Reginald Yung Grade 11R Personal Project Inquiry Analysis Report Reginald Yung Grade 11R Personal Project Inquiry Analysis Report Topic : Understanding and Respecting Other Countries’ Personal Culture and Story Global Context : Identities and Relationships LINKING TO REAL LIFE SCENARIO In this modern technological society, everyone craves to travel aboard and explore the land beyond. The hypnotic fascination of flying above skies in a plane is indeed mesmerizing. Though so, not everyone can afford the expensive plane tickets. This somewhat abjured dream is not easily comprehended and the only way to overcome this dreaded obstacles is by postcards. When you see the picturesque scenario on the back of the postcard from your ideal city it is liken a dream come true. You would be able to have the sender to describe to you all of the places and also a little about themselves too. It is indeed as priceless as the Mona Lisa if you know how to appreciate such a precious postcard. Without belabouring the point, postcards are a beautiful and simple way to contain our thoughts and memories. Traditionally they have been used to create and preserve a snapshot of a favourite holiday or special moment in our lives. Postcards contain our handwriting, our voices and the story we choose to share long after we are gone. I believe that it is the small things that we do every day, either at home or on a trip, that remind us that we are of value and have something to say. (Mikrut) “Postcards seem to tell a story of another place, a temporary place, one we may not have been to before, where maybe we don’t live, or a place we want to share with another. When I think of writing a postcard I think of the archetypal context and text, “ I’m somewhere and you aren’t and I wish you were here.” Postcards are a small frame to share what we believe is essential to communicate. To write a postcard is to create a boiled down, 50-word or less, story about our journey. It makes us turn in and ask ourselves, “what is the essence of what I want to say here?” and then let it go and sending it with full awareness that others, even beyond our intended audience, may witness our words. –Tracey Cleantis– LMFT, Writer & Author of “The Other Side of Impossible: How to Let Go of the Life You Planned and Find a Happy Ending” and the blog La Belette Rouge LINKING TO GLOBAL CONTEXT The six of the Global Context are: Iden&&es and Relaonships Personal and Orientaon in Space Cultural Expression and Time Scien&fic and Technical Innovaon Fairness and Development Globalisaon and Sustainability For my PERSONAL PROJECT, the major Global Context that I am connecting to is Identities and Relationships. The main guiding questions for this particular Global Context are: - Who am I? - Who are we? - What does it mean to be human? During my PERSONAL PROJECT, I will be exploring identities, beliefs and values, personal health, social health and also human relationships. In a postcard, you will be able to know the sender. His identity, which includes his country, his hobby, his name, his age, his gender and a lot more which makes who he is. Knowing our own identity, being proud of it, no matter your skin colour, religion, race or whatsoever, is the true core of being a human1. The one simple word to name the true core of being a human is 1 Of course, there is no true core of being a human and this is entirely subjective to my opinion. “Respect”. It is how we treat the world, how the world treats us and most importantly, how we treat ourselves. Being MYP students, they expect us to be holistic learner, someone who is well- rounded, can think critically and also link what we learn in the classrooms to be connected to the walls beyond it. Therefore, I would link my PERSONAL PROJECT to as many Global Contexts possible. One of the minor Global Contexts includes Orientation in Time and Space. Just like all of the Global Contexts, this one also has its own guiding question. - What is the meaning of “when” and “where”? For this Global Context, personal histories, homes and journeys, turning points in humankind, discoveries and explorations and migrations of humankind are the main topics to be discussed. No doubt, when writing a postcard, we will introduce our own country to that particular pen-pal. This is where the story is told by individuals and civilizations through personal, local or even global perspectives. For example, during the Second Opium War between the French and the English against the Chinese in 1856 to 1860 can be told in different kinds of opinions. A Chinese man might write a postcard to you reminiscing about how the English and French pillaged, looted and raped the women in the villages and how it has created a scar in the Chinese’s hearts. On the other hand, an English man might talk about their victorious battle against the Chinese and how they would celebrate it for the next 5 years or so. From this point, we can see how both parties view this war and there will always be two parts of the story, instead of the usual one- sided biased story. Last but not least, Personal and Cultural Expression can also be linked to my Personal Project. The main question is: - What is the nature and purpose of creative expression? The ways in which we express ideas, feelings, nature, culture, beliefs and values is a big part of this Global Context. Through postcards, we can discover how the author is feeling. He has his own carte blanche to express himself, he might have been feeling gloomy that day and rant to you about his employer’s attitude. This is the exact beauty of a postcard. We can all be part of his life and experience it through literary words, where we can live this fictional life of his. When we read a story, we inhabit it. The pictures on the back of the postcards are like a roof and four walls. What is to happen next will take place within the four walls of the story and this is possible because the story's voice makes everything its own. Linking Global Context with a Goal, Specifications and the Process GOAL OF PERSONAL SPECIFICATIONS PROCESS PROJECT Identities and The scrap book will I will use my guiding Relationships questions which is written in Contain 20 postcards or more in total my Process Journal and also To understand and the Global Context, respect other Improve the reader’s knowledge about Identities and Relationships countries’ personal other countries and also be open-minded to do my research about culture and story when reading other the sender’s personal Postcards and how it through postcards story. enhances or creates new relationships with other Include extra information about particular people a particular postcard’s country and also some of the interesting facts. Based on my secondary research, I decided to include All text will either be written or typed research about the completely by myself, therefore information and fun facts of enhancing my ATL skills, Organization the country Includes introduction, main content and I will be reflecting on all concluding sections research, development as a learner and all new knowledge on my topic and global context in my Process Journal LINKING TO AOI Human ingenuity “Students explore in multiple ways the processes and products of human creativity, thus learning to appreciate and develop in themselves the human capacity to influence, transform, enjoy and improve the quality of life.” • When doing my product, it will be obvious that I will be creating and let my imaginations roam unbridled and make it as wonderful as possible. Of course, I will also be dealing with how I would want my whole Personal Project to be presentable Health and Social Education “This area deals with physical, social and emotional health and intelligence—key aspects of development leading to complete and healthy lives.” • When writing my postcards, I will be able to pour my heart out and tell them about Malaysia. I can tell the receiver all about Malaysia and also ranting about the history and how it shaped Malaysia today. It may even be possible for me to include the Malaysia Vision 2020 and how I think about the current economy state and all of the whatnots. THE TITLE: Understanding and Respecting Other Countries’ Personal Culture and Story through Postcards. My PERSONAL PROJECT title was actually formulated according to my Global Contexts. My major Context was Identities and Relationships. As explained above, this particular context is about other people’s personal culture expression and how we can know and understand a particular person from the way he writes and the way he carries himself. This then made up the part of “Other Countries’ Personal Culture” The “Understanding and Respecting” part was actually derived from the same Global Context. I linked it all up together in the part about the true core of a human is basically “Self-respect”. Here is where I add in “Respect” and it is indeed an irrefutable fact that we are supposed to understand other people’s cultural identities then only we will be able to respect them. According to my explanation above for Orientation in Time and Space, it is about the story which is told by individuals and civilizations through personal, local or even global perspectives. Everyone has a story to tell. It can be anything, anything from his or her life, anything that the author would want to share with everyone.
