A Member of the British Psychoanalytical Society, she now lives in Belfast where she combines working in the NHS with a part-time private psychoana- lytic practice. She has recently completed an introductory chapter for the forthcoming edition of British Psychoanalysis: An Independent Tradition, edited by Gregorio Kohon. Litza Guttieres-Green is a psychiatrist and psychoanalyst and a Training Analyst of the Paris Psychoanalytical Society. She has written on hysteria, psychic pain, and the feminine. Her papers include “Evolution of the Transference in a Case of Homosexuality Declined” (1991), in the International Journal of Psychoanalysis; “Le tombeau vide, douleur de l’oubli” (1991) and “Hystérie éternelle, encore et toujours” (2003), in the Revue Française de Psychanalyse; and “De la Douleur somatique à la douleur psychique. Quels rapports?” (2000), and “Hystérie et soma” (2004), in the Revue Française de Psychosomatique. xi GoP_book.indb 11 22-May-17 9:40:56 AM xii ABOUT THE EDITORS AND CONTRIBUTORS Gregorio Kohon is a Training Analyst of the British Psychoana- lytical Society and works in London in private practice. He edited The British School of Psychoanalysis: The Independent Tradition (1986), and The Dead Mother: The Work of André Green (1999). He also pub- lished No Lost Certainties to Be Recovered (1999), Love and Its Vicis- situdes (co-authored with André Green, 2005), and Reflections on the Aesthetic Experience: Psychoanalysis and the Uncanny (2015). His novel Papagayo Rojo, Pata de Palo [Red Parrot, Wooden Leg] (2007, 2008) was a finalist in the 2001 Fernando Lara Prize Planeta. He has also published, in Spanish, four books of poetry and, in 2015, a collection of short stories, Truco Gallo (co-authored with Mario Flecha and Viqui Rosenberg). His new book, British Psychoanalysis: An Independent Tradition, is to be published in the New Library of Psychoanalysis. Michael Parsons is a Fellow and Training Analyst of the British Psychoanalytical Society and a member of the French Psychoana- lytical Association. His first degree was in philosophy and classical literature & history at Oxford University. He then became a doctor and worked for some years as a hospital psychiatrist. Alongside this, he trained as an analyst at the Institute of Psychoanalysis in London and went on to spend thirty years in full-time psycho- analytic practice. He is well known internationally as a teacher and lecturer and has a particular interest in the relation between psychoanalysis and other cultural areas, such as literature, art, philosophy, and religion. He is co-editor of Before I Was I: Psy- choanalysis and the Imagination. Collected Papers of Enid Balint (1993) and the author of two books: The Dove that Returns, The Dove that Vanishes: Paradox and Creativity in Psychoanalysis (2000) and Living Psychoanalysis: From Theory to Experience (2014). Rosine Jozef Perelberg is a Fellow of the British Psychoanalytical Society, Visiting Fellow in the Psychoanalysis Unit at University College London, and Corresponding Member of the Paris Psy- choanalytical Society. Previously she undertook a PhD in Social Anthropology at the London School of Economics. Her publications include Psycho- analytic Understanding of Violence and Suicide (1997), Female Expe- rience: Four Generations of British Women Psychoanalysts on Work with Women (with Joan Raphael-Leff) (1998, 2008), Freud: A Mod- ern Reader (2006), Time and Memory (2007), Dreaming and Thinking (2000), Time, Space and Phantasy (2008), and Murdered Father, Dead Father: Revisiting the Oedipus Complex (2015). She is currently edit- ing a book with papers by French and British psychoanalysts, entitled Psychic Bisexuality: A British–French Dialogue, which will be published in the New Library of Psychoanalysis. In 2007 she was named one of the ten women of the year by the Brazilian National Council of Women. She works in private practice in London. Jed Sekoff is on the faculties of the San Francisco Center for Psychoanalysis, the Psychoanalytic Institute of Northern Cali- fornia, where he is a supervising and training analyst, and the Wright Institute, Berkeley, California. For a decade he served as the Director of Psychological Medicine at the Department of Family and Community Medicine, University of Miami. He was a board member, as well as a supervising clinician, at Survivors Interna- tional, a San Francisco-based agency dedicated to the treatment of torture survivors. His writings and presentations have touched on the intersection of psychoanalysis with cinema, theatre, art, and social theory, along with a clinical focus on primitive mental states, the body, and modes of therapeutic action. His publications include chapters in Gregorio Kohon, The Dead Mother (1999), Barry Richards, The Crisis of the Self (1989), and Andrea Sabbadini, The Couch and the Silver Screen (2003). He has served as resident com- mentator at two San Francisco theatre companies. Anna Streeruwitz is a psychoanalyst of the British Psycho- analytical Society. She trained as a medical doctor at the Uni- versity of Vienna, Austria. She then trained and worked as a psychiatrist at the Maudsley Hospital and at the Anna Freud Centre, London. She holds an MSc in Theoretical Psychoanalytic Studies from University College London. She works in London, in private practice. GoP_book.indb 13 22-May-17 9:40:56 AM xiv ABOUT THE EDITORS AND CONTRIBUTORS Fernando Urribarri is an Associate Member of the Argentin- ian Psychoanalytic Association, where he has coordinated the André Green seminar since 2001. He is Lecturer at Buenos Aires University and Visiting Professor at Paris VII and Paris X uni- versities and at Columbia University in New York. As a friend and student of André Green, he collaborated with Green in the preparation of several of his books, from Key Ideas in Contempo- rary Psychoanalysis (2001) to his final (posthumous) volume, La Clinique psychanalytique contemporaine (2012). These many years of collaboration are reflected in the book, Dialoguer avec André Green (2013), in which six interviews that took place between 1991 and 2011 are published.

