anthony is quite engaging. The narrative is not exactly chronological and the novel isn't plot driven. Eyeless in Gaza is, among other things, a novel of ideas. Now I perceive that I vented it on thoughts, rather than people. Conquering an unknown province of knowledge. Getting the better of a problem. Forcing ideas to associate or come apart. Bullying recalcitrant words to assume a certain pattern. All the fun of being a dictator without any risks and responsibilities. The writing is, most of the time, quite brilliant. Huxley does know how to write good philosophical prose. What impressed me the most was the fact that this book manages to be so many things at once. Eyeless in Gaza is at the same time a novel of ideas and a novel with developed characters and a story. A narrative that is fragmented and hard to follow Eyeless in Gaza still makes sense. Philosophical ideas that suffer from some repetition but don't lose their charm and freshness. The proof of God's goodness floated in those clouds, crept in those grazing sheep, shone from every burning bush of incandescent blossom — and, in himself and Joan, walked hand in hand across the grass and was manifest in their happiness. His love, it seemed to him, in that apocalyptic moment, was more than merely his; it was in some mysterious way Eyeless in Gaza equivalent of this wind and sunshine, these white gleams against the green and blue of spring. Eyeless in Gaza feeling for Joan was somehow implicit in the world, had a divine and universal significance. He loved her infinitely, and for that reason was able to love everything in the world as much as he loved her. Although, Huxley takes it a bit too far at times. Still, I suppose that makes this book quite unique. Huxley is an interesting thinker, and I enjoyed reading this one. I didn't mind the fact that the chapters of the book are not ordered chronologically. It is just that at times, it felt like a bit too much. What did bother me is that the Eyeless in Gaza was sometimes a bit sentimental and cynic. These two emotions that the author masterfully makes fun of and yet doesn't succeed in completely avoiding sometimes felt out of place! Perhaps one cannot entirely avoid these emotions. Eyeless In Gaza | Discography | Discogs Eyeless in Gazanovel Eyeless in Gaza ideas by Aldous Huxleypublished in This semiautobiographical novel criticizes the dearth of spiritual values Eyeless in Gaza contemporary society. In nonchronological fashion the novel covers more than 30 years in the lives of a group of upper-middle- class English friends, especially Anthony Beavis and his longtime married lover, Helen. His intense prep-school friendships continue at Oxford; most important are his relationships with Brian Foxe, who later commits suicide; with Hugh Ledwidge, who marries Helen; and with Mark Staithes, who becomes a Marxist and with whom Beavis goes to Mexico to fight in a revolution. While in Mexico, Beavis adopts a Buddhist-centred philosophy, practices meditation, and becomes a pacifist.

PRESS RELEASE • PRESS RELEASE FIRST LONDON GIG IN NINETEEN YEARS... EYELESS IN GAZA + TYNAN (USA) + FILMS BY BLACKFILMS + MUSIC BY DJ NOIR FRIDAY 29TH JULY, 7.30PM - BUSH HALL, LONDON "One of the great bands that emerged post punk... They were truly unique... one of the great white soul singer voices, by soul I mean Ian Curtis not Jamiroquai. I still love them." ALAN McGEE / MARCH 2005 (from the sleeve notes to the forthcoming 'No Noise' compilation) "Rich, sensual songs with poetic words... there's some unusual and fiery talent on display." NEIL TENNANT / SMASH HITS (reviewing the 'Rust Red September' album, 1983) "Martyn Bates' voice... remarkably intense, a compelling instrument. Simply, it oozes emotion." BOB STANLEY Photo © Elizabeth S. If the post punk years of the late seventies and early eighties continued the rally for individualism, Eyeless In Gaza - the duo of Martyn Bates and Pete Becker - were out there leaning against the banal more than most. With their first London appearance in nineteen years scheduled for July 29 at London's Bush Hall and a new album to follow later in the year, the dual release of the CD, 'No Noise' and DVD, 'Saw You In Reminding Pictures', on July 18 celebrates twenty five years of one of the UK's most idiosyncratic bands. Back in 1980 their self-released debut 7", 'Kodak Ghosts Run Amok', saw EIG claiming their particular space in the new wave scheme of things. Boasting a Wasp synth never sounding so triumphant, the single was as much a primal scream of expression as any punk onslaught.