However, as far as her biography is concerned, we are left with scarce mate- rial, and the essence of it is mostly intellectual. It lies mainly in her books and articles where we can try and retrace the development and transformation of her thinking. It also resides in the Journals she created: first L’Inconscient (in collaboration with Jean Clavreul), then Topique which she launched in 1969 as sole chief editor, and in the part she actively played in the history of the French psychoanalytical movement, its controversies and schisms. First in the Societe Francßaise de Psychanalyse (SFP)1 where she trained and graduated and began publishing, then at the Ecole Freudienne de Paris founded in 1964 where she followed Lacan who had just been banned from being a training analyst by the IPA site visit committee when the SFP became an IPA Study Group, out of loyalty and solidarity because she thought the ban was unacceptable rather than out of support for his positions on training.

    The Violence of Interpretation Published in English for the first time, this is a seminal work by an original and creative analytical thinker. Joyce MacDougall and Nathalie Zaltzman have provided an entirely new preface for this edition. Piera Aulagnier’s The Violence of Interpretation bridges the work of Winnicott and Lacan, putting forward a theory of psychosis based on children’s early experiences. The author’s analysis of the relationship between the mother’s communications and the infant’s psychic experience, and of the pre-verbal stage of development of unconscious fantasy starting from the ‘pictogram’, have fundamental implications for the psychoanalytic theory of development. She developed Lacan’s ideas to enable the treatment of severe psychotic states. Containing detailed discussion of clinical material, and written in the author’s precise yet provocative style, The Violence of Interpretation is a welcome addition to the New Library of Psychoanalysis. Piera Aulagnier was a French psychoanalyst in private practice, and a prominent member of the International Psychoanalytic Association. She died in 1991. INTEGRATION WITH EXTERNAL REALITY: 7.1 THE WORLD OF PEOPLE: An individual's internal reality corresponds to a collection of processes, representations, and affects that are essentially (but not only) unconscious, which Sigmund Freud referred to as "psychical reality." It thus contains the representations of the world that the subject has formed, fantasies stemming from unconscious desires, and universal fantasy structures: the primal fantasies. For the analyst, it has an existence and efficiency that are comparable to physical reality. External reality, also called material reality, subsumes the objects of our physical environment, the subject's body, and the subject's inscribed place in society. These two concepts exist in a dialectical and sometimes paradoxical relation throughout Freud's work. They presuppose a theorization of each one taken separately and of their interconnection. In other words, what is at stake is knowing how material reality becomes internalized and how a reality that is initially completely subjective is gradually constituted as external. In "Negation" (1925) Freud asserted, "What is bad, what is alien to the ego and what is external are, to begin with, identical" (p. 237). According to him, external reality always remains unknowable, like Immanuel Kant's Ding an sich (Thing-in- itself); but, like Kant, Freud did not adhere to George Berkeley's absolute idealism, which essentially holds that there exists only mental reality. Para tal fim, percorremos a história da Psicanálise na universidade, na França, desde os estudos de Freud com Charcot até a criação dos dois Departamentos de Psicanálise. Em seguida, realizamos um levantamento das teses produzidas entre 1987 e 2012 nas referidas instituições francesas, com exame de temas, métodos e referenciais teóricos. Como resultado dessa investigação, estimamos ter oferecido uma dimensão compreensiva à relação entre Psicanálise e universidade. Além disso, o exame da produção ao longo de mais de duas décadas pode fornecer um panorama específico do campo psicanalítico universitário francês, com o qual o Brasil sempre manteve relações de intenso intercâmbio e proximidade.     The Death Drive Revisited: A Reexamination of Psychoanalytic Drive Theory and its Implications for Critical Theory Benjamin Yen-Yi Fong Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2013 © 2013 Benjamin Yen-Yi Fong All rights reserved ABSTRACT The Death Drive Revisited: A Reexamination of Psychoanalytic Drive Theory and its Implications for Critical Theory Benjamin Yen-Yi Fong This dissertation is a reexamination of Sigmund Freud’s mature drive theory, also known as his theory of the death drive, and its relevance for critical social theory, and in particular that of the so-called “Frankfurt school.” By tracing the emergence of Freud’s theory in his enigmatic Beyond the Pleasure Principle and then its development in the hands of Hans Loewald and Jacques Lacan, I aim, in the first three chapters, to articulate a drive theory centered around the opposition between what Freud calls the death drive and the drive to mastery, as well as the developmental hazards therein. In the last two chapters, I then attempt to integrate this drive theory into the Frankfurt school’s analysis of the intrusion of mass media and state institutions on the developmental process with the aim of both providing historical weight to the dialectic of death and mastery articulated in the first part of the dissertation and also strengthening the psychological component of critical theory.
